Not gonna lie, Arctic Ops is one of those skinlines I keep forgetting exists until someone locks in Arctic Ops Varus in my ranked game at 1 AM and I go "oh right, that's a thing." The whole military-spec winter operations vibe hits a niche that Riot doesn't really revisit much. Cold blues, tactical gear, snow camo patterns. Six skins deep over eight years, from 2010 to 2018, and then Riot just... stopped. Kinda feels like they shelved the concept after running out of champions that fit the arctic soldier fantasy. Which is a shame because the line has some genuine standouts buried under a lot of "yeah that's a 750 RP skin from season 1" energy.

What Makes Arctic Ops Stand Apart

The visual identity here is pretty straightforward. Military winter gear. Think spec ops but make it Freljord. Heavy parkas, tactical goggles, white-and-blue camo, equipment straps everywhere. The color palette stays locked into ice blues, whites, steel grays, and the occasional orange accent for visibility. Clean stuff.

What ties the line together is the gear aesthetic more than any magical or fantasy element. Most LoL skinlines lean into some supernatural hook. Coven has dark witchcraft. Eclipse has celestial armor. Arctic Ops just says "what if this champion was a real soldier deployed to a frozen warzone." Grounded. Almost too grounded for League, honestly.

The splash arts across the line share that military briefing feel. Dark backgrounds, snow particles, dramatic lighting from below or from weapon glow. Older splashes like Northern Front Swain look dated now but the later ones, especially Varus and Gragas, brought the production quality up. Could be wrong here but I think the Gragas splash specifically is one of his best across all skins. The contrast between his usual beer-belly party vibe and this serious tactical operator look just works.

VFX-wise, the Epics (Gragas and Varus) get custom particles with ice-blue and white tones. The Standards dont change much beyond the model and texture. Fair enough for the price point. No new voice lines across any of them, which makes sense given the tier distribution. Four Standards and two Epics. Not exactly the lineup you'd expect Legendary treatment from.

Compared to similar cold-themed lines like Blackfrost or Freljord, Arctic Ops leans military where those lean magical. Blackfrost is corrupted ice power fantasy. Freljord is tribal lore. Arctic Ops is "soldier with a rifle in a blizzard." Different lane entirely. (Random aside: I always thought Arctic Ops would make a killer crossover with the PROJECT line. Tactical future soldier in the snow? Come on Riot.)

Best Arctic Ops Skins

Real talk though, this line peaks with Arctic Ops Varus. Released in 2018, its the newest in the set and it shows. The model is sharp. The bow gets a full tactical overhaul with what looks like a compound bow meets sniper rifle design. Blue energy particles on his Q charge feel satisfying in lane, and the arrow trails have that cold precision look. Been running this in my Varus poke games and the Q snipe across river at dragon pit last week felt extra clean with these VFX. At 1350 RP its priced as an Epic and earns it.

Arctic Ops Gragas is the other Epic and honestly might be the more fun pick. Something about tactical Gragas rolling a high-tech barrel bomb at your backline in a teamfight is inherently funny. The skin takes him from drunk brawler to demolitions expert and the contrast carries it hard. His ult explosion has this frost-tech detonation visual that reads well in chaotic fights. 1350 RP, same as Varus. Worth it if you play Gragas jungle or support.

Arctic Warfare Caitlyn is the classic pick. Old skin, 750 RP, but Caitlyn's base kit translates well to the military sniper fantasy because she literally is a sniper. The white camo outfit and tactical rifle reskin feel natural. Not sure if it's just me but this skin hits harder than some of her more expensive options because the thematic fit is so obvious. Played maybe 40 games with it back in season 6 when I was spamming ADC.

Northern Front Swain sits in a weird spot. It predates his rework so the current version looks decent but you can tell the concept was designed for old Swain. The military commander coat works for his general aesthetic though. 750 RP, does the job.

Arctic Ops Kennen is fine. Small model, hard to appreciate details. The snow ninja look is cute but Kennen has better options. Skip it unless you're collecting.

The Champion Roster

Six champions. Swain, Caitlyn, Gragas, Kennen, Volibear, Varus. Interesting mix when you actually look at it.

Caitlyn is the most natural fit. Sniper in winter camo. Writes itself. Swain as a military commander also makes sense thematically, he's literally Noxus high command in the lore. Varus with the tactical bow gives ADC mains something to work with. These three feel like they belong.

Gragas is the wildcard that somehow works. You wouldn't put "fat guy with barrel" on the spec ops team roster but the skin execution sells it. He's the demolitions specialist. Every squad needs one. Might be overthinking it but his inclusion actually makes the skinline feel more like a real military unit with different roles rather than just "slap winter camo on pretty champions."

Kennen and Volibear feel more like filler. Kennen's small model doesn't showcase the tactical gear well. Northern Storm Volibear (pre-rework name, still carries it) is just bear-in-snow. Not exactly high concept.

Who should get Arctic Ops next? Honestly if Riot ever revisits this line, Jhin is the obvious answer. Tactical sniper with the mask? The reload animations in winter gear? That ranked game where my duo locked in Jhin and I was on Varus, we talked about how both of them deserve the arctic treatment. Ashe is another natural fit but she already has too many cold skins. Maybe Graves with a winter shotgun loadout. Or Senna with a long-range arctic rifle. The marksman bias in this line is real and I think leaning into it would be the right call.

