What Causes League of Legends Not to Open

Three processes need to start: LeagueClient.exe, RiotClientServices.exe, Vanguard. Miss one, game’s dead.

Six things cause league of legends not opening most in 2026:

  • Corrupted game files. A patch failed halfway or a disk write went wrong. The client starts loading then stops cold.
  • Old GPU drivers. Riot updates its renderer pretty often. A driver that is 6 months stale will eventually stop working with the current client.
  • Firewall or antivirus. Bitdefender’s Advanced Threat Defence is the one that comes up most. It kills LeagueClient.exe silently with zero notification.
  • Software with overlays. Razer Synapse, Discord overlay, GeForce Experience ShadowPlay, MSI Afterburner. Kill them in Task Manager before you launch.
  • Vanguard not starting. League won’t open without Vanguard running. If it gets disabled or your antivirus blocks vgc.exe, the game dies before it loads.
  • Bad Windows or .NET update. A Windows update in January 2026 broke Vanguard on certain hardware. Missing .NET Framework versions cause silent crashes too.

Understanding the cause speeds up the fix. Six root causes account for almost all LoL launch failures.

r/leagueoflegends, early 2026, 400+ upvotes. Guy reinstalled Windows twice. Still broken. Moved League to C: drive, mid-install a .NET Framework update appeared that had never shown up before. That was it. Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates, check for .NET.

Quick Checks Before Anything Else

Two quick things first:

  1. Check Riot server status. status.riotgames.com, pick your region. Patch days the servers go down for 1-3 hours. Nothing you do locally will help while they’re down.
  2. Full restart. Not sleep. Shutdown and boot. Crashed sessions leave LeagueClient.exe stuck in the background. League of Legends not opening from a clean shortcut with no error is often just this.

How to Fix League of Legends Not Opening: 10 Working Methods

Fix 1: End All Riot Processes in Task Manager

Start here. Double-click, nothing happens. LeagueClient.exe from the last session is still running.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Go to the Details tab.
  3. Find LeagueClient.exe, right-click it, and select End process tree.
  4. Do the same for RiotClientServices.exe.
  5. Go to C:\Riot Games\League of Legends and launch LeagueClient.exe directly. Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.

Had this myself after a March 2026 Windows Update. Two stuck processes, shortcut useless. Killed both, launched from the folder directly.

Fix 2: Run League of Legends as Administrator

Flashes and closes, no error.

  1. Right-click the League of Legends shortcut on your desktop.
  2. Click Properties, then go to the Compatibility tab.
  3. Check Run this program as an administrator.
  4. Click Apply, then OK.

Set once, stays. No need to redo after patches.

Fix 3: Allow League of Legends Through Windows Firewall

Stuck on loading screen forever? Windows Defender is blocking something. Add exceptions.

  1. Search for Windows Defender Firewall in the Start menu and open it.
  2. Click Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall.
  3. Click Change settings, then Allow another app.
  4. Browse to C:\Riot Games\League of Legends and add LeagueClient.exe.
  5. Also add C:\Riot Games\Riot Client\RiotClientServices.exe and C:\Program Files\Riot Vanguard\vgc.exe.
  6. Check both Private and Public boxes for each, then click OK.

Third-party antivirus is separate. Bitdefender’s Advanced Threat Defence kills Riot processes silently. No popup, no log, nothing. Disable real-time protection for a minute, try launching. Works? That confirms league of legends not opening was antivirus. Add the entire C:\Riot Games folder to Bitdefender’s exclusions. Same for any other antivirus.

Fix 4: Update Your GPU Drivers

Black screen then crash, or loading screen never appears. GPU driver. Riot ships renderer updates pretty regularly.

  • NVIDIA: Open GeForce Experience, click the Drivers tab, and install the latest version.
  • AMD: Open Radeon Software, go to the Updates section, and download the recommended driver.
  • Intel (integrated graphics): Open Intel Driver and Support Assistant and let it scan for updates.

Restart after. Don’t skip it. Driver isn’t active until the next boot.

Fix 5: Close Conflicting Background Applications

Razer Synapse is the one that breaks League more than anything else. Every patch season, same complaints. Discord overlay and GeForce ShadowPlay cause it too.

  • Razer Synapse
  • Discord (in-game overlay)
  • NVIDIA GeForce Experience (ShadowPlay overlay)
  • OBS Studio
  • MSI Afterburner / RivaTuner Statistics Server
  • Any VPN running at startup

Close them all, try launching. If League opens, re-enable one by one. You’ll find the bad one fast. This is a common reason league of legends not opening gets blamed on the client when it’s actually Razer. For Discord: Settings > Game Overlay, turn it off.

Fix 6: Run the Hextech Repair Tool

Sticks at 0%, or gets halfway then closes. A file is broken. Use the Hextech Repair Tool. It scans and patches without a full reinstall.

