First time I saw Prestige Mecha Kingdoms Garen load into a game I thought someone modded their client. The white and gold color shift from the base Mecha Kingdoms version hits so different it barely registers as the same concept. Been running Garen on and off since season 6 when I was hardstuck Gold, and this Prestige variant is one of those skins that genuinely made me want to lock in the champion more often. Not gonna lie, that says something when you’re a jungle main in Diamond trying to justify a top lane pick.
The golden mech treatment
So Prestige Mecha Kingdoms Garen takes the already massive mech suit from the base skin and drenches it in white plating with gold trim. The silhouette stays identical but the palette swap changes the whole mood. Base Mecha Kingdoms reads as heavy military hardware. This one reads as ceremonial. Royal. The kind of mech a king would pilot, which I guess is the point with Garen’s whole Demacia thing.
VFX got the Prestige treatment too. His Q lights up with golden particles when you wind up the empowered strike, and honestly the impact feels heavier even though thats just placebo from the visual feedback. The E spin is where it really shows – golden energy trails replace the base blue-white, and in a teamfight when you’re spinning through the backline the screen just glows. Looks clean.
His W shield pops with a bright gold barrier effect. Simple change – huge impact on readability actually. You know what surprised me? The R execution sword. The base Mecha Kingdoms already had a massive mech sword dropping from the sky for the ult, but the Prestige version adds this pure white-gold energy sword that cuts through everything. Played maybe 40 games with this skin last season and the ult never got old visually.
The recall animation carries over from base Mecha Kingdoms where Garen summons parts of his mech suit. Same animation, different color scheme. No new voice lines since this is a Mythic tier skin, not a Legendary. Voice stays default. Jamieson Price still doing his thing underneath all that gold plating, standard Garen VO.
Mecha Kingdoms and the Prestige grind
Prestige Mecha Kingdoms Garen dropped January 15, 2020. Right at the start of season 10. The Mecha Kingdoms line launched that same patch with Garen, Leona, Draven, Jax, and Sett getting the mech treatment. Might be overthinking it but I think this skinline was Riot’s answer to the mecha/gundam fantasy that the older Mecha skins (Malphite, Kha’Zix) didn’t fully deliver on. Mecha Kingdoms went bigger. Way bigger.
Sanhua Chen and Kudos Productions handled the splash art. They captured this emperor-on-a-throne energy with the white and gold scheme. The splash reads less “battlefield mech” and more “divine weapon” which fits the Prestige concept perfectly.
As a Mythic skin the pricing is Special, meaning you couldnt just buy it with RP. Back in early 2020 this was a Prestige Points skin, which meant grinding event passes or dropping cash on orbs. Available now through the Mythic shop rotation, so if you missed it the first time around you can still pick it up when it cycles back. No chromas on this one, which makes sense since the whole point of Prestige is the specific white-gold colorway.
(Random aside: I remember the discourse around Prestige skins in season 10 being absolutely wild on Reddit. People were calling them “glorified chromas” and honestly for some champions that criticism landed. Not here though.)
How it plays on the Rift
In my Diamond games specifically, this skin has a weird psychological effect. Could be wrong here but Garen players running the Prestige version tend to be actual mains who grinded for it, not autofill top laners. Last Tuesday I laned against one and the guy knew every matchup timer, every trade window pre-6. The skin signals commitment I think.
Gameplay feel is solid. The Q windup reads cleanly, the E spin particles dont obscure cs or minion health bars which is a real problem on some flashier skins. The ult execution threshold indicator works fine with the gold VFX. Three things stood out: ult clarity, recall animation smoothness, and how well the gold particles render even on lower settings. My buddy plays on a potato laptop from like 2018 and said the skin still looks good on medium graphics.
For splitpush Garen specifically this skin looks great in side lanes where the gold pops against the green Rift terrain. In bot lane skirmishes or dragon pit fights the particles can blend with some terrain effects but nothing game-breaking. Been spamming this in ranked during the last two weeks of the split and the visual clarity holds up in 5v5 engage scenarios.
The honest take
Real verdict: Prestige Mecha Kingdoms Garen is one of the better Prestige skins from the early batch. Some Prestige versions from 2019-2020 were lazy recolors that felt like Riot was testing how far they could push the concept. This one earned it. The white-gold mech fantasy works for Garen’s champion identity in a way that feels natural rather than forced.
If you main Garen and you see this in the Mythic shop rotation, grab it. Top pick for Garen mains who want something beyond God-King but dont want to run the base Mecha Kingdoms blue scheme. It sits in a good spot between flashy and functional. Not the absolute best Garen skin (God-King and Fallen God-King exist) but its in the conversation for top three. Season 9 I think or maybe early 10, this was the definitive flex pick for one-tricks climbing on Garen. Still holds up five years later.
Skip it if you’re not a Garen player though. The Mythic shop currency is too valuable to spend on a champion you play twice a season. Save it for your actual main.
