First time I saw Ashen Knight Pyke load into my game I genuinely thought it was a different champion. Not gonna lie, the silhouette reads so differently from base Pyke that for half a second in a Diamond ranked match last March I pinged the wrong target. The whole aesthetic shifts from underwater assassin to this spectral knight figure dripping with green-black energy, and it hits harder than any other Pyke skin in the catalog. Period.

How Ashen Knight changes Pyke’s kit

The VFX overhaul is where this Mythic skin earns its price tag. Pyke’s Q charge-up swaps to this ghostly green vortex that actually looks menacing when you’re holding it in lane. The stab version leaves behind these wispy trails that fade into dark smoke. Feels like playing a completely different champion in the bot lane specifically.

His W stealth shimmer gets replaced with a darker, more ethereal fade. Could be wrong here but I think the stealth particles are slightly harder for enemies to track compared to base Pyke. Played maybe 40 games with this skin in season 12 and my successful flanks felt cleaner. Might be placebo, might be the VFX. Either way the E dash trail is gorgeous, this sweeping arc of ashen energy that lingers on the Rift longer than default.

The R execute is the star. Massive. The X marker shifts to this ornate knight’s cross pattern, and the slam down creates a burst of green spectral fire. Been spamming this in Diamond since it dropped and the kill confirm animation never gets old. Three things stood out: ult VFX, recall animation, and the model’s cape physics. Voice lines stay base though. No VO refresh, which for a Mythic tier skin feels like a miss honestly.

The recall animation deserves its own mention. Pyke kneels before a spectral throne that materializes, places his blade down like some dark oath. Way better than any of his other recall animations. (Random aside: I’ve screen-recorded this recall like six times for my Discord server and people keep asking what skin it is.)

The Ashen Knights line and release context

Ashen Knight Pyke dropped March 30, 2022. First skin in the Ashen Knights skinline, which Riot built specifically for the Mythic Essence shop. Jeremy ‘Jermu’ Anninos nailed the splash, the composition with Pyke looming over a crumbling cathedral backdrop captures that dark medieval fantasy Riot was going for.

The Ashen Knights line has since expanded to other champions but Pyke was the debut. Think season 12, right around the time Riot revamped the Mythic content system. Being the launch skin for a whole new prestige-adjacent line puts some weight on it.

One chroma available: Emberwoken. Swaps the green spectral energy to this deep crimson red with dark purple undertones. Kinda feels like it shouldve been the base colorway honestly. The red reads more “ashen knight risen from flames” than the green does. If you’re picking up Ashen Knight Pyke, the Emberwoken chroma is basically mandatory.

Availability is permanent through the Mythic Essence shop. Special pricing, no standard RP cost. You’re looking at saving up Mythic Essence from passes and event rewards. Not the easiest grind but not impossible if you play regularly.

Where Ashen Knight sits among Pyke skins

Pyke has a solid skin roster. Sand Wraith is clean, Blood Moon fits thematically, PROJECT delivers on the tech fantasy. But Ashen Knight Pyke operates in a different space entirely. The Ashen Knights aesthetic gives Pyke this gravitas that his other skins dont touch.

Been maining Pyke with this skin on and off since release. Took it into ranked for about three weeks straight around patch 12.7 and I think the VFX clarity on Q and R actually helped my gameplay. The green energy reads distinctly against most Rift backgrounds, especially in river fights and dragon pit. Last Tuesday around 1 AM I landed a triple ult reset in a teamfight and the kill chain looked cinematic.

Compared to PROJECT Pyke which is the other high-end option, Ashen Knight trades the sci-fi crispness for this dark fantasy weight. PROJECT has better sound design I think but Ashen Knight wins on pure model quality and recall. For support mains who play Pyke as their engage or roaming pick, this is the skin. For one-tricks who lock in Pyke every game regardless of comp, its basically required.

The honest take

Ashen Knight Pyke is the best executed skin in the Ashen Knights line. Top pick for Pyke mains, no question. The Mythic Essence cost means you cant just impulse buy it, which honestly makes it feel more earned when you finally unlock it. The VFX carry the skin hard, the recall is S-tier, and even without new voice lines the overall package delivers.

Fair warning: if you’re not a Pyke player this isnt the skin that’ll convert you. The champion still plays the same, still needs the same hooks and ult resets. But if you already main Pyke and you’re sitting on Mythic Essence with nothing to spend it on, skip everything else. This Mythic skin earns it. The Emberwoken chroma pushes it even further. Seen maybe five of these in my games all season which means you’ll stand out in the loading screen too. Real talk though, that splash art alone is phone wallpaper material.
