Chosen of the Wolf Ambessa

First game I locked in Chosen of the Wolf Ambessa, my duo asked if Riot dropped a cinematic character straight into the Rift. Thats how clean this Legendary reads on screen. Ambessa already has presence as a champion, big model, heavy animations, the kind of toplaner that makes you feel the weight behind every auto. This skin cranks that up. Been running this in Diamond since it dropped and I think the overall package here is one of Riot’s stronger launch skins in a while.

What Chosen of the Wolf actually changes

New VFX across the board. Her Q slam gets this feral wolf energy rippling outward, dark fur-like particles trailing the blade. Feels heavier than base. W shield activation has a spectral wolf head flash for maybe half a second, subtle but noticeable when you’re in a 2v1 toplane situation and popping it to survive the gank.

E dash leaves wolf claw marks on the ground. Not sure if it’s just me but they seem to linger longer than other trail VFX in the game, which actually helps your team read where you dashed in a chaotic teamfight. R is the highlight though. Full wolf spirit emerges behind Ambessa during the ult channel, massive presence. Used it to engage on their backline last Friday night around midnight and my support literally typed “that ult animation goes crazy” in chat.

New voice lines too, performed by Ellen Thomas. The VO sells the Noxian war general fantasy harder than base. Ambessa talks about the wolf, about the hunt, about legacy. There’s a line she drops pre-6 in lane that references conquering weakness. Heavy stuff. The recall animation brings the wolf spirit fully into frame, Ambessa kneeling as it circles her. Clean loop, doesnt overstay its welcome.

(Random aside: the wolf motif reminds me of God-King Darius but executed with more restraint, less over-the-top golden nonsense.)

The Chosen of the Wolf line and release context

Chosen of the Wolf dropped November 6, 2024. Right alongside Ambessa’s champion release, so this was her launch Legendary. Bo ‘chenbowow’ Chen nailed the splash. The composition puts Ambessa front and center with the spectral wolf looming behind, red and dark tones dominating. Portfolio-worthy piece honestly.

The Chosen of the Wolf skinline includes Swain, Katarina, Kindred, and Pantheon. Kinda feels like Riot wanted a Noxus-adjacent thematic that wasn’t just “dark and edgy” but had actual mythological weight. Wolf imagery, chosen warriors, that sort of thing. Ambessa fits it naturally given her lore as a Noxian warlord who earned everything through combat.

6 chromas total. Obsidian is the standout for me, goes full dark wolf aesthetic and reads cleanly against the Rift’s green. Sapphire hits different too, the blue tones against the wolf particles create this frost-predator vibe that wasnt intended but works. Pearl exists if you want the prestige-adjacent look without spending prestige currency. Rest are fine but those two carry the set.

How Chosen of the Wolf Ambessa plays in ranked

Spammed this in Diamond for maybe 40 games since November. The auto attack animations feel slightly different from base. Could be wrong here but the wind-up on her empowered autos reads more clearly with the wolf VFX, which actually helps with cs timing in lane. Might be placebo. Might not be.

Real talk though, the Q VFX telegraph is slightly more visible than base Ambessa’s. In a splitpush scenario or a dive situation this probably doesnt matter. But in a tight teamfight where the enemy ADC is trying to read your engage, the wolf particles might give away your Q range a fraction of a second earlier. Season 14 I think, maybe season 15 at this point, Riot’s been making Legendary VFX flashier at the cost of competitive readability. This skin follows that trend.

The new VO keeps things engaging during long lane phases. Base Ambessa voice lines get repetitive after 200 games. Chosen of the Wolf rotates enough unique lines that I havent hit the fatigue wall yet. Been daily driving this since release and the voice pack alone justifies the upgrade over base for one-tricks.

Should you buy Chosen of the Wolf Ambessa?

Straight talk: if you play Ambessa at all, this is the skin. Full stop. She launched with this Legendary and it feels like it was designed alongside the champion rather than slapped on after. The wolf theme gives her identity something beyond “Noxian general with big sword.” New VFX, new VO, new recall, the full Legendary package and it earns every RP of that 1820 price tag.

Skip it only if you dont play Ambessa. No reason to grab this for the collection if she’s not in your comp rotation. But for Ambessa mains and anyone climbing with her in top or mid, this is the only Ambessa skin worth caring about right now. That ranked game where my Kayn inted top at level 3, I still felt good loading in because the splash screen alone hits. S-tier launch skin. 1820 RP well spent for mains.
