Elderwood Bard

First time I saw Elderwood Bard in a loading screen I thought someone modded the game. The whole aesthetic just felt different from anything else Riot had put out at that point. Been running this skin since season 5 and honestly its one of those picks that never gets old no matter how many games you queue up.

What Elderwood actually changes on Bard

The model rework here turns Bard into this ancient forest spirit thing. Bark textures across the body, leaves growing out of the mask, the whole nine yards. His meeps get a nature overhaul too, little woodland creatures trailing behind you through river and lane. Played maybe 200 games with this and the meep visuals alone carry it.

New VFX across the board. Q hits with this green energy burst that reads cleaner than base in teamfights. Could be wrong here but I think the stun particle is slightly more visible, which actually matters when you’re trying to peel for your ADC in a chaotic dragon fight. The W heal shrine blooms like a flower on the ground. Pretty but functional. The magical journey portal gets an overgrown tree bark look that fits the fantasy perfectly.

Kinda feels like Riot put extra care into the ult too. Tempered Fate drops this massive amber-gold sphere with leaf particles swirling around it. Last Tuesday I froze three people at Baron with it and my jungler said the VFX looked “cinematic.” Fair point honestly.

The recall animation is new. Bard sits down and plays music while forest creatures gather around. Peaceful stuff. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, but the sound effects on abilities have this earthy reverb that sells the woodland theme hard.

The Elderwood line and where Bard fits

Released March 12, 2015. Early season 5. Bard himself had only been out for like a week at that point, so Elderwood was basically his launch companion skin. Smart move from Riot because it gave Bard mains something premium right out the gate.

The Elderwood skinline is one of Riot’s more consistent themes. Hecarim, Ahri, Ornn, Veigar all got Elderwood treatments over the years. Bard fits the line more naturally than most though. His whole wandering cosmic caretaker vibe translates perfectly into ancient forest guardian. The Elderwood roster keeps growing but Bard remains the one that feels like it was designed for the theme rather than squeezed into it.

No chromas on this one. Zero. Honestly thats fine for a 975 RP skin from 2015, chromas werent really a thing back then. No splash artist credited in the data which is a shame because whoever painted that splash went hard. The colors, the composition, the mystical forest backdrop. Top tier work.

Not gonna lie, for what you get this is one of the better value skins in the game. New VFX, new recall, a model that completely transforms the champion’s fantasy. Most 975 skins from that era gave you a texture swap and called it a day. Elderwood Bard went beyond that. (Random aside: this is still my phone wallpaper after like four years and I dont plan on changing it.)

Real talk though, Bard has gotten some strong skins since. Astronaut, Cafe Cuties, the T1 worlds skin. Competition is real. But Elderwood holds up because it leans into what makes Bard unique as a champion. The roaming, the chime collecting through the jungle, the otherworldly presence. Season 9 I think or 10 dont remember exactly, I tried switching to Snow Day for a month and came right back.

If you one-trick Bard or even just have him in your support rotation, Elderwood is a must-own. 975 RP well spent for mains. Best Bard skin for players who want the fantasy over the meme. Skip Bard Bard if you want something serious and lock this in instead. Been spamming this in Diamond and the skin just hits different when you’re roaming topside at level 3 collecting chimes and ganking the enemy Darius.
