Challenger Skins
All 2 skins in the Challenger skinline. Browse splash art, chromas, and detailed reviews for every Challenger skin in League of Legends.
Not gonna lie, the Challenger skinline is one of those micro-collections that flew under the radar for most players. Two skins. Thats it. Nidalee and Ahri, both rocking this armored competitive aesthetic that screams "I earned my spot in Diamond." The golden trim, the battle-ready stance in the splashes, the whole vibe feels like Riot tried to capture what it means to grind ranked for hundreds of games. Been playing since season 4 and I remember when these dropped. Small line, strong identity.
What Makes the Challenger Line Stand Out
Real talk though. Most skinlines in League try to build a fantasy world or alternate universe. Challenger does something different. It takes the competitive spirit of ranked play and turns it into a visual identity. Gold and dark tones dominate both skins. Heavy armor plating. Battle-scarred edges. The kind of look that says "I climbed through Platinum with blood on my keyboard."
The shared visual DNA between the two skins is tight. Both have that ornate golden armor with dark underlays. Crown-like headpieces. Weapon upgrades that look forged in the fires of a thousand lost promos. Kinda feels like Riot designed these for the players who hit Challenger and wanted something to show for it beyond a border.
Where it sits compared to other lines - think of it as the competitive cousin to Conqueror skins. Conqueror celebrates MSI, Victorious celebrates end-of-season ranked. Challenger sits in this middle ground where it's just... the grind personified. No lore. No alternate universe. Just pure competitive energy put into champion models.
The color palette works. Gold reads well on the Rift against that green-blue backdrop. Dark armor panels give contrast. In teamfights you can spot these skins. Played against a Challenger Nidalee last season in my Diamond promos and the spear visibility was actually decent. Not gonna say it gave her an advantage but the gold trail catches your eye in lane.
(Random aside: I always thought Riot should have made Challenger skins a yearly thing like Victorious. Missed opportunity.)
Best Challenger Skins to Lock In
With only two skins in the entire line, this section writes itself. But honestly both deliver for different reasons.
Challenger Nidalee dropped in 2015 and she wears the theme better than Ahri does. Fight me on this. The spear gets this golden treatment that looks clean in flight. Her cougar form has armored plating across the back and legs. Feels like a ranked predator. Been running this in my jungle games when I get autofilled and the cougar Q animation with that gold burst just hits different at 2 AM when you're trying to climb.
Challenger Ahri came a year later in 2016. She's good. Not great. The orb gets the golden treatment and her tails have this armored segmentation going on. Could be wrong here but I think the splash is stronger than the in-game model for this one. Splash looks like she's ready to 1v9 a Worlds final. In-game she's solid but the gold is slightly muted compared to Nidalee's version.
If I had to rank them: Nidalee takes it. The champion's silhouette in cougar form with armor just works naturally. Ahri has so many skins competing for attention that Challenger gets lost. My Ahri one-trick friend runs Spirit Blossom or KDA nine games out of ten. Challenger Ahri sits in his collection gathering dust.
For Nidalee mains specifically though? This is a top three skin for the champion. The pounce animation with gold particle trails in the jungle clear looks satisfying every single time. Spammed this in ranked for maybe 30 games last month when I was on a Nidalee kick.
Champion Roster and Who Should Join
Two champions. Nidalee and Ahri. That's the whole roster. Smallest skinline in the game alongside a few other micro-collections.
Nidalee fits perfectly. She's been a ranked staple since forever. High skill ceiling champion, dominant in the jungle when she's meta, the kind of pick that separates Diamond from Plat players. The Challenger identity was made for champions like her. When you see a Nidalee in your ranked game you already know they're either going to carry or int. No middle ground.
Ahri makes sense commercially. She sells skins. Period. But thematically? Maybe just my experience but I always associated Ahri more with the flashy pop-star fantasy than the gritty competitive grind. She fits but she doesn't fit perfectly. She's a mid lane staple in ranked, sure. But her champion fantasy leans more elegant than warrior.
