How to Download League of Legends PBE (2026)

The League of Legends PBE download runs through the Riot Client now. No standalone installer, no separate download page. They stopped doing the separate client thing back in like 2022 or 2023, I don’t remember exactly when. Point is, if the Riot Client is already on your computer, you don’t need to download anything else to get started.

I had to redo my PBE setup last week after a password reset broke my old account. Five minutes for the account, 20 minutes for the 10 GB download (I’m on 100mbps fiber). Slower internet = longer wait, obviously. Everything I ran into during the process is written up below, errors included.

What Is the League of Legends PBE?

PBE = Public Beta Environment. Riot’s test server. Every patch goes through PBE before it hits the live game. New champions land here first, usually two to three weeks before the actual release date. Same with reworked abilities, item changes, new TFT sets, skin lines, all of it.

None of this stuff is polished though. I loaded into a PBE game once where a brand new champion’s W ability just… did nothing. No animation, no damage, nothing. I reported it, Riot patched it the next day. Bugs like that are just part of the PBE experience. Riot patches the server almost every weekday and sometimes the patch breaks more stuff than it fixes. Monday’s version of a champion might play completely differently by Wednesday.

The PBE server sits in NA. This is a problem if you live anywhere else. I’m talking 150 to 200+ ms for European players. You can still test new kits and check out upcoming skins, but hitting skill shots at that ping? Good luck with that. PBE is a test server, not your ranked grind server.

Back in the day, Riot was selective about who got PBE access. They invited specific people. That whole system is gone now. Any Riot account holder can make a PBE account. Honestly the quality of testing probably went up once they opened the floodgates because more players means more edge cases getting found.

League of Legends PBE Account Requirements (2026)

First thing: you can’t download League of Legends PBE without a PBE account. Two separate things. Account comes first. Takes two minutes.

There’s a ton of outdated info floating around about this. Guides from 2024 and even early 2025 still say Honor Level 2 or 3 is required. I went and checked Riot’s own PBE FAQ to settle it. Direct quote from their page: “There are none! Anybody can make a PBE account.” The honor requirement is dead. Not sure when exactly Riot removed it, but it’s gone.

The only real requirement: your Riot account can’t have active punishments. Meaning:

• No bans (temporary or permanent) on your main
• No chat restrictions active right now
• No suspensions pending

Region doesn’t matter. You can be on EUW, EUNE, NA, KR, whatever. The signup works regardless. If your account has a restriction though, the signup page blocks you. Nothing you can do except wait it out.

One thing to know: PBE and your main account are linked. A ban on one triggers a ban on both. There was a post on r/leagueoflegends about someone who inted on PBE and lost their main account over it. Two accounts, one punishment system.

How to Download League of Legends PBE (4 Steps)

The League of Legends PBE download happens through your regular Riot Client. No website download, no third-party tool. I kept looking for a separate download link when I first tried this and wasted ten minutes before realizing it’s all built into the same client.

Step 1: Create a PBE Account

Head over to the official PBE signup page. Sign in with your normal Riot login. Hit the “Check my Eligibility” button. Assuming your account is clean, the page will let you create a PBE username and password. These are NOT the same as your main account credentials. They’re separate. I cannot stress this enough because it’s the #1 thing people get confused about later. Write the password down or stick it in a password manager right away.

Step 2: Log Into the Riot Client With PBE Credentials

Open the Riot Client on your PC or Mac. If you’re currently signed into your regular account, log out. Then sign back in using the username and password you just created for PBE. Not your main account. The PBE one. If you accidentally log in with your regular credentials, PBE won’t show up in the next step and you’ll think something is broken. Seen this question on Reddit at least a hundred times.

Step 3: Select League of Legends PBE in the Dropdown

With PBE credentials logged in, click League of Legends in the client. Next to the Play button there’s a tiny down arrow. Easy to miss if nobody tells you it exists. Click the arrow, a dropdown opens, pick “League of Legends PBE.”

Step 4: Let the League of Legends PBE Download Run

Around 10 GB of files start pulling down. Mine finished in 20 minutes on fiber. On a slower connection, probably closer to an hour. Leave the client open, don’t close it mid-download. When the progress bar fills up, hit Play.

What You Get After You Download League of Legends PBE

Depends on why you’re here. Some players want a competitive edge. Others just want to look at new skins. Both are valid.

Early champion access. New champs land on PBE about two to three weeks ahead of their live release. I was messing around with the last new champion on PBE for a solid three days before they dropped on live servers. By the time everyone else was reading the ability descriptions, I already knew the combo timing, the power spikes, the matchups that feel bad. Champion reworks also show up on PBE first. If your one-trick is getting a major overhaul, PBE is where you go to figure out if they’re still worth playing.

