Smolder Skins

2 skins available

Smolder dropped into League in January 2024 and honestly the skin situation is still thin. Two skins total as of right now, both Epic tier. For a baby dragon champion who basically prints gold in late-game teamfights, you'd think Riot would have shipped more cosmetics by now. Not gonna lie, I've been spamming Smolder in ranked since his release and the base skin holds up fine, but having only two alternatives feels rough when you compare him to champions who launched with three or four day-one options. The collection is small. Real small. But there's still stuff worth talking about here.

How Smolder's Skin Catalog Looks Right Now

Two skins. Thats the whole list. Heavenscale Smolder came out alongside his champion release in early 2024, and Reindeer Smolder showed up later that same year during the holiday event cycle. Both sit at Epic tier which means 1350 RP each when they're available. No Legendary, no Ultimate, no Mythic. Just two Epics and the base skin.

For context, most champions who launched in season 14 got at least one release skin and then maybe a second within the year. Smolder follows that pattern exactly. Nothing unusual there. Could be wrong here but I think Riot's holding back on bigger skin investments until they see how his playrate stabilizes. He had that massive hotfix nerf cycle early on where they kept adjusting his Q stacking, and his ranked presence has bounced around a lot since then.

The year range is just 2024 to 2024. Everything in one calendar year. Compare that to someone like Lux or Ezreal who have skins spanning over a decade and it really puts things in perspective. Smolder mains are basically working with a starter pack right now.

Real talk though, having a small catalog isn't always bad. Means every skin gets more attention when you lock it in. People actually notice when a Smolder player is running Heavenscale versus base because there's only two options to choose from. In my Diamond games last split I could count on one hand the number of Smolder players I saw and maybe half of them ran a skin at all. The champion is still finding his audience.

Best Skins for Smolder

With only two skins this section is more of a head-to-head comparison than a proper tier list. But here's how I see it after playing both extensively.

Heavenscale Smolder is the release skin and honestly its the one I keep coming back to. The Heavenscale thematic fits a dragon champion so naturally it almost feels like it should have been his default look. The Q fireballs get this golden celestial treatment that reads really clean against the Rift background. His W zone has these flowing cloud patterns that I think look better than base, and the R execute beam turns into this massive golden dragon breath thing. Good stuff. (Random aside: the splash art for this one has been my desktop background since February 2024 and I still havent changed it.)

The recall animation on Heavenscale is where it really shines. Little dude does this whole ascending dragon ceremony thing. Played maybe 150 games with this skin between ranked and norms and the recall never got old which is saying something for a 1350 RP skin. The particle work on his passive stacks is also noticeably different. Each stack milestone feels more impactful visually. When you hit that 225 stack threshold and your Q starts doing the execute thing, the golden VFX make it feel earned.

Reindeer Smolder is the holiday option. Snowdown Showdown line. Cute concept for a baby dragon, putting him in a little reindeer outfit with antlers. The Q shoots these candy cane styled fireballs or something close to that. Kinda feels like it was made more for the novelty than for serious ranked play. Not that skins affect gameplay obviously but the vibe is different. More playful.

Been running Reindeer in ARAMs and normals since it dropped. Fun skin. The E flight leaves a trail of snowflakes which is a nice touch. But when I'm in a serious ranked session climbing through Diamond, I always switch back to Heavenscale. Just feels more fitting for tryhard mode. Might be overthinking it but the visual clarity on Heavenscale Q is slightly better in chaotic teamfights near dragon pit.

If I had to rank them: Heavenscale first, Reindeer second. Not exactly a controversial take when there's only two options but Heavenscale genuinely earns the top spot on visual quality alone.

Skinlines and Thematic Fit

Smolder sits in two skinlines right now. Heavenscale and Snowdown Showdown. Two very different vibes.

Heavenscale is the celestial dragon-themed line that Riot pushed hard in early 2024. The whole line included champions like Diana, Lee Sin, and Ezreal alongside Smolder. Makes perfect sense for a literal baby dragon to be in a dragon-themed skinline. Not sure if it's just me but Heavenscale Smolder feels like the most natural fit of any champion in that whole batch. He IS a dragon. The skinline is about dragons. Connection writes itself.

The Heavenscale aesthetic pulls from Lunar New Year and Eastern mythology which again just works for Smolder's existing design language. His base model already has that rounded cute dragon look. Heavenscale takes it and adds the gold and jade color palette. Clean execution. The other Heavenscale champions feel like they're cosplaying as dragons while Smolder just IS one. Different energy entirely.

Snowdown Showdown is League's annual holiday line. Been around since the early days of the game, season 1 or 2 I think. Tons of champions have Snowdown skins at this point. Reindeer Smolder fits the "cute holiday" slot that Riot always needs for newer champions. It works. Baby dragon in reindeer gear is an easy sell during December. But it doesnt define Smolder the way Heavenscale does.

(Sidebar for Smolder one-tricks specifically: if Riot ever puts him in a darker skinline like Dragonslayer or Dark Star, that could be incredible. A corrupted baby dragon? Take my RP.)

Budget vs Premium - What's Worth Your RP

This section is usually where I break down cheap versus expensive options. With Smolder the math is simple. Both skins are 1350 RP Epic tier. No budget 520 or 750 RP option exists. No Legendary at 1820. Your choices are base skin for free or 1350 for either of the two Epics.