Who should get a Challenger skin next? Not sure if it's just me but I'd kill for a Challenger Lee Sin. Hes the poster child for ranked mechanical expression. Challenger Thresh would be insane too. The hook with golden trails. Lantern in ranked gold. Flay particles. Come on Riot. A Challenger Vayne for the ADC mains who think they're carrying every game. The line has potential that Riot never explored and its kind of frustrating.
Two champions isn't enough to build a real skinline identity. It's more like a capsule collection. A proof of concept that never got a sequel.
Tier and Price Breakdown
Both skins sit at Standard tier. 975 RP each. No Legendaries. No Epics. No Mythics. Just two solid Standard skins that deliver above their price point.
Honestly? 975 RP for what you get here feels fair. You're getting new models, textures, and that gold armor treatment. No new voice lines. No new animations. Standard fare for 975 RP skins from that era. Back in 2015-2016 Riot was still putting out quality Standards before they shifted hard into the 1350 RP Epic tier as the baseline.
The line doesn't have the flashy Legendary that carries it. Both skins do their job at 975. For context thats cheaper than a single Epic skin today. You could buy both Challenger skins for less than one modern 1350 RP release. Wild when you think about it.
No chromas on either skin. What you see is what you get. Gold and dark armor. Could be coping but I think chromas would actually dilute the Challenger identity here. The gold IS the point. A green chroma Challenger skin defeats the purpose entirely.
For price-to-quality ratio in 2026? These are steals. 975 RP gets you a visual upgrade that reads clearly on the Rift and communicates "I take ranked seriously" without spending Legendary money. Played these skins into games where people complimented them in lobby chat. That doesn't happen with many Standard tier skins anymore.
(Sidebar: I wish Riot would bring back 975 RP as a regular price point. Everything being 1350+ now hurts the wallet for collectors trying to grab every skin for their main.)
Frequently Asked Questions
How many Challenger skins are there?
Two total. Challenger Nidalee from 2015 and Challenger Ahri from 2016. Smallest skinline in the game basically. Riot released one per year then just stopped. Been waiting for a third one since season 6 and at this point I dont think its coming.
What is the best Challenger skin?
Challenger Nidalee takes it for me. The armor fits her cougar form naturally and the gold spear trails look clean in jungle clears. Ahri's version is solid but gets overshadowed by her 15 other skins. Nidalee mains specifically should grab this one. Top three skin for the champion easy.
Which champions have Challenger skins?
Just Nidalee and Ahri. Two champions, two skins. Both high skill ceiling picks that show up in ranked constantly. The roster makes sense thematically but man its small. Would love to see Lee Sin or Thresh added someday. Probably never happening though.
Does Challenger have Legendary skins?
No Legendaries. Both skins are Standard tier at 975 RP. No new voice lines, no new animations beyond the model and texture work. Honestly a Legendary Challenger skin with ranked-themed voice lines would be incredible but Riot never went there. Missed potential.
When did the Challenger skinline release?
First skin was Challenger Nidalee in 2015. Challenger Ahri followed in 2016. Then nothing. Two years, two skins, line discontinued as far as anyone can tell. Came out during that era when Riot experimented with smaller thematic drops before committing to the big event model.
Are Challenger skins worth buying?
At 975 RP each? Yeah honestly they're worth it if you main either champion. The gold armor looks good on the Rift and you're paying less than a modern Epic. Nidalee's is the stronger buy. Ahri's competes with too many other options in her catalog. Fair price for what you get.
Do Challenger skins have chromas?
No chromas on either skin. The gold and dark armor is the whole identity. Might be overthinking it but chromas would kinda ruin the point here. The ranked gold color IS the Challenger fantasy. A blue variant would just make it look like a random armored skin with no identity.
Will Riot make more Challenger skins?
Doubt it at this point. Last release was 2016. Ten years of silence means the line is probably dead. Riot shifted to Conqueror and Victorious for their competitive-themed skins. Could see them reviving it for a ranked overhaul event but I'm not holding my breath. Would be cool though.
