Riot Games is moving away from Summoner Names in League of Legends, and that shift brings some changes to how Riot IDs work. Here’s everything you need to know – with a human touch, a bit of complexity, and a sprinkle of surprise.

🛠️ Changing Your Riot ID – The Basics

No matter which Riot game you play – League, TFT, VALORANT, or anything else – the process to change your Riot ID is the same:

  1. Head over to your Riot Account page

  2. Edit your Riot ID and tagline however you want

  3. Click “Save Changes”

That’s it. But if you’re on League of Legends or TFT for PC, you can also make changes in-game:

  • Go to the Shop

  • Hit the Account button

  • Find the Riot ID Change offer

  • Follow the on-screen prompt that redirects you to the Riot account page

  • Input your new Riot ID

Easy, right? But here’s where it gets a little more interesting…

🆓 Free Riot ID Changes – Timing Matters

Mark your calendar: November 20, 2023 was a big day. Riot gave every player a free Riot ID change, no matter how recently they last changed it.

From that point forward, you’ll be eligible for one free Riot ID change every 90 days.

Important exception: If you’ve changed your Riot ID in the last 90 days but are dealing with harassment or negative behavior tied to your name, don’t wait. Contact Player Support, and they’ll help resolve it.

💸 No Paid Riot ID Changes – Here’s Why

There’s no option to pay for extra Riot ID changes. Why? Riot’s making a point: identity management should be free and fair. For a deeper dive into this decision, check out their article on the Riot ID Transition Plan.

🤔 What Even Is a Riot ID?

Think of your Riot ID as your global passport for all Riot titles. One email, one ID, one name people recognize you by – across all games.

Let’s break it down. If your Riot ID is EarlGreyTeemo#sip:

  • Game Name = EarlGreyTeemo

  • Tagline = #sip

Some rules to keep in mind:

Game Name:

  • Must be 3–16 characters

  • Can include letters and numbers

  • Must not be offensive or inappropriate

  • Uniqueness not required – you can share a name, as long as the full Riot ID (including tagline) is unique

Tagline:

  • Must be 3–5 alphanumeric characters

  • Defaults to a region-based code, like #NA1 or #EUW

  • Once you change it, you can’t go back to a region code like:

    • BR, LAN, NA, EUW, KR, JP, and so on

  • If your ID isn’t going through, your tagline might be taken – or restricted. Try something else.

And of course, no offensive taglines allowed either.

Final Thought 💭

Your Riot ID is more than just a name – it’s how you show up in every match, across every Riot game. Whether you’re switching it up for fun or necessity, now you know how to do it right – and what to watch out for.
