Glacial Skins
All 4 skins in the Glacial skinline. Browse splash art, chromas, and detailed reviews for every Glacial skin in League of Legends.
Glacial is one of those skinlines that takes me back to early League when Riot was still figuring out what a "thematic line" even meant. Four skins, all dropped between 2010 and 2012, and honestly they hold up better than you'd expect for their age. The whole vibe is frozen warriors, ice-crusted armor, blue-white particle work on some of them. Not gonna lie, I have a soft spot for this line because I was spamming Malphite in ranked around that era and Glacial was the first skin I ever bought with RP. Small roster, simple concept, but it works.

What Makes the Glacial Line Stand Out
Kinda feels like Riot looked at the Freljord map aesthetic and said "what if we just froze four dudes." Thats basically the pitch. Ice textures, frozen armor plating, blue-tinted color palettes across the board. The visual signature is consistent even though these skins dropped across two years. Olaf, Malphite, Nocturne, and Shen all get the ice treatment, and the shared element is this crystalline frost layered over their base models.
Compared to something like Blackfrost, which went darker and more menacing with the ice theme, Glacial stays lighter. Think glacier blue, pale white, translucent ice effects. Blackfrost is corrupted ice. Glacial is just... ice. Clean and straightforward. No lore pretension, no alternate universe framing. Just frozen champions on the Rift.
The splash arts from this era were simpler too. Not bad, just a different standard. You look at Glacial Malphite's splash and it reads clearly: big rock guy, now made of ice. Compare that to modern splashes with seventeen background elements and cinematic lighting. There's something refreshing about the directness. Could be wrong here but I think the simplicity actually helps these skins age better than some of the overdesigned 2015-era stuff that tried too hard.
One thing worth noting is the particle work varies a lot across the four. Glacial Malphite being the only Epic at 1350 RP gets actual VFX changes. The Standard tier ones at 520 RP are mostly model swaps with recolored textures. That's the reality of early League skins. You paid less, you got less. But the model work itself is solid for the price point.
Best Glacial Skins to Pick Up
Real talk though, Glacial Malphite is the standout and it's not even close. Only Epic in the line, and it earns that 1350 RP. The ice model replacement on Malphite just makes sense visually. He's already a rock monster, making him an ice monster is the most natural skin concept Riot ever shipped. His Q becomes this frozen boulder, the ult impact feels heavier somehow even though I know thats placebo. Been running this in my Diamond games on and off since season 3 and it still looks clean next to modern Malphite skins.
(Random aside: I once had a Glacial Malphite mirror match in ARAM around 2019 and we both kept ulting each other into walls. Pure comedy.)
Glacial Olaf comes in second. Standard tier, 520 RP, and honestly for that price you get a solid ice viking look. Olaf already has the Norse warrior thing going, so frozen axes and icy armor feel right. The skin doesn't change his abilities visually but the model swap gives him this pale blue berserker aesthetic that reads well in lane. Spammed this one during a ranked grind last December and it held up fine. Not flashy. Functional.
Frozen Terror Nocturne is interesting because they went a different direction with the naming. Not "Glacial Nocturne" but "Frozen Terror." The skin turns his shadow form into this ice wraith thing and honestly in teamfights when he ults the blue-white color scheme pops against the darkness of Paranoia. Might be overthinking it but I think it's one of the more underrated cheap Nocturne skins. For 520 RP you could do worse.
Frozen Shen rounds out the line. Similar deal to Olaf: 520 RP, model swap, ice-themed armor. Shen's kit is mostly invisible effects anyway (spirit blade, taunt) so a Standard skin works fine on him. The frozen armor plating looks decent in the top lane. Not his best skin by any stretch but it's cheap and clean. I've seen maybe five people use this skin in my games all season and thats being generous.
The Champion Roster
Four champions. Olaf, Malphite, Nocturne, Shen. All released between 2010 and 2012, back when Riot would drop a skin for whoever and move on without planning a full thematic event around it.
Malphite fits the line best. Just does. Rock into ice is the easiest translation in the game. Olaf second because the Freljord connection is already there in his base lore. Frozen viking, ice axes, it all tracks. These two feel intentional.
Nocturne is the weird one. Shadow demon turned ice demon works visually but doesn't have the same thematic logic. Not complaining because Frozen Terror Nocturne actually looks good, but if you showed me the lineup without context I'd wonder why Nocturne is here. Shen makes more sense than Nocturne at least. Ninja in ice armor. Simple but it works. Been maining top lane on and off and I appreciate that Shen has a cheap skin option in this line.