  1. Download the Hextech Repair Tool from the Riot support site.
  2. Run it as administrator.
  3. Select League of Legends from the list.
  4. Click Start Scan and wait for it to finish.
  5. Restart and launch League.

You can also do this from the Riot Client without downloading anything extra. Click the gear icon at the top right and hit Initiate Full Repair. Takes 5 to 15 minutes depending on your drive. I ran it after a failed January 2026 patch and it replaced around 340 MB of broken files.

Fix 7: Update or Roll Back Your Operating System

League broke right after a Windows update? January and April are the bad months. Microsoft ships big builds, Vanguard chokes on them. That happened with a January 2026 Windows 11 build. Riot officially told people to update or roll back.

To update: Windows Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. Install everything, optional updates included. Restart.

To roll back: Settings > System > Recovery > Go back. Goes away after 10 days.

Also check Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates for .NET Framework. This is the one people miss. League of Legends not opening after a reinstall and you can’t figure out why? Check optional updates. One guy on PC Gamer forums tried a full Windows reinstall, still broken. He installed the optional .NET update afterward. Done.

Fix 8: Reduce Screen Resolution Below 1600px

Sounds dumb. Works. Running 1440p or 4K? Drop the resolution to under 1600px and try launching. r/leagueoflegends has had a steady stream of people reporting this fixed it for them through 2025 and 2026.

Right-click desktop > Display settings > drop the resolution below 1600px. Try launching. Once you’re in-game change it back through video settings.

Fix 9: Clean Reinstall League of Legends

Did everything above and League of Legends is not opening still? Regular uninstall leaves folders behind in AppData and ProgramData. New install goes in on top of broken old files. Full clean wipe:

  1. Uninstall League of Legends via Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program.
  2. Go to C:\Riot Games and delete the League of Legends folder.
  3. Press Windows + R, type %appdata%, and delete the Riot Games folder inside AppData\Roaming.
  4. Press Windows + R again, type %localappdata%, and delete the Riot Games folder there too.
  5. Delete C:\ProgramData\Riot Games if it exists.
  6. Restart your PC.
  7. Download the fresh installer from the official site and right-click it to run as administrator.
  8. Install to your C: drive if possible.

Valorant and other Riot games get wiped too. If you were on a secondary drive, try C: instead. .NET update showed up for some people mid-install that had never appeared before and that fixed it.

Work through these eight steps in order. Most players are fixed by step 4 or 5.

Fix 10: Use a VPN to Rule Out Network Issues

Try this last. Some ISPs put hundreds of customers on one IP. Riot sees that IP hammering its servers and rate-limits it. VPN gets you off that IP.

Proton VPN is free. Connect, launch League. If it works, run these in Command Prompt as administrator to sort it without the VPN:

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

League of Legends Not Opening After Champion Select

This one’s different. The client works fine and the lobby runs normally. You lock in your champion, then nothing. A window blinks on the taskbar and disappears. You’re sitting at the reconnect screen.

What actually fixes this:

  1. Go to C:\Riot Games\League of Legends\Game, right-click League of Legends.exe, Properties > Compatibility and uncheck any compatibility mode. It breaks the game loading on modern Windows.
  2. Same Compatibility tab: check Disable fullscreen optimisations.
  3. Kill your overlays. Discord, GeForce Experience, anything recording. All of them.
  4. Check Windows Update > Optional updates for .NET Framework entries and install them.
  5. Still happening? Run full repair from the Riot Client gear icon.

If it’s cutting out mid-game rather than at launch, that’s a network thing. Our League of Legends Ethernet guide covers that separately.

League of Legends Not Opening on Mac in 2026

Mac runs differently. Gatekeeper blocks the client after updates pretty often. On 10.15 Catalina, Vanguard just doesn’t run. No fix. Upgrade.

Symptom Cause Fix
Game blocked immediately after install or update Gatekeeper quarantine on new binaries System Settings > Privacy and Security > scroll down and click Allow next to the League of Legends entry
Client opens but the game itself never launches Corrupted game files from a failed patch Gear icon in Riot Client > Initiate Full Repair, wait for the scan to finish
Game stopped working after a macOS update OS-level library changes breaking the client System Settings > General > Software Update, install all pending updates including security patches
Crash on launch with no error message Vanguard incompatible with current macOS version Upgrade to macOS 13+ if on an older version. If already on 13+, do a clean reinstall
Nothing else works Corrupted install with leftover Riot files Drag League from /Applications to Trash, delete /Users/Shared/Riot Games, empty Trash, reinstall from the official site

macOS 14 shows a popup after updates asking about Riot Games software. Most people hit dismiss without reading. If you did that, go System Settings > Privacy and Security, scroll to the bottom. Blocked extension is there.

