First time I saw Commando Lux loading in, I thought someone on my team picked the wrong skin by accident. Not gonna lie, it caught me off guard. This is one of those early skins that feels like Riot was still figuring out what direction to take champion cosmetics, and Lux ended up in military fatigues. Thats the whole pitch. Lux in camo with a beret. Could be wrong here but I think this was peak “just slap a theme on everyone” era from Riot, and honestly it has a weird charm to it.

What Commando Lux actually changes

So this is a Standard tier skin at 520 RP, which means you’re getting a model swap and thats it. No new VFX on her Q, W, E, or R. Voice lines stay base. No recall animation changes. The light binding still looks the same, Prismatic Barrier still flies out identically, Lucent Singularity pops the same way. Her ult laser is unchanged.

What you do get is Lux in full military gear. Green camo outfit, tactical beret, and her staff gets a militaristic redesign that honestly looks more like a radio antenna than a light staff. The color palette shifts from her bright white and blue default to olive drab and dark green. Playing this in bot lane specifically, the darker model actually blends into the Rift terrain a bit more than base Lux which is kinda funny for a champion who literally shoots light beams everywhere.

The splash is solid for what it is. Katie ‘TeaTime’ De Sousa handled the artwork and it captures the concept cleanly. Lux crouching with her staff, looking like she’s about to call in an airstrike instead of casting Final Spark. Real talk though, the in-game model shows its age. Season 1 proportions. You can tell this was before Riot started putting serious detail work into 520 RP skins.

The Commando line and when this dropped

Commando Lux released June 17, 2011. Early days. The Commando skinline was one of Riot’s first multi-champion theme sets, and it included champs like Jarvan IV, Garen, Galio, and Xin Zhao all getting the military treatment. The line never got revisited or expanded which tells you something about how it was received.

No chromas for this one. Zero. Given the skin’s age and price point I dont think Riot’s planning to add any either. Shop has it permanently, so if you want it the option is always there. Been playing Lux on and off since season 3 and I think I’ve seen maybe two people use this skin in my Diamond games all last year. It’s rare not because it’s exclusive but because nobody picks it.

Should you pick up Commando Lux?

Verdict time. Lux has what, 18 skins now? Maybe more. And Commando Lux sits at the very bottom of that list for most people. 520 RP is cheap, sure. But when you compare it to what Star Guardian Lux or even Steel Legion Lux offer, the value gap is massive. (Random aside: I keep this skin in my collection purely as a flex that I’ve been around since the early days.)

If you’re a Lux one-trick who wants to own every skin she has, grab it. Completionist tax. For everyone else climbing ranked and looking for something that actually enhances the Lux experience with better particles or a new ult animation, skip this entirely. Spellthief or Steel Legion both cost roughly the same and deliver more personality. Commando Lux is a relic. Cool if you appreciate the history, but I wouldn’t lock this in over literally any of her newer options. Maybe just my experience but every time I equip it in a teamfight heavy comp I forget I’m even wearing a skin, and around 1 AM last Thursday I switched back to Cosmic after two games because the model just felt flat.

Overpriced even at 520 RP when Lux has this many alternatives. Mains only, and even then, think twice.
