Not gonna lie, Battlecast Xerath caught me off guard the first time I saw it in a ranked game back in like season 3. Xerath already looks like a floating energy construct, so slapping the Battlecast treatment on him felt like a natural fit. The mechanical frame, the red energy core, the industrial vibe. It just works for a champion who’s basically a living artillery cannon. Been running this off and on since maybe 2014 and I keep coming back to it even with newer options in the shop.
What Battlecast Xerath actually changes
So this is a Standard tier skin at 520 RP, which means you’re not getting a full overhaul. Voice lines stay base, no new recall animation, nothing fancy on that front. But what you do get is a solid model swap that turns Xerath from his default arcane energy look into a Battlecast machine. The color palette shifts to reds and dark metallics. Feels industrial.
The VFX got a subtle touch. Your Q poke in lane reads a little differently with the reddish energy, and honestly thats one of the reasons I prefer it over base Xerath for ranked. Could be wrong here but the W circle feels slightly more visible to me against certain Rift terrain. Not a competitive advantage or anything, just a visual preference from someone who’s played maybe 150 games on Xerath across seasons.
The model itself has Xerath encased in this mechanical frame with tubes and plating. Very Viktor-adjacent design language. Playing this skin, the silhouette reads clean from the backline where you’re usually sitting and throwing Q poke every 4 seconds. No new animations for the ult either, but the red energy channeling through the mech frame during R looks decent enough for a 520 RP skin. Standard voice, no new lines from Michael McConnohie.
The Battlecast line and where Xerath fits
Battlecast Xerath released October 5, 2011. Early days of League. The Battlecast skinline is one of Riot’s older thematic sets, the one where Viktor supposedly converts champions into war machines. Vel’Koz, Kog’Maw, Skarner, Nasus, Zac all got Battlecast skins too. Xerath’s entry is one of the earlier ones in the line.
No splash artist credited in the data for this one, which tracks for skins from that era. Riot wasnt exactly documenting everything back then. The splash itself is solid for 2011 standards. Dark background, Xerath’s mech frame glowing red, energy crackling. It does the job. (Random aside: I used to have this as my League client background for an entire season before they changed how that worked.)
No chromas available for Battlecast Xerath. Zero. Which is a shame because I think an Obsidian or blue variant would look clean on this model. But at 520 RP I guess Riot figures the skin doesnt warrant the chroma treatment. Available any time in the shop, permanent stock, no vault nonsense.
Should you pick up Battlecast Xerath?
Verdict time. At 520 RP this is probably the cheapest way to get a different look on Xerath that actually feels like a different fantasy. Runeborn is his other budget option but Battlecast has more personality in my opinion. If you’re climbing with Xerath mid and want something that isn’t default but you’re not ready to drop 1350 on Dark Star or Arcana, this fills that gap.
Real talk though, it shows its age. Season 2 era skin design compared to what Riot puts out now is night and day. The model holds up okay but the VFX are minimal changes. Last Tuesday I was in a Diamond game where the enemy Xerath had Astronaut and the particle difference was noticeable. Still, 520 RP is two coffees. Worth it if you main Xerath and want variety in your skin rotation without spending real money. Skip it if you already own Dark Star or Arcana, those are just better executions on a different Xerath fantasy. For one-tricks who want every Xerath skin in the collection, this is an easy pickup at that price point.
