TBC engineering leveling: AgataSmurf article cover

TBC engineering leveling takes you from skill 1 to 375 through roughly 30 recipes, and on the Anniversary servers it still costs more materials than any other profession. The route below needs about 170 Mithril Bars, 135 Thorium Bars, 270 Fel Iron Bars and 160 Adamantite Bars, plus stone, cloth and motes, and you train the Master rank in Outland at level 50.

TBC engineering leveling guide 1-375 for Anniversary servers

How does TBC engineering leveling work?

You craft the cheapest orange recipe available until it turns yellow, then move to the next one, and you visit a trainer every 75 points to raise the cap. Five ranks, five caps: Apprentice stops at 75, Journeyman at 150, Expert at 225, Artisan at 300 and Master at 375. Any Engineering trainer in a capital city teaches the first four. Master is Outland only: Lebowski in Honor Hold teaches it for the Alliance, Zebig in Thrallmar for the Horde, and both require character level 50.

Why is Engineering the expensive one? Two reasons. Almost every recipe eats bars, and later recipes consume most of the useful intermediate parts, bolts, casings and powders alike, so you craft them twice over. Honestly, if you’re not leveling Mining alongside it, budget for buying nearly everything on the Auction House.

Gnomes get a free +15 to Engineering skill from their racial, which keeps each recipe orange for 15 extra points. Small, but over 375 points it saves a noticeable pile of bars.

What materials does TBC engineering leveling need?

This is the full shopping list for the route further down. Numbers assume orange recipes the whole way; green and yellow steps near the end of each bracket can add 10 to 20 percent. Buy a margin. In practice the Thorium and the Adamantite are where you run short.

Classic materials (skill 1 to 300) Outland materials (skill 300 to 375)
60 Rough Stone, 60 Coarse Stone, 30 Heavy Stone, 120 Solid Stone, 60 Dense Stone 270 Fel Iron Bar
66 Copper Bar, 5 Silver Bar, 110 Bronze Bar, 4 Steel Bar 160 Adamantite Bar, 15 Khorium Bar
170 Mithril Bar, 135 Thorium Bar 40 Mote of Earth, 20 Mote of Fire
50 Linen Cloth, 60 Wool Cloth, 20 Mageweave Cloth, 35 Runecloth 30 Primal Earth, 5 Primal Fire
15 Medium Leather, 10 Moss Agate, 25 Weak Flux (vendor) 70 Netherweave Cloth

Weak Flux comes from any Engineering or trade goods vendor. Moss Agate is the one awkward item on the Classic side; if it’s scarce or overpriced on your server, 30 extra Heavy Stone for Heavy Blasting Powder covers the same ten points.

TBC engineering leveling route: skill 1 to 150

Learn Apprentice, buy the stone and copper, and start. Keep all of it. Everything you craft in this bracket gets used: the powder and the bolts feed the bombs, and the Arclight Spanner is a tool you need for the rest of the profession.

Skill Craft Materials
1 to 30 60 Rough Blasting Powder 60 Rough Stone
30 to 50 30 Handful of Copper Bolts 30 Copper Bar
50 to 51 1 Arclight Spanner 6 Copper Bar
51 to 75 30 Rough Copper Bomb 30 Copper Bar, 30 Copper Bolts, 60 Rough Blasting Powder, 30 Linen Cloth
75 to 90 60 Coarse Blasting Powder 60 Coarse Stone
90 to 100 20 Coarse Dynamite 60 Coarse Blasting Powder, 20 Linen Cloth
100 to 105 5 Silver Contact 5 Silver Bar
105 to 125 25 Bronze Tube 50 Bronze Bar, 25 Weak Flux
125 to 135 10 Standard Scope 10 Bronze Tube, 10 Moss Agate
135 to 150 30 Heavy Blasting Powder 30 Heavy Stone

Train Journeyman at 75 before the Coarse Dynamite step, or the recipe won’t be there. Silver Contact at 100 is a five-point filler; if Silver Bars cost silly money on your server, Flying Tiger Goggles do the same job. While you’re in the 135 to 150 stretch, also craft 15 Whirring Bronze Gizmo (30 Bronze Bar, 15 Wool Cloth); you need them for the sheep in the next bracket.

Route for skill 150 to 300: Expert and Artisan

Expert at 150, Artisan at 225, and the specialization choice at 200 (more on that below). This is the Mithril and Thorium bracket, and the Thorium Widget step is where the materials estimate tends to slip, because the recipe turns yellow before you’re done.

Skill Craft Materials
150 to 160 15 Bronze Framework 30 Bronze Bar, 15 Medium Leather, 15 Wool Cloth
160 to 175 15 Explosive Sheep 30 Heavy Blasting Powder, 15 Whirring Bronze Gizmo, 15 Bronze Framework, 30 Wool Cloth
175 to 194 60 Solid Blasting Powder 120 Solid Stone
194 to 195 1 Gyromatic Micro-Adjustor 4 Steel Bar
195 to 200 7 Mithril Tube 21 Mithril Bar
200 to 215 20 Unstable Trigger 20 Mithril Bar, 20 Mageweave Cloth, 20 Solid Blasting Powder
215 to 238 40 Mithril Casing 120 Mithril Bar
238 to 250 20 Hi-Explosive Bomb 40 Mithril Casing, 20 Unstable Trigger, 40 Solid Blasting Powder
250 to 260 30 Dense Blasting Powder 60 Dense Stone
260 to 285 35 Thorium Widget 105 Thorium Bar, 35 Runecloth
285 to 300 15 Thorium Shells 30 Thorium Bar, 15 Dense Blasting Powder

Keep 5 Explosive Sheep and 6 Mithril Tubes. Why? Thing is, the specialization quests at 200 ask for them, and nobody wants to go back to buying Bronze at skill 200. The Gyromatic Micro-Adjustor is a tool like the Spanner, so it stays in your bags for good.

