First time I saw Guardian of the Sands Xerath in a loading screen I thought someone modded their client. The gold and turquoise energy replacing that usual blue arcane look caught me completely off guard. Been running this skin on and off since season 5 and I keep coming back to it over the newer options. Not sure if it’s just me but something about the ancient Egyptian aesthetic on an energy being just works better than it should.

What the skin actually changes on Xerath

So the big draw here is the VFX overhaul. Every single ability gets the sand and gold treatment. Q charges up with swirling sand particles instead of the standard arcane energy, and the release animation has this grainy golden burst that reads really clean in lane. Honestly the Q alone sold me on keeping this in rotation.

W drops a sand circle on the ground. The center detonation has a nice cracked-earth effect that I think looks sharper than base Xerath’s generic purple blast. E is a sand bolt, trails gold dust behind it. Simple change – huge impact on how the stun looks when it connects. Three things stood out when I first tried it: ult VFX, recall, and the idle animation.

Speaking of the ult, R calls down these pillars of sand instead of arcane strikes. Each shot has weight to it visually. Been spamming this in Diamond games and the ult shots are actually easier for me to track compared to base. Could be wrong here but I swear the sand particles give better visual feedback on where each shot lands. Last Thursday around 1 AM I hit a four-shot ult on their backline in a teamfight near dragon pit and the sand explosions looked cinematic.

The recall animation is new too. Xerath channels sand energy and reconstructs some kind of ancient monument around himself. Its cool for an Epic tier skin, gives that pharaoh-summoning vibe. No new voice lines though, voice stays default. Michael McConnohie’s base VO still fits the theme well enough that it doesnt feel like a miss.

No chromas on this one. Zero. Which is a shame because I’d kill for an obsidian or ruby variant. The base gold and turquoise palette carries the skin fine but more options would have been nice for a skin thats been out this long.

The Guardian of the Sands line and release context

Guardian of the Sands Xerath dropped April 26, 2015. Deep into season 5. Sixmorevodka Studio handled the splash, they captured the ancient desert guardian feel perfectly. The splash has Xerath floating above sand dunes with gold energy radiating outward. Been my desktop background for longer than I care to admit (random aside: I rotate between this and the Scorched Earth splash depending on my mood).

The Guardian of the Sands skinline is one of Riot’s more underrated thematic sets. Kha’Zix, Skarner, Rengar, and Janna all got skins in the line. Xerath fits the Egyptian mythology angle naturally since he’s already an ascended being from Shurima. Kinda feels like Riot designed the whole skinline around champions who’d look good wrapped in sand and gold, and Xerath was the obvious centerpiece.

Guardian of the Sands as a theme peaked with this Xerath skin in my opinion. The other champions in the set look good but an energy mage made of pure arcane power converting to sand energy? That’s the cleanest translation in the whole line. Played maybe 150 games with this across multiple seasons and it never gets old.

Is Guardian of the Sands Xerath worth 1350 RP?

Real verdict: for Xerath mains this is a must-own. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. New VFX on every ability, solid recall animation, and a cohesive theme that actually enhances gameplay clarity. The sand particles on Q and R genuinely help me track my poke in lane and during teamfights.

If you’re deciding between this and Dark Star Xerath or Arcana Xerath, it comes down to preference. Dark Star leans cosmic horror, Arcana goes tarot mystical, Guardian of the Sands nails the ancient desert power fantasy. For a Xerath one-trick climbing through ranked, I’d say own all three and rotate. But if you can only pick one Epic skin for Xerath, this is the one.

Still in the shop, permanent availability. No vault rotation nonsense. Been playing Xerath since season 4 I think or 5 dont remember exactly, and this skin has held up remarkably well for something released in 2015. The VFX still look modern, the theme is unique in his skin catalog, and the price is standard Epic. Top pick for Xerath mains, easy recommend. Skip it only if you hard committed to Arcana already and dont want overlap in your collection.
