Vel'Koz

Vel'Koz Skins

6 skins available

Vel'Koz is one of those champions where Riot clearly had fun with the skin concepts but never pulled the trigger on a Legendary. Six skins total spanning almost a decade. Not a huge collection by any stretch, but honestly the hit rate is surprisingly solid for a champ that sits at maybe 2% pick rate on a good day. Been playing Vel'Koz on and off since season 5, mostly as support but sometimes mid when I feel like actually carrying, and I've owned every skin at some point. Some stayed in rotation. Some got benched after a week. Thats just how it goes with a champion who has such clean base animations that skins need to really earn their spot.

The Full Vel'Koz Skin Catalog

Six skins from 2014 to 2023. For context, Vel'Koz dropped in February 2014 and Battlecast came out the same year. So Riot was already cooking skins for the eye monster before players even figured out his kit. Could be wrong here but I think Vel'Koz might have one of the better skin-to-year ratios for low-pickrate champions. Not amazing, not terrible. Consistent.

The breakdown is pretty straightforward. Five Epics at 1350 RP each and one Standard skin at 750 RP. No Legendary. No Ultimate. No Mythic or Prestige. Just a solid lineup of 1350s and one budget option. Kinda feels like Riot knows the Vel'Koz playerbase is small but loyal enough to buy every skin that drops, so they keep it moving without investing Legendary-level resources.

Battlecast kicked things off in 2014. Then Arclight in 2015. Definitely Not Vel'Koz showed up as the comedy pick. Infernal landed later, Blackfrost after that, and Bee'Koz closed things out in 2023. Roughly one skin every year and a half if you average it out. Season 8 through 12 was the most active stretch. (Random aside: I remember checking the PBE every patch cycle during season 10 hoping for a Dark Star Vel'Koz that never came.)

The real story here is that every Epic skin actually changes the particle effects meaningfully. Vel'Koz lives and dies by his Q/W/E/R visuals since he's basically a laser turret with geometry. When your entire gameplay loop is landing skillshots and watching things disintegrate, the VFX matter more than on most champions. So even though there's no Legendary with new voice lines or animations, the Epics pull more weight than you'd expect.

Best Vel'Koz Skins Worth Locking In

Arclight Vel'Koz. Full stop. Been running this as my default since I bought it back in maybe 2016 or 2017 and nothing has dethroned it. The golden particle effects on Q feel crisp. W eruptions have this bright holy energy that reads perfectly against the Rift's darker terrain. And the R beam - the whole reason you play Vel'Koz - turns into this concentrated pillar of light that just looks right. Not gonna lie, I think the Arclight fantasy suits Vel'Koz better than almost any other champion in the line. Ancient knowledge deity shooting divine lasers? Perfect thematic fit.

Blackfrost takes second place for me. The ice-corrupted aesthetic works because Vel'Koz already has that alien void creature energy, and layering frost effects on top creates something genuinely menacing. Q splits feel heavier with the dark ice particles. The ult beam has this frozen wind tunnel visual that I keep coming back to. Played maybe 80 games with Blackfrost last season in Diamond and it never got stale.

Battlecast Vel'Koz is the OG and still holds up. Might be overthinking it but the mechanical redesign gives Vel'Koz a completely different silhouette while keeping the hitboxes readable. Red laser effects on everything. The ult especially goes hard with the Battlecast treatment. Viktor mains who also play Vel'Koz probably gravitate toward this one for the shared skinline fantasy.

Bee'Koz is the wildcard. Released 2023 as part of the Bees! line. Polarizing. Either you love the goofy honey-dripping tentacle eye or you think it ruins the champion's vibe. Personally I respect the commitment to the bit. The W honeycomb eruptions made me laugh the first time I saw them in an ARAM last March. Not a serious ranked skin for me but its fun when you want to tilt the enemy mid by killing them with a literal bee.

Infernal rounds out the top five. Solid execution. Fire particles look clean on all abilities. But it sits in this weird spot where its good but not distinct enough to pick over Arclight or Blackfrost. The fire theme works on basically any champion, and Vel'Koz doesnt do anything special with it that you haven't seen on Infernal Varus or Infernal Diana.

Skinlines and How They Fit the Void Eye

Six skinlines for six skins. No repeats. Battlecast, Arclight, Definitely Not, Infernal, Blackfrost, and Bees! - Vel'Koz has been scattered across themes like Riot keeps trying different genres to see what sticks. Not sure if it's just me but I think the variety actually works in his favor. Each skin feels distinct because there's no overlap.

Arclight fits best. The divine cosmic entity angle plays directly into Vel'Koz's lore as a void creature obsessed with understanding reality. Swap "void" for "divine light" and the character concept barely changes. That's why the skin resonates. It's not just a palette swap, it's a genuine alternate universe version of the champion.