Should you pick Gnomish or Goblin engineering?

At skill 200 you choose one, and switching later is possible but costs gold and a trip, so treat it as a one-time decision. Goblin gives you the explosives side (Goblin Rocket Launcher, the big bombs, the Goblin teleporters), Gnomish the gadgets side (Gnomish Poultryizer, the Gnomish teleporters, the trinkets with a mind of their own).

Does it matter for leveling? No. Every recipe in the route above is usable by both specializations, and the only real difference in the 300 to 375 bracket is which fun items you can craft at the end. Pick by the toys you actually want. For a raiding Hunter on an Anniversary server, to be fair, the choice barely shows up outside of PvP.

TBC engineering leveling route: skill 300 to 375

Fly to Hellfire Peninsula, train Master Engineering, then craft the three “free” parts first. Fel Iron Bolts, Elemental Blasting Powder and Fel Iron Casing all give skill from 300, and later recipes eat every one of them, so none of those bars go to waste.

Skill Craft Materials
300 to 320 114 Handful of Fel Iron Bolts, 20 Elemental Blasting Powder (4 per craft), 52 Fel Iron Casing 270 Fel Iron Bar, 20 Mote of Fire, 40 Mote of Earth
320 to 325 7 Fel Iron Bomb, maybe a few more 7 Fel Iron Casing, 14 Fel Iron Bolts, 7 Elemental Blasting Powder
325 to 335 30 Adamantite Frame 120 Adamantite Bar, 30 Primal Earth
335 to 355 About 70 White Smoke Flare 70 Elemental Blasting Powder, 70 Netherweave Cloth
355 to 360 5 Khorium Power Core 15 Khorium Bar, 5 Primal Fire
360 to 370 15 or more Adamantite Rifle 45 Fel Iron Casing, 30 Adamantite Frame, 60 Fel Iron Bolts
370 to 375 5 or more Field Repair Bot 110G 40 Adamantite Bar, 40 Fel Iron Bolts, 5 Khorium Power Core

The catch is that three recipes here are not on the trainer. White Smoke Flare is a limited-supply vendor recipe (Wind Trader Lathrai in Shattrath sells it, among others) that restocks every few minutes, so camp the vendor or check back. Adamantite Rifle is also a limited-supply vendor recipe. Field Repair Bot 110G drops from the Gan’arg Analyzers in Blade’s Edge Mountains, once per character, and the group respawns every four to five minutes. The rifles are green toward the end and the flares are green most of the way, which is why both quantities say “or more”.

Put simply: get the two vendor recipes before you leave Shattrath, and farm the Field Repair Bot recipe on the way to Blade’s Edge rather than making a separate trip at 370.

How much gold does the 1 to 375 route cost?

It depends entirely on your server’s Auction House, so we won’t invent a number. Not cheap, though. What we can say is where the gold goes: the 170 Mithril and 135 Thorium are the expensive Classic chunk, and the 270 Fel Iron plus 160 Adamantite dominate Outland. Primal Earth and Primal Fire are the sneaky cost, since 30 Primal Earth is 300 Motes of Earth at ten motes per primal.

Mining cuts all of that to the cost of your time. If you’d rather not farm, remember that the bars are the same items you’d buy for Blacksmithing, so prices track each other; our overview of the best WoW professions to pair covers why Mining and Engineering sit together on so many characters, ours included.

What should you craft once you hit 375?

The items you actually keep. Field Repair Bot 110G is the one raid leaders ask for, funny enough more than any weapon. Adamantite Rifle is a fine leveling gun for a Hunter, and the Khorium Power Cores you made at 355 go into the end-game goggles and the flying machine mounts that come with the higher phases. Rocket Boots, the Zapthrottle Mote Extractor and the epic goggles for each armour type are the reasons most people level Engineering in the first place, but the schematics for several of them come from quests, drops and reputation vendors rather than the trainer, so grab them as you go.

If your Hunter is already 70 and you just want the profession done, the shopping list above is the whole job. And if you’re starting from zero on the Anniversary servers, our TBC Anniversary dates page shows which phase is live, which decides how pricey the Outland bars are right now; the WoW characters we have in stock show their current professions too. Look, TBC engineering leveling is a two-evening project once the bars are in your bags, and the route from wow-professions that this guide follows has been the standard one since the original Classic TBC.

FAQ

Where do you learn Master Engineering in TBC?

In Hellfire Peninsula: Lebowski in Honor Hold for Alliance, Zebig in Thrallmar for Horde. You need character level 50 and Engineering skill 300.

How many bars does TBC engineering leveling need?

Roughly 66 Copper, 110 Bronze, 5 Silver, 4 Steel, 170 Mithril, 135 Thorium, 270 Fel Iron, 160 Adamantite and 15 Khorium, assuming orange recipes throughout.

When do you choose Gnomish or Goblin engineering?

At skill 200. Keep 5 Explosive Sheep and 6 Mithril Tubes from the leveling route, because the specialization quests ask for them.

Which TBC engineering recipes are not on the trainer?

White Smoke Flare and Adamantite Rifle are limited-supply vendor recipes, and Field Repair Bot 110G drops from Gan’arg Analyzers in Blade’s Edge Mountains.

Do Gnomes level Engineering faster?

Yes, slightly. The Gnome racial gives +15 Engineering skill, so every recipe stays orange for 15 more points and you use fewer materials.

Can you level TBC engineering without Mining?

Yes, but you buy every bar on the Auction House. Mining alongside Engineering removes most of the cost, which is why the two are usually paired.
