Thunder Lord Ornn

First game I played with Thunder Lord Ornn was back in season 7 right when he launched, and honestly the skin sold me on the champion before I even understood his kit. Not gonna lie, there’s something about a massive ram god covered in storm energy that just hits different when you’re locking in a tank for top lane. Been running this skin on and off since 2017 and it still holds up surprisingly well for one of the earlier Ornn cosmetics.

What Thunder Lord Ornn actually brings to the table

So this is an Epic tier skin at 1350 RP, which means you get new VFX across the board and a fresh recall animation. Voice lines stay base, no filter either. Standard package for the price point.

The VFX work is where Thunder Lord Ornn earns its keep. His Q pillar erupts with crackling lightning instead of the default magma look. Massive visual shift. The W brittle breath gets this stormy blue-white treatment that reads clean against the Rift, especially in river fights around dragon. Could be wrong here but I think the E charge also leaves behind some electrical residue on impact, which is a nice touch for teamfights where everything gets chaotic.

His R is the real showpiece though. Call of the Forge God sends out this enormous storm ram instead of the fire elemental, and when you redirect it back through the enemy backline the lightning trail is genuinely satisfying. Played a game last Friday where I caught their ADC and support with the recast near baron pit and my duo literally said “that looked cinematic.” The ult VFX alone justify picking this over base Ornn in my Diamond games.

The recall has Ornn summoning a storm anvil and forging with thunder. Cool thematic touch. Nothing groundbreaking but it fits the fantasy perfectly. (Random aside: I’ve watched the full recall animation maybe twice in actual games because who stands in base that long on Ornn? You’re always looking for a TP flank or upgrading someone’s mythic.)

The Thunder Lord line and release context

Thunder Lord Ornn dropped August 22, 2017. That was Ornn’s actual champion release date too, so this skin came bundled with his launch. Mike Azevedo nailed the splash, the composition with Ornn standing in a storm with his hammer raised is genuinely one of the better launch skin splashes from that era.

The Thunder Lord skinline is pretty small. Volibear has his Thunder Lord skin too, and thats about it for the main entries. Kinda feels like Riot had plans for a bigger thunder-themed universe but never fully committed. The aesthetic works well for Ornn specifically because his whole forge god identity translates naturally into storm imagery. Lightning and metalwork go together.

No chromas available for this one. Zero. Which is a shame because I think a dark purple or red variant of the storm effects could look incredible. But it is what it is, Riot hasnt gone back to add chromas to most 2017-era skins.

Should you pick up Thunder Lord Ornn?

Real verdict: for Ornn mains this is a solid skin at 1350 RP and its been the default choice for years simply because Ornn didnt get many skins for a long time. Elderwood came later and Space Groove added some variety, but Thunder Lord still has the most “serious” aesthetic if you want your tank to look intimidating rather than goofy.

Shop has it permanently available, so no rush. Might be worth waiting for a sale if you’re not an Ornn one-trick, but for anyone who plays him regularly in ranked its a clean pickup. I keep coming back to this skin specifically for games where I need to frontline and peel, something about the storm VFX makes the engage calls feel more impactful. Season 13 I think I played maybe 40 games of Ornn in Diamond and Thunder Lord was equipped for at least 30 of them.

Best Ornn skin if you want the “real tank” vibe. Choo-Choo Ornn exists for the meme games but when you’re trying to climb and lock in Ornn for a scaling comp, Thunder Lord is the pick. 1350 RP well spent for mains, and even if you only pull him out as a counterpick in certain lanes it elevates the experience enough to justify the price.
