Roblox Voice Chat: How to Turn It On (Age Check Required)

Updated November 6, 2026
Roblox Voice Chat is available to 13+ users who complete an age check (ID Verification or Facial Age Estimation) in supported regions — it’s off by default, and phone verification doesn’t count as a valid age-check method. Roblox’s rule: “Eligible 13+ users must be age checked to use Voice Chat with users of similar age groups in any Roblox experience that supports it. Voice Chat is not enabled by default.” This guide covers how to turn Voice Chat on, what age-check methods work, platform-specific toggle locations, and what happens if you violate Voice Chat rules. Who can use Voice Chat
Roblox’s three-rule gate:
- Age 13+. Younger users cannot access Voice Chat.
- Age check completed. Must verify ID or complete Facial Age Estimation.
- Supported region. Voice Chat isn’t available in all regions. Roblox doesn’t publish a region list but notes availability varies.
Even if all three conditions are met, Voice Chat is still off by default — you have to actively turn it on.
Age-check methods that work
Roblox accepts two age-verification methods:
- ID Verification. Submit a government-issued ID document for Roblox to verify.
- Facial Age Estimation. Roblox’s camera-based age-estimation flow.
Roblox’s explicit exclusion: “Phone verification is not a valid method to gain access to Voice Chat following these updates.”
Both methods are opt-in; neither is required to use Roblox generally, only to unlock Voice Chat (and some other age-gated features).
Turning Voice Chat on — step-by-step
After completing an age check:
- Open any Roblox experience that supports Voice Chat.
- Look for the headphone icon in the experience — tap or click it.
- Voice Chat activates for that session.
- Alternative path: experience settings → Voice Chat toggle.
If you don’t see the headphone icon or Voice Chat toggle in a supported experience, Voice Chat may not be available in your region.
Voice Chat on PlayStation
Roblox’s PlayStation-specific note: “If you are on Playstation, you can connect to Voice within in-experience settings.”
The flow is slightly different on PS4/PS5:
- Enter a Voice-Chat-supported experience.
- Open in-experience settings (top-right menu).
- Toggle Voice Chat on.
- Connect headset or use PS controller mic.
How to mute and unmute
Roblox provides two mute levels:
- Device mute. Mute your microphone at the OS level (iOS/Android: swipe down for Control Center → mute mic; Windows: taskbar sound settings).
- In-experience mute. Mute Voice Chat within the Roblox experience via the headphone icon or in-experience menu.
Both are useful: device mute cuts you off completely; in-experience mute silences only that specific Roblox session.
Connection status control
Roblox’s rule: “You can manage connection status by clicking on the headphone icon to connect to Voice.”
Three connection states:
- Connected (speaking enabled). Others hear you; you hear them.
- Connected (muted). You hear others; they don’t hear you.
- Disconnected. Voice Chat fully off for this session.
Switch between states via the headphone icon or in-experience Voice Chat toggle.
Community standards apply
Roblox’s reminder: “13+ users are encouraged to enjoy this exciting way to communicate on Roblox, but they must also continue to adhere to the Terms of Use and Community Standards as they would within any Roblox experience. Users that violate these rules may be suspended or removed from Voice Chat and have further moderation actions taken against their Roblox account.”
What this means:
- Voice Chat is moderated the same way text chat is.
- Harassment, slurs, or abuse via voice can trigger suspension.
- Violations may remove Voice Chat access without affecting the rest of your account.
- Repeat or severe violations may escalate to platform-wide moderation actions.
Voice Chat Recording FAQ
Roblox has separate documentation on voice recording. Key points:
- Roblox captures voice data for safety moderation.
- Recordings are used to review violations reported by other users.
- Specific retention and processing details are in Roblox’s privacy policy.
For full Voice Chat Recording details, see Roblox’s “Voice Chat Recording FAQs” help article.
Regional availability
Roblox notes: “Voice Chat features may not be available in certain regions. Verification methods, such as ID Verification and Facial Age Estimation, may also not be available to all accounts.”
If you cannot:
- Verify your age via ID or Facial Age Estimation → your region or account type may not support it.
- See the headphone icon in a supported experience → Voice Chat not available in your region.
Regional availability can change over time as Roblox expands support. Check periodically if your region wasn’t supported at account creation.