Fair warning, Reindeer Smolder might not always be available since holiday skins sometimes rotate into the Legacy vault after their event window. Heavenscale should be permanent shop. So if you want guaranteed access to a Smolder skin any time of year, Heavenscale is your pick by default.

For 1350 RP Heavenscale Smolder punches at exactly its weight class. New particles on all abilities, new recall, new SFX. Standard Epic package. Voice lines stay base which is normal for this tier. No new VO. You get what you pay for. Nothing more nothing less.

My recommendation for Smolder mains on a budget: honestly just run base skin until a Legendary drops. The base model is good enough. But if you're spending RP regardless, Heavenscale is the move. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. Played a bunch of games last Tuesday around midnight switching between all three options and the base-to-Heavenscale jump is noticeable while base-to-Reindeer is more of a lateral move in terms of visual quality.

Straight talk: Smolder needs a Legendary skin. The champion's kit with the stacking passive and the scaling Q mechanic is begging for a skin that gets custom voice lines reacting to stack milestones. "225 stacks? About time" type energy. Riot is probably cooking something but until then, Epic tier is all we've got.

What Makes Smolder Worth Investing In

Been maining Smolder on and off since season 14 started. The champion has a unique identity in bot lane as this scaling ADC who plays weak early but becomes an absolute monster post-25 minutes. His Q stacking mechanic rewards patience and consistent play. Good Smolder players in Diamond and above know how to farm safely pre-6, avoid bad trades, and then take over teamfights once the stacks come online.

Not gonna lie, the champion design is what sells skins here more than the skins themselves. People see a cute baby dragon breathing fire in the bot lane and they want to play him. The personality carries. His voice lines about being a big dragon someday, the little waddle walk animation, the way he sneezes fire during his E. All of it creates attachment.

The gameplay loop of stacking Q and watching your damage scale through the game is addictive. Had a ranked game last week where my support was flaming me at 15 minutes because I was 0/2 with 80 cs. By 30 minutes I had 200+ stacks and was melting their backline in every teamfight. That kind of turnaround potential keeps people locked in on Smolder and when people are locked in on a champion they buy skins. Simple as that.

For a champion released in January 2024, two skins in the first year is standard pace. Expect Riot to drop at least one more in 2025, probably targeting a major skinline. Could see Smolder in something like Porcelain, Immortal Journey, or even a Battle Boss type line. The cute dragon fantasy has a lot of directions it can go and Riot knows this champion sells well with the casual audience.

Keep coming back to this champion every few patches. Even when the meta shifts away from scaling ADCs, Smolder finds a way to be relevant because his late-game is just that strong. Lock in Smolder with a peel support like Janna or Lulu, survive lane phase, and you win teamfights by default once you hit your stack thresholds. The skin you wear while doing it is secondary but having options is nice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many skins does Smolder have?

Two skins total right now. Heavenscale Smolder and Reindeer Smolder, both Epic tier at 1350 RP. Pretty slim catalog for a champion who's been out over a year but that's normal for newer releases. Base skin is solid enough to hold you over until Riot ships more options. Expect the collection to grow in 2025.

What is the best Smolder skin?

Heavenscale Smolder. Not even close. The golden dragon VFX on every ability look incredible on the Rift and the recall animation is one of the better ones at 1350 RP. Been my go-to Smolder skin since day one. Reindeer is fun for holiday games but Heavenscale is the serious pick for ranked.

What is the cheapest Smolder skin?

Both skins cost 1350 RP so there's no budget option. Cheapest way to get a Smolder skin is through Hextech crafting if you're lucky enough to roll one from a chest. Otherwise you're spending 1350 regardless of which one you pick. No 520 or 750 RP alternatives exist yet.

Does Smolder have a Legendary skin?

Nope. No Legendary, no Ultimate, nothing above Epic tier. Both his skins sit at 1350 RP. Honestly think a Legendary with custom voice lines reacting to Q stack milestones would be perfect for this champion. Riot's probably planning one but nothing announced as of now. Just gotta wait.

What skinlines is Smolder in?

Two skinlines. Heavenscale which dropped with his champion release in early 2024 and Snowdown Showdown for the holiday Reindeer skin. Heavenscale fits him perfectly since hes literally a dragon in a dragon-themed line. Snowdown is more of a cute seasonal thing. Both work but Heavenscale is the stronger thematic match.

Does Smolder have chromas?

Heavenscale Smolder has chromas available. Gives you some color variety beyond the default gold and jade palette. If you want to personalize the look a bit thats your best bet. Reindeer Smolder may also have chromas depending on the holiday event bundle. Check the shop during Snowdown for the full set.

When was Smolder's last skin released?

Reindeer Smolder dropped during the 2024 Snowdown Showdown event, late in the year. So his most recent skin is from December 2024 area. Before that was Heavenscale which launched alongside the champion in January 2024. Both skins came out within the same calendar year. Due for something new soon I think.

Is Smolder worth buying skins for?

If you main him or plan to, yes. Heavenscale alone justifies the 1350 RP investment. The champion has a fun kit with the scaling Q stacks and late-game teamfight potential that keeps you coming back game after game. Spammed him through Diamond last season and never got bored. Worth the RP if you're committed to learning him.