Tier and Pricing Breakdown

Four Standards at 750 RP each. Two Epics at 1350 RP each. Thats it. No Legendaries, no Mythics, no Prestige editions. The line is budget-friendly by default.

The Epics carry the line. Hard. Without Gragas and Varus this would be a forgettable batch of cheap recolors from early League. The Standards were fine for their era but in 2026 a 750 RP skin with no particle changes competes against way more polished options.

Total cost to collect all six is around 6,150 RP if my math is right. Thats less than some single Ultimate skins. For a complete skinline collection thats actually reasonable. Maybe just my experience but I grabbed most of these during legacy sales over the years without really planning to complete the set. Just happened. The Standards show up in My Shop rotations pretty often too.

Price range from 750 to 1350 means this is a mid-budget line. No premium offerings. If you're looking for value, Varus and Gragas at 1350 each give you the most for your RP. The four Standards are "sure why not" purchases during sales. Not the kind of skins you plan around buying.

Honestly the lack of a Legendary hurts the line's prestige. Every major skinline has at least one anchor Legendary that people associate with it. Coven has LeBlanc. High Noon has Lucian. Arctic Ops has... two Epics and four budget skins. Doesn't exactly command attention on the collection page.

Where Arctic Ops Fits in 2026

Been thinking about this for a while. Arctic Ops last got a skin in 2018. Thats eight years of nothing. The line isn't officially retired as far as I know but Riot clearly moved on. Season 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 - zero Arctic Ops releases.

The military aesthetic still has an audience. You see it in PROJECT, PsyOps, even some of the Omega Squad skins scratch a similar itch. But Arctic Ops specifically? Feels like it belongs to a different era of League design. Back when skins could just be "champion but in a cool outfit" without needing a whole narrative event behind them.

For collecting purposes, most of these are permanently available in the shop. Northern Front Swain and Arctic Warfare Caitlyn are old enough that they occasionally end up in Legacy rotation but I've seen them available in the regular store too. Not gonna lie, the rarity factor here is basically zero. Nobody in your ranked lobby is going to be impressed that you own Arctic Ops Kennen. (Sidebar for skin collectors: the real flex from this era is owning the full set including Volibear, because almost nobody picks that skin intentionally.)

If you main any of these six champions and want something with a clean military vibe, the Arctic Ops line delivers at a fair price point. Just dont expect the production value of modern skinlines. These are functional skins from a simpler time in League's cosmetic history. And sometimes that's exactly what you want. Lock in Arctic Ops Varus, hit your Qs in lane, feel like a sniper. Simple.

Arctic Ops FAQ

How many Arctic Ops skins are there?

Six total. Northern Front Swain, Arctic Warfare Caitlyn, Arctic Ops Gragas, Arctic Ops Kennen, Northern Storm Volibear, and Arctic Ops Varus. The line spans from 2010 to 2018 with no new additions since. Kinda feels like Riot forgot about it but the skins are still in the shop if you want them.

What is the best Arctic Ops skin?

Arctic Ops Varus. Newest in the line, best VFX, cleanest model. The 1350 RP Epic tier means custom particles on his abilities and the tactical bow design is sharp. Gragas is a close second because the concept is just fun. Been spamming Varus with this skin in ranked and it feels great for poke comps.

Which champions have Arctic Ops skins?

Swain, Caitlyn, Gragas, Kennen, Volibear, and Varus. Mixed roster. The marksmen and mages fit the military sniper vibe best. Gragas as demolitions expert is the wildcard that somehow works. Volibear and Kennen feel like filler picks if I'm being honest.

Does Arctic Ops have Legendary skins?

No Legendaries. The highest tier is Epic at 1350 RP, and only Gragas and Varus got that treatment. The other four are Standard tier at 750 RP each. Not gonna lie this is the line's biggest weakness. No anchor skin to build hype around.

When did the Arctic Ops skinline release?

First skin dropped in 2010 with Northern Front Swain. Last release was Arctic Ops Varus in 2018. Eight year run with six skins total, so roughly one skin every 16 months on average. Riot hasn't touched it since season 8 though.

Are Arctic Ops skins worth buying?

The two Epics are solid value. Varus and Gragas at 1350 RP each deliver custom particles and strong model work. The Standards are harder to recommend in 2026 since 750 RP skins from 2010-2015 compete against much newer options. Worth it for mains who like the military aesthetic, skip otherwise.

Do Arctic Ops skins have chromas?

Most of them don't. The older Standards released before chromas were even a thing in League. Some of the Epics may have picked up chromas over the years but this isnt a line known for chroma variety. Check the individual skin pages for current availability on those.

Will Riot make more Arctic Ops skins?

No announcements as of early 2026. Eight years without a new skin isn't a great sign. Could be wrong here but I think Riot views the military niche as covered by PsyOps and PROJECT now. Would love to see Jhin or Senna get an Arctic Ops skin but I'm not holding my breath on it.