League of Legends Not Opening on Windows 10 vs Windows 11

TPM 2.0 off = Vanguard won’t run = League won’t open. Press Windows + R, type tpm.msc. Says “Not Ready”? BIOS on reboot, Del or F2, enable TPM 2.0.

HAGS too. Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Change default graphics settings. Turn hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling on. Find League in the app list below it and set it to High performance.

Windows 10 doesn’t have the TPM thing. Broken there? Antivirus, GPU driver, or bad files. Fix 3, then Fix 4.

Seeing a VAN code? Our Vanguard errors guide has them all.

Vanguard Error Codes That Stop League of Legends from Opening

VAN error before the client loads = Vanguard refusing to start. Different code, different fix. Most common ones in 2026:

Error Code What It Means Fix
VAN6 Vanguard service failed to start, often after an OS update Restart. Still broken: delete C:\Program Files\Riot Vanguard, relaunch Riot Client
VAN9001 TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot off in BIOS BIOS on boot (Del or F2). Enable TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. Save, restart.
VAN1067 Antivirus or third-party driver blocking Vanguard Add vgc.exe and vgm.exe to antivirus exclusions. Also kill any VPNs, VMs, or cheat software running in background
VAN -81 Incompatible driver conflicting with Vanguard Clean boot: msconfig > Services > Hide Microsoft services > Disable all. Relaunch. See what breaks.
VAN84 Vanguard kernel driver failed to load, often a corrupted install Uninstall Vanguard from Control Panel, restart, then launch Riot Client to reinstall it automatically

Any VAN code not in that table, check Riot’s support page directly. Our League of Legends Vanguard errors guide also covers VAN57 and a few others that hit frequently on patch days.

What to Do If League of Legends Shows a Black Screen

Black screen: the window is on the taskbar, something launched, but nothing draws. GPU driver or display scaling.

Quick thing to try first: hit Alt + Enter while the black screen is showing. That toggles fullscreen mode and sometimes kicks the renderer into gear. If something appears, immediately go into video settings and switch to Borderless Windowed.

Full walkthrough is in our League of Legends black screen at launch guide.

Is League of Legends Currently Down?

Worth checking before doing anything else, especially on Tuesday mornings. Riot runs patches roughly every two weeks and the servers go offline for 1 to 3 hours. If your internet works fine on everything else but the client won’t connect, go to status.riotgames.com and check your region before touching anything local. Our League of Legends maintenance guide has the typical patch schedule by region.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is League of Legends not opening?

Usually one of six things: a stuck background process from a previous session, missing admin permissions, Windows Firewall or antivirus blocking LeagueClient.exe, an outdated GPU driver, Vanguard failing to start, or a broken OS update. When League of Legends is not opening from a dead shortcut with no error, it’s almost always a ghost process. Kill all Riot processes in Task Manager first. That alone fixes it for most people.

How do I fix League of Legends not launching on Windows 11?

Start by checking TPM 2.0 is enabled in BIOS, since Vanguard requires it on Windows 11. Then run LeagueClient.exe as administrator, kill any ghost Riot processes in Task Manager, and update your GPU drivers. If none of that works, open Riot Client and run a full repair.

How do I force close League of Legends and restart it?

Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, go to the Details tab, find LeagueClient.exe and RiotClientServices.exe, right-click each and hit End process tree. Then go to C:\Riot Games\League of Legends and launch LeagueClient.exe directly as administrator.

Can antivirus software stop League of Legends from opening?

Yes, and it does not always tell you. Bitdefender with Advanced Threat Defence is the most common culprit. Disable real-time protection temporarily and try launching League. If it opens, add the entire Riot Games folder plus vgc.exe and vgm.exe as permanent exclusions, then re-enable protection.

What is the Hextech Repair Tool and how does it fix launch issues?

It is Riot’s official file scanner. Download it from the Riot support site, run it as administrator, select League of Legends, click Start Scan. It finds and replaces any corrupted or missing files automatically. You can also trigger the same scan from inside the Riot Client under the gear icon.

League of Legends not opening after champion select – how to fix?

Go to C:\Riot Games\League of Legends\Game, right-click League of Legends.exe, Properties, Compatibility tab. Make sure no compatibility mode is checked. Also check Disable fullscreen optimisations. Turn off any overlays from Discord or GeForce Experience. Check optional Windows updates for .NET Framework entries.

Does a VPN fix League of Legends not opening?

Sometimes, if the problem is your ISP throttling or blocking Riot’s servers. Try Proton VPN on a nearby server and launch League. If it works, flush your DNS with ipconfig /flushdns in Command Prompt as administrator. That often makes it permanent without needing the VPN running.

Still stuck after all of this? Contact Riot Support and describe exactly what happens: what you see, what you already tried, your Windows version, and your GPU. In some cases they send a modified client build that fixes hardware-specific issues no general guide covers. But honestly, 90% of these cases get sorted at Fix 1 or Fix 2, so start there.
