Winterblessed Hwei

First game I played with Winterblessed Hwei was around 1 AM on a random Wednesday, maybe two weeks after it dropped. Hwei had just come out and I was still figuring out his kit, cycling through QQ, QW, QE trying not to int my lane. But the skin caught me off guard. Not gonna lie, the winter aesthetic on a painter champion just works in a way I wasnt expecting. Clean. Really clean.

What Winterblessed Hwei actually brings to the table

So this is an Epic tier skin at 1350 RP, which means new VFX and a new recall animation. Voice lines stay base, no new VO. For a champion whose entire identity is painting spells mid-combat, the VFX upgrade matters more here than on most champs.

The abilities get this icy crystalline treatment across all three spell books. Your QQ poke sends out frosted shards instead of the default paint, and the QW zone has this soft snowfall particle effect that reads well against the Rift without being distracting. QE felt a little subtle to me honestly, but the W spells got the biggest glow-up. The WW shield especially has this gorgeous ice-lattice pattern that wraps around allies.

Kinda feels like Riot put extra care into the EE and EW too. The root from EE leaves behind frost crystals on the ground, which is a nice touch for such a brief spell. Recall animation has Hwei painting a winter landscape that comes to life around him. Solid work. (Random aside: I screenshot the recall and used it as my Discord banner for like a month.)

The splash itself is beautiful. Horace ‘Hozure’ Hsu nailed the splash, capturing Hwei in this serene frozen garden setting. The contrast between the warm golden accents on his outfit and the cold blue environment hits different when you see it full-size in the loading screen.

Winterblessed line and the December 2023 drop

Released December 6, 2023. This was part of the Winterblessed skinline’s second wave, and Hwei got it basically on launch. Been maining Hwei with this skin since season 14 started and the Winterblessed theme fits his vibe better than you’d think. The whole line leans into this sacred frost deity aesthetic rather than generic Christmas stuff, which I appreciate.

9 chromas total. Obsidian is my go-to because the dark palette makes the ice VFX pop harder in teamfights. Sapphire deepens the blue to an almost royal level, really commits to the frost mage fantasy. Wreathguard is the holiday-specific one with red and green, and I think it works better than it should. Could be wrong here but the Rose Quartz chroma might actually be the sleeper pick for people who want something softer without losing the winter feel.

The rest are fine but nothing I’d specifically chase. Pearl exists. Ruby is Ruby. You know the deal.

Should you pick up Winterblessed Hwei?

Straight talk: this was Hwei’s first skin alongside his release, and for a while it was the only alternative to base. Even now with Spirit Blossom Hwei out there, I keep coming back to Winterblessed. There’s something about queueing up for a ranked game at like 2 AM, locking in Hwei mid, and having those frost particles fill the lane while you poke from range. Been playing maybe 150 games with this one and the VFX have never felt cluttered or hard to read, which matters on a champ with ten abilities.

For Diamond players specifically, the spell clarity is important. I’ve had games where my Winterblessed Hwei EE root caught their Katarina right before she could ult in a dragon pit fight, and the frost visual actually helped my team react faster to the CC. Might be overthinking it but I swear the ice particles make your CC more visible to allies than the base skin.

1350 RP feels fair for what you get. The VFX across all three spell books, the clean recall, Hozure’s splash art. For Hwei mains this is an easy pickup. For people still learning the champ, honestly the visual distinction between spell books in this skin helped me learn his kit faster than base did. Worth it.