Who should get a Glacial skin next? Honestly the line hasnt been touched since 2012 so I doubt Riot revisits it. But if they did, Trundle is the obvious pick. He's literally a Freljord troll with an ice pillar ability. Sejuani would fit too. Maybe Braum with a frozen shield. Could be coping but I'd love to see a modern Epic-tier Glacial Braum with updated VFX. Riot if you're reading this, just one more Glacial skin. Please.
The roster being this small actually gives the line a boutique feel. Not every skinline needs 15 champions. Four frozen warriors, in and out, nobody gets confused about what the theme is.
Tier and Price Breakdown
Three Standards at 520 RP each and one Epic at 1350 RP. That's it. The price range is tight and the line is budget-friendly overall. You could own every Glacial skin for under 3000 RP total which is less than a single Ultimate skin.
The Standards do Standard things. Model swaps, texture changes, no new particles or voice lines. Voice stays default on all four. For 520 RP in 2010-2012 that was normal. The Epic on Malphite carries the line's production value. New VFX on abilities, updated model, the full package you'd expect at 1350.
Fair warning, if you're used to modern 1350 RP Epics with custom recalls and homeguard animations, Glacial Malphite won't match that standard. It's an older Epic. But for its era the quality holds. I still lock it in over some of Malphite's newer options just because the ice aesthetic is that clean. 1350 feels fair for what you get even by today's standards. The three Standards at 520 are no-brainers if you play those champions at all. Cheapest way to get a different look on the Rift.
Not sure if it's just me but I think budget skinlines like Glacial deserve more respect. Not everything needs to be a 1820 RP Legendary with a new voice actor and 47 unique animations. Sometimes you just want your champion to look like they're made of ice. Done. Next game.
Glacial Skins FAQ
How many Glacial skins are there?
Four total. Glacial Olaf, Glacial Malphite, Frozen Terror Nocturne, and Frozen Shen. All dropped between 2010 and 2012. Small lineup but honestly it covers the theme without overstaying its welcome. Riot hasnt added to the line since then so four is probably the final count unless they surprise us.
What is the best Glacial skin?
Glacial Malphite. Not even a contest. Only Epic in the line at 1350 RP, gets actual VFX changes, and the ice rock monster concept just works perfectly on Malphite's kit. Been my go-to Malphite skin for years. The three Standards are fine but Malphite carries the whole skinline on his frozen shoulders.
Which champions have Glacial skins?
Olaf, Malphite, Nocturne, and Shen. Malphite and Olaf fit the ice theme naturally. Nocturne is the wildcard pick but Frozen Terror actually looks solid. Shen rounds it out with a clean frozen armor look. All four are fighters or tanks which makes sense for an ice warrior line.
Does Glacial have Legendary skins?
No Legendaries. The highest tier is one Epic, Glacial Malphite at 1350 RP. The other three are all Standard tier at 520 RP each. This line came from an era when Riot rarely made Legendary skins for themed sets. If they ever revisited Glacial I could see a Legendary happening but I wouldn't hold my breath.
When did the Glacial skinline release?
First Glacial skin dropped in 2010. The line ran through 2012 with all four skins releasing across that window. Early League era, back when skin releases were less coordinated. No big event, no cinematic trailer. Just ice-themed champion skins added to the shop one at a time over two years.
Are Glacial skins worth buying?
If you main any of these four champions, yeah. The 520 RP Standards are cheap enough that there's basically no risk. Glacial Malphite at 1350 RP is worth it for Malphite mains specifically, the ice VFX look great even by modern standards. Just don't expect modern production quality from skins that are 14 years old. Temper expectations and you'll be happy.
Do Glacial skins have chromas?
Nope. Zero chromas across the entire line. These skins predate the chroma system by years. Chromas didn't become a thing until 2015 and Riot typically doesn't retroactively add them to older budget skins. What you see is what you get. The base ice color palette is it.
Will Riot make more Glacial skins?
Probably not. The line hasn't been touched since 2012 and Riot has newer ice-themed skinlines like Blackfrost and Winterblessed that fill the same niche with higher production value. Could be wrong here but I think Glacial is effectively retired. Would love to be surprised though. A modern Glacial Trundle or Braum skin would be incredible.