Blackfrost is the runner-up thematically. Void and ice both carry that alien inhuman energy. The Blackfrost line as a whole tends toward corrupted nature spirits and ancient frozen horrors, which maps cleanly onto a floating eye monster from the void. (Sidebar for support Vel'Koz players specifically: Blackfrost pairs visually with Blackfrost Thresh if your duo wants to coordinate.)

Battlecast works because of the Creator Viktor connection. Vel'Koz reimagined as a mechanical surveillance drone fits the Battlecast lore. Definitely Not is pure comedy. And Bees! is Bees! - you either commit to the meme or you dont. The skinline diversity means Vel'Koz mains have a skin for every mood. Tryhard ranked session? Arclight. Chill normal game? Bee'Koz. Feeling nostalgic for season 4? Battlecast.

Budget vs Premium Picks

This is where Vel'Koz gets interesting. The entire collection sits at 1350 RP except Definitely Not Vel'Koz at 750. There's no Legendary tier to chase, no Ultimate to save up for. The ceiling is 1350 and the floor is 750. Simple math.

Definitely Not Vel'Koz at 750 RP is genuinely funny but it's a Standard skin. Minimal VFX changes. The disguise gag carries it but in actual gameplay you're basically playing with base particles wearing a fake mustache. Real talk though, for 750 it delivers exactly what you'd expect. Just don't go in expecting Epic-level treatment.

Best value in the whole collection is whatever Epic goes on sale first. They all retail at 1350 but hit the Your Shop or weekly sales at 675-810 RP range. If Arclight shows up at 675 in Your Shop thats an instant buy. Best skin in the collection for half price. Been telling my duo partner this for two seasons now and he still hasnt pulled the trigger. At full 1350 every Epic skin is fair for what you get. Vel'Koz E into W into R is just more satisfying when the particles are custom.

Since there's no Legendary, you never have to make the "is 1820 worth it" calculation. Every purchasing decision is 1350 or less. Low stakes. Grab whichever one matches your aesthetic and move on. Maybe pick up a second one when it hits sale. For a champion with only six skins the collection is cheap to complete if you're that type of collector.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many skins does Vel'Koz have?

Six skins total as of 2023. Battlecast, Arclight, Definitely Not, Infernal, Blackfrost, and Bee'Koz. Not a massive collection but pretty respectable for a champion with Vel'Koz's pick rate. Been waiting for number seven since Bee'Koz dropped and nothing yet. Riot takes their time with the eye.

What is the best Vel'Koz skin?

Arclight Vel'Koz. The golden VFX on Q, W, and especially the R beam look incredible on the Rift. Thematic fit is perfect too. Divine cosmic laser entity just works. Been my go-to Vel'Koz skin for years and I switch back to it every time I try something else. Blackfrost is a close second if you prefer the darker aesthetic.

What is the cheapest Vel'Koz skin?

Definitely Not Vel'Koz at 750 RP. Standard tier skin with the disguise gimmick. Funny concept, minimal particle changes. Good for the meme factor in normals or ARAM but if you want actual VFX upgrades you're looking at 1350 for any of the five Epics. The price gap isnt huge honestly.

Does Vel'Koz have a Legendary skin?

Nope. No Legendary, no Ultimate, no Mythic. The highest tier Vel'Koz reaches is Epic at 1350 RP. Five of his six skins sit at that price point. Honestly a Legendary Vel'Koz with new voice lines and a reworked ult animation would be incredible but Riot hasnt committed to it yet. Maybe someday.

What skinlines is Vel'Koz in?

Six different skinlines with zero repeats. Battlecast, Arclight, Definitely Not, Infernal, Blackfrost, and Bees! - each skin sits in its own thematic universe. Good variety. Arclight and Blackfrost fit the champion fantasy best in my opinion. Battlecast is the classic. Bees! is the meme pick. Something for everyone.

Does Vel'Koz have chromas?

Some of his Epics do have chromas available. Infernal and Blackfrost both got chroma sets. If you want extra color options beyond the base skin variants those are your best bet. Chromas on Vel'Koz change the tentacle and eye colors which is a nice touch. Worth grabbing if you already own the skin.

When was Vel'Koz's last skin released?

Bee'Koz dropped in 2023 as part of the Bees! skinline. Goofy honey-themed skin with custom particles. Before that it was Blackfrost. So Vel'Koz gets a new skin roughly every year and a half on average. Not the fastest cadence but not abandoned either. Could use something fresh though, been a while now.

Is Vel'Koz worth buying skins for?

If you play him regularly then absolutely. Vel'Koz is a VFX-heavy champion where you stare at particle effects all game. Q geometry, W eruptions, R beam - custom particles make a real difference on this champ specifically. Even one Epic skin at 1350 changes the experience noticeably. Arclight or Blackfrost are the safest buys for any Vel'Koz main.
