How to customize the wheel in Marvel Rivals: AgataSmurf article cover

To customize the wheel in Marvel Rivals, open the Heroes tab from the main menu, pick a hero, go to Cosmetics, then Emotes or Sprays, and equip the items you want into the wheel slots. In a match, hold T on PC or the left D-pad on PlayStation and Xbox to open the wheel, then aim at a slot and release.

How to customize the wheel in Marvel Rivals with emotes and sprays

The part most players miss: wheels are set per hero. Equip a great emote on Spider-Man and it won’t show up when you switch to Luna Snow. So if your wheel looks empty or “wrong” mid-match, that’s usually why.

How do you open the wheel in Marvel Rivals?

Hold T on keyboard, or hold the left D-pad on a controller. While holding, move the mouse or the right stick toward a slot (say, the top one) and let go.

Platform Open the wheel Pick a slot
PC (keyboard and mouse) Hold T Move the mouse, release T
PlayStation 5 Hold left on the D-pad Right stick, then release
Xbox Series X|S Hold left on the D-pad Right stick, then release

These are the defaults. You can rebind the key in the game’s controls settings. On controller the D-pad binding rarely clashes with anything, so most console players leave it alone. On keyboard, T sits right next to the keys most heroes use for abilities, so a mis-press mid-fight is easy (we’d move it to a mouse side button). Funny enough, plenty of PC players only find the wheel by accident.

How do you set up emotes for each hero?

Through the hero’s cosmetics. With 40-plus heroes on the roster, that adds up, so start with the ones you play.

  1. From the main menu, open the Heroes tab.
  2. Select the hero you want to set up.
  3. Open Cosmetics.
  4. Choose Emotes (or Sprays).
  5. Pick an item you own and click Equip, then choose the wheel slot for it.
  6. Repeat for other slots, then for sprays.

Emotes are tied to the hero they belong to, so a Rocket Raccoon emote only appears on Rocket’s wheel. Sprays sit in the same Cosmetics menu, one hero at a time. Newer seasons also added emojis to the same wheel, so it now has separate tabs for Emotes, Sprays and Emojis.

Test it before you queue. The Practice Range loads in seconds, has no teammates waiting on you, and lets you hold the wheel button as often as you like to check that every slot shows what you expect, the right emote in the right place, the sprays you actually want on top. Doing that once per hero saves the awkward moment of firing off the wrong animation in a ranked spawn room, which, to be fair, happens to everyone at least once.

Short version: menu first, Practice Range second.

How long does it take? A couple of minutes per hero, maybe five if you own a lot of cosmetics and keep changing your mind about which spray goes on top. Set up your three or four mains first, for example one Vanguard, one Duelist and one Strategist, and leave the rest.

Where do you get emotes and sprays?

Mostly from the seasonal battle pass, the in-game store, where emotes are sold for Units, and limited-time events. Achievements add more, and every hero comes with a basic set.

Free players do fine here, for what it’s worth. The free track of each season’s battle pass includes cosmetics, and limited events have handed out sprays for logging in and finishing matches. Paid emotes are the flashy ones, sure. But a well-timed free spray on the payload says the same thing for zero Units.

If you’re thinking about a second account to try other heroes, our guide to free Marvel Rivals accounts explains how to make one properly, since cosmetics don’t transfer between accounts.

What is the communication wheel in Marvel Rivals used for?

Quick expression without typing: celebrate, greet, taunt or thank a teammate. Pings are a separate system for marking enemies and locations, and in a 6v6 game with a dozen ultimates flying around, pings do far more for your team.

Thing is, the emote side of the wheel is mostly social. It won’t win fights. Pings and voice chat do the real coordination, and if your mic isn’t working, our page on how to activate your microphone in Marvel Rivals walks through the settings. Use the wheel for the moments between fights: the spawn room before a payload push, a captured point, the MVP screen.

  • Spawn room before a round: the classic time for an emote.
  • After a team wipe, a spray marks the spot (and usually annoys the other team a little).
  • At match end, during the post-game screen moments.
  • Mid-teamfight? Don’t. Emoting locks you into an animation, and that’s how you lose a 1v1.

Why is my wheel empty or not opening?

Usually one of three things: nothing is equipped on that hero, the key has been rebound, or another menu or the chat box has focus.

Start with the hero. Switch to the Heroes tab, open that character’s cosmetics and check the emote and spray slots. Empty slots mean an empty wheel. If the slots are filled but nothing opens, look at your control settings for the communication key binding; a remapped key or a conflict with another action is common after people tweak their layout.

On controller, check that you’re holding the D-pad rather than tapping it. A quick tap won’t bring up the wheel. And if you’re typing in chat, the game reads T as a letter, not as the wheel key (obvious once you notice it, confusing until you do).

Console players sometimes hit a different snag: a custom PS5 or Xbox controller layout that moved the D-pad functions around. On PS5 or Xbox, reset the controller bindings to default and hold left on the D-pad again; it takes under a minute.

Still broken after all that? Restart the game. If the wheel works in the Practice Range but not in matches, the problem is almost always a binding clash with something you only use in real games, like a voice chat push-to-talk key.

Which heroes should you set up first?

The ones you play most, ideally one per role. Marvel Rivals splits heroes into Vanguards, Duelists and Strategists, and most players flex between at least two of those.

Role Examples Why set up the wheel
Vanguard Magneto, Doctor Strange, Groot, Thor, Venom Front line, most time on camera at the objective
Duelist Spider-Man, Iron Man, Hela, Psylocke, Black Panther Most eliminations, most chances to celebrate
Strategist Luna Snow, Mantis, Rocket Raccoon, Loki, Jeff the Land Shark Spawn-room time between fights, perfect for emotes

Strategist mains get the most use out of the wheel, oddly. They spend a lot of the match behind the team, with short gaps between heal cycles, and a thank-you spray after a save goes down well with teammates. Not sure which heroes to pick up next? Our Marvel Rivals tier list is a decent starting point.

Can other players see your sprays and emotes?

Yes, everyone in the match can see them, teammates and enemies alike. That’s the whole point, and also the reason to think a second before spraying something on top of a defeated enemy Strategist.

Sprays stay on the surface for a while, so a spray on a doorway an enemy walks past every fight gets seen a dozen times. Emotes play as a short animation of your hero in third person. Neither one reveals anything tactical beyond your position, but in a close fight even that matters: an emote animation is a visible, stationary hero, which a Hawkeye or Black Widow on the other team will happily punish.

Does customizing the wheel matter for ranked?

Not for your rank. Emotes and sprays are cosmetic and don’t affect stats, abilities or matchmaking, so a bare wheel costs you nothing.

Real talk: the one way the wheel can affect ranked is negatively. Spamming emotes at teammates or standing still to taunt while the objective ticks away is a fast way to get reported. Use it to celebrate, not to tilt people. If you want to understand where you’d land and how the ladder works, see our explanation of Marvel Rivals ranks.

Put simply: equip a few favorites on your main heroes, check the key binding once, and the wheel in Marvel Rivals will be there when you want it, and out of the way when you don’t.
