Tristana Counters: Who Beats Tristana
Updated for patch 26.21. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch.
Tristana counters are bot laners who punish her early, before Draw a Bead stretches her range: longer-range marksmen, poke that wins trades from a distance, and anyone who can root or slow her after a Rocket Jump. Tristana starts with 550 attack range and gains more every level. Hit her hard in the first levels and her scaling arrives too late (or, in a stomp, never).
Five bot laners follow, picked from how their kits handle hers. We kept win rates out of it.

Why is Tristana hard to counter?
- Draw a Bead (passive): her Attack Range grows as she levels.
- Rapid Fire (Q): a short burst of increased Attack Speed. Cooldown 20/19/18/17/16.
- Rocket Jump (W): she propels herself to a distant spot, damaging and briefly slowing units where she lands. Cooldown 22/20/18/16/14.
- Explosive Charge (E): kills make her shots burst into shrapnel, and the active plants a bomb on an enemy that explodes after a short delay. Cooldown 16/15.5/15/14.5/14.
- Buster Shot (R): a cannonball that deals magic damage and knocks the target back, doubling the bomb’s radius on a target carrying it. Cooldown 100.
Tristana’s lane is built on all-ins. She plants Explosive Charge, jumps in with Rocket Jump, and Rapid Fire pumps attacks into the bomb until it pops. If things go wrong, Rocket Jump is also her escape, and Buster Shot knocks away whoever’s on top of her. Late game, Draw a Bead gives her one of the longest ranges among marksmen. Sound scary? The weakness is clear, though: Rocket Jump has a long cooldown in the early levels, and once she spends it to engage on your bot lane, she has no way out of the fight she started.
Which champions are the best Tristana counters?
Caitlyn
At 650 range, Caitlyn outranges an early Tristana by a lot and gets free shots on her every time she walks up for a last hit. Yordle Snap Trap (W) is the real answer to Rocket Jump, though. Traps placed around her own ADC catch Tristana where she lands, immobilizing her for 1.5 seconds with an empowered Headshot ready. 90 Caliber Net (E) slows her and hops Caitlyn backward, out of range of the bomb. Piltover Peacemaker (Q) pierces through the wave. Ace in the Hole (R) finishes a Tristana who jumped in and had to jump back out low.
Miss Fortune
Double Up (Q) bounces a shot off a minion into the champion behind it, so Miss Fortune can poke Tristana without walking forward. Love Tap (passive) adds bonus physical damage whenever she attacks a new target. Make It Rain (E) slows an area, punishing a Tristana who landed from Rocket Jump in the wrong spot. Strut (W) gives Move Speed when she isn’t attacked and Attack Speed on activation. Bullet Time (R) channels a cone of bullets, and every wave can crit, which is brutal if Tristana jumps into the middle of it. Funny enough, she wins the early poke without ever taking a risk.
Xayah
Bladecaller (E) calls all of Xayah’s dropped Feathers back, damaging and rooting enemies they pass, and Double Daggers (Q) plus her attacks after spells drop more Feathers on the ground. A Tristana jumping in lands right on top of them. Featherstorm (R) makes Xayah untargetable as she leaps up, a clean way to avoid an all-in. Deadly Plumage (W) boosts her Attack Speed and damage. Clean Cuts (passive) makes her next attacks after a spell pierce through all targets on their path. Honestly, few champions punish a dive harder.
Ezreal
Ezreal never has to fight on Tristana’s terms. Mystic Shot (Q) pokes from range and shaves his cooldowns when it hits, and Rising Spell Force (passive) stacks Attack Speed with each spell landed. Arcane Shift (E) teleports a short distance and fires a homing bolt, so he can blink away from Rocket Jump or the bomb. Essence Flux (W) sticks an orb that detonates on a follow-up hit. Trueshot Barrage (R) crosses the map. Put simply, he’s safe, and safe beats an all-in champion.
Varus
Varus is a long-range marksman from the start. Varus fires Piercing Arrow (Q) further and harder the longer he charges it, poking Tristana from beyond her early reach. Hail of Arrows (E) desecrates the ground, slowing enemies and lowering their healing, a good zone right where she wants to land. Blighted Quiver (W) stacks Blight on attacks and detonates it with his other spells for max Health damage. Chain of Corruption (R) immobilizes the first champion hit and spreads, so a jumping Tristana gets locked in place. Living Vengeance (passive) gives him damage on takedowns.
How do you play the lane against Tristana?
- Trade before level 6. Draw a Bead grows her range every level, so the early gap is the biggest you’ll get.
- Watch for Rocket Jump. At 22 seconds on rank 1, a Tristana who used it to engage can’t use it to escape.
- Walk away from the bomb. Explosive Charge explodes after a short delay and hits surrounding units.
- Don’t stand near your own minions when she has a bomb on one; kills make her shots burst into shrapnel too.
- Expect Buster Shot when you dive her, because it knocks the target back.
Which items counter Tristana?
Her damage is attacks and crits, so Armor items that blunt both work. Randuin’s Omen takes 30% off Critical Strikes and slows nearby enemies with Humility, a good buy for the frontline she tries to jump past. Plated Steelcaps reduce attack damage by 10%. Frozen Heart’s Winter’s Caress cuts nearby champions’ Attack Speed by 20%, which takes the edge off Rapid Fire. Supports might also consider Thornmail. Exact numbers sit in our LoL items database, and Thornmail is listed on its own page.
When is Tristana at her weakest?
In the early levels. Her range is ordinary at level 1, Rocket Jump has a 22 second cooldown, and her damage depends on items she doesn’t have yet. A bot lane that wins those levels can snowball before Draw a Bead catches up.
Right after an engage too. Rocket Jump is both her gap closer and her escape (one button, two jobs). Once she jumps in, she’s committed, and that’s the moment to lock her down with whatever root, stun or slow your lane has ready.
New to bot lane? The guide to LoL roles explains the ADC job, for what it’s worth, including why the support decides so many lanes. If you’d rather browse her cosmetics, every yordle gunner look Riot has released, from the classic outfits to the newer lines, is gathered on the Tristana skins page. Single-lane play gets its own Tristana ARAM guide (bombs on a bridge). Long story short, Tristana counters trade early, punish the Rocket Jump engage, and keep her from reaching late game with a lead.
FAQ
Who counters Tristana the most?
Caitlyn and Varus, who outrange her early; Miss Fortune and Ezreal, who poke safely; and Xayah, whose Bladecaller roots a Tristana that jumps in.
Does Tristana’s range grow?
Yes. Draw a Bead increases her Attack Range as she levels, so she outranges more champions later in the game.
How long is Rocket Jump’s cooldown?
22/20/18/16/14 seconds, depending on its rank.
What does Buster Shot do?
A magic damage cannonball with a knock-back. If the target is carrying Explosive Charge, the bomb’s detonation radius is doubled.
How did we pick these Tristana counters?
Her patch 26.21 kit was compared with each bot laner’s abilities, without win-rate data.
