LoL Role Preference: Primary, Secondary, Fill

Verified November 7, 2026 · Status: live matchmaking

LoL Role Preference lets you pre-select primary and secondary roles in Summoner’s Rift queue (Top, Jungle, Mid, ADC, Support) — autofill kicks in if queue is slow and your primary role has long waits, and you can set Fill-only mode to always flex into whatever role is needed; higher-rank players with strict role preferences see longer queue times. Symptom → cause → first action

Problem Likely cause First action
Getting autofilled constantly Role preference too strict / queue long Accept Fill for faster queue
Can’t play my main role Autofill or fast queue needed Dodge match or use secondary
Queue 15+ minutes Primary role in low demand Add secondary role or use Fill
Dodging penalizes rank -3 to -10 RR + queue cooldown Plan ahead; don’t dodge frequently
Fill always gives Support Fill prioritizes under-demand roles Normal — Support is often undersupplied
Secondary role played repeatedly Primary demand exceeds supply Reset to different role combo

Role options

Role Primary demand Autofill rate
Top High (bruiser mains) Low
Jungle Medium-high Medium
Mid Highest (popular) Low
ADC High Low
Support Lowest demand Highest
Fill Any role; flex N/A — flex itself

Mid and ADC are most-requested → longest queues. Support fills easiest → shortest queues (but least popular).

Setting your preference

  1. Lobby → click role icons on left.
  2. Primary (yellow): your preferred role.
  3. Secondary (green): backup role.
  4. Click Fill (red): accept any role.
  5. Queue search uses primary first, falls back to secondary, then autofills to any.

How autofill works

  • Autofill triggers when queue search exceeds threshold time.
  • Role demand mismatch (too many mids, few supports) triggers it.
  • Autofilled matches give you a role you didn’t primary-pick.
  • Autofill protection: if autofilled in match 1, less likely for match 2.
  • Queue times drop when you accept Fill or expand to Secondary.

Dodge system

Dodge type Penalty Time cost
First dodge (5 min) -3 RR + 6-min queue timeout ~11 min total
Second dodge -10 RR + 30-min queue timeout ~35 min total
Three dodges in a day -10 RR + 2-hour queue timeout ~2 hours total
Four+ dodges Additional punishment Hours of timeout

Dodging rarely saves time. Better to play the match or accept Fill up front.

Strategies by goal

Goal Approach
Play my main role 100% Set primary only; accept 10-20 min queues at high rank
Faster queue Add Secondary; accept occasional secondary
Fastest queue Use Fill mode; play whatever role needed
Learning all roles Rotate primary across days; mains any role
Climb ranked Focus 1-2 champions per role; narrow but effective

Autofill protection

  • After being autofilled, the next queue has lower autofill probability.
  • Protection resets after a win or specific time.
  • In ranked, protection is weighted more strongly.
  • Not universal — sometimes two autofills in a row happen.
  • Protection lasts roughly 1-3 queues.

Flex queue vs Solo queue

  • Solo/Duo Queue: solo or 2-stack; strict role preference enforced.
  • Flex Queue: any team size 1-5; more lenient role matching.
  • In Flex, role swapping within lobby is common.
  • In Solo, role is locked after queue.

If role preference isn’t working

  • Getting assigned wrong role? → queue search picks fastest match; sometimes you get a secondary.
  • Long queue? → set Fill to speed up.
  • Dodge penalty too harsh? → it’s intentional; don’t dodge.
  • Primary role ignored? → during high queue volume, Riot may expand roles automatically.
  • Autofill protection not working? → sometimes resets quickly after wins.
  • Related: runes, summoner spells, Arena mode, popular roles.
  • Still stuck → Riot ticket.

FAQ

How do I set my role preference?

In the lobby, click the role icons (Top, Jungle, Mid, ADC, Support). First click = Primary (yellow). Second click = Secondary (green). Clicking all five = Fill (red). Click again to clear.

What is autofill?

Matchmaking that assigns you a role you didn’t primary-pick, usually because queue search took too long or your primary role is oversupplied. Common on Support role (always needed, few primary-pick it).

Can I avoid autofill entirely?

Not fully. The only way to minimize autofill is set Primary + Secondary and accept the queue time. At high ranks (Platinum+), strict primary-only picks lead to 15+ minute queues.

What’s the cost of dodging?

First dodge: -3 RR + 6-minute timeout. Second: -10 RR + 30 min. Three+: -10 RR + hours. Rarely worth it — just play the match or accept Fill.

Which role has the shortest queue?

Support — fewest primary-picks mean the most demand. Mid and ADC are common primaries → longest queues.

Does Fill queue affect my rank?

No. Playing Fill doesn’t change RR gains per win/loss. Same rank gains as regular play. You just play a different role than expected.

Does Flex Queue affect role preference?

Flex is more lenient. Teams of 3-5 often negotiate roles in lobby. Solo queue is stricter — your role is locked by queue search, not lobby discussion.