Free skins to try. Riot gives PBE accounts 3,000 RP every day through a daily mission. Enough to buy any skin. I tested the Dark Star Thresh Legendary on PBE once before buying it on live. Looked great in the spotlight video but the auto attack animation felt off in actual gameplay, so I skipped it. Wouldn’t have known without trying it on PBE. The RP doesn’t transfer to your live account, so spend all of it.

Upcoming balance changes. If you play ranked, pay attention to this. I swapped off Ahri mid before patch 26.03 dropped because PBE showed the nerfs were brutal. The patch notes made it look like a small Q damage reduction but in game she felt completely different. Gave me a full week to learn a backup pick before the nerf hit live.

TFT set previews. New Teamfight Tactics sets always go to PBE first. People who grind TFT on PBE during the preview period hit the ground running when the set goes live on ranked. They already know which comps are broken and which units are bait. It’s an open secret at this point that PBE TFT practice translates directly into early LP.

Bug reporting. There’s a report button in the bottom right of the client and there’s also the PBE Subreddit. Both work. Riot devs actually check the subreddit. I posted a bug with detailed repro steps once and a Rioter commented within four hours asking for my match ID.

League of Legends PBE Maintenance and Queue Times

PBE goes down every weekday for maintenance. Officially it’s 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM Pacific. In practice? I’ve seen it start at 11 and not come back until 1:30. The Riot Client just says “Unavailable” during this time with no ETA. First time this happened I spent 15 minutes googling whether my PBE install was broken. It wasn’t. Just Riot doing their daily server thing.

Login queues are another thing entirely. Whenever something big drops on PBE (new champ, TFT set, pre-season update), the server gets slammed. I waited 25 minutes in a login queue the day the latest TFT set dropped. If you want to avoid that, log in early in the morning PT. Way fewer people on at that hour.

How to Fix League of Legends PBE Download Problems

I dug through a bunch of Reddit threads and Riot support posts to see what people run into most. These issues show up over and over again in r/leagueoflegends and r/LeaguePBE.

“Account not eligible” on the signup page. Almost always means your main account has an active ban or restriction. The “anyone can join” policy only applies to accounts without punishments. No way around this except waiting for your restriction to end.

PBE doesn’t appear in the client dropdown. This one gets posted on Reddit multiple times per week. The answer is always the same: you logged in with your normal account instead of your PBE account. Sign out. Sign in with PBE credentials. Done.

Download gets stuck partway through. Close the Riot Client, reopen it. It’ll continue where it left off. If it freezes a second time, check your antivirus. I wasted like 20 minutes staring at a frozen progress bar before figuring out that Windows Defender was silently blocking the Riot patcher. Turned Defender off for five minutes, download finished, turned it back on. Also worth checking if someone else on your wifi is streaming or downloading something heavy. And if you have ethernet problems with League already, those will carry over to PBE too.

Riot Client crashes while installing PBE. On Windows: right-click the Riot Client shortcut, hit “Run as administrator.” This was the fix on my end, Windows 11, worked on the first try after crashing three times in a row without admin. Mac: check System Settings > Privacy & Security, the client might not have the permissions it needs.

200+ ping on PBE. Normal if you’re not in North America. PBE has one server and it’s in the US. Ethernet instead of wifi helps. Closing background apps helps. Playing during NA off-hours helps. But you’re never going to get the same ping you have on your local live server.

Login queue that doesn’t seem to move. Common on content drop days. The queue IS moving, it’s just slow because the server is at capacity. Give it time. First day is always the worst. By day two or three the hype dies down and you can log in normally.

“Something went wrong” when selecting PBE in the client. Probably corrupted game files. Open Riot Client settings, find the PBE install listed under Game Installs, and hit Repair. Takes a few minutes to verify and redownload broken files.

Playing Ranked on League of Legends PBE

Ranked queue exists on PBE. The games are wild though.

Player pool is tiny. I queued ranked last month and got matched with two Diamond players, one Gold, and two people first-timing a new champion. One guy locked in the unreleased champ and didn’t even know what the passive did yet. Lanes were over by minute three. Matchmaking tries but there just aren’t enough people on PBE to make fair games consistently.

Your PBE rank has nothing to do with your live account. Separate ladder, separate MMR. Most people queue PBE ranked to see how balance changes feel under pressure. Useful for meta scouting. Bad if you care about competitive match quality.

Uninstalling League of Legends PBE

Windows: Settings > Apps > Apps & features, find League of Legends PBE, click uninstall. Mine didn’t show up there the first time I tried, no idea why. If that happens, go into the Riot Client settings instead, look under Game Installs, and delete PBE from there.

Mac: Finder > Applications. Grab the League of Legends PBE folder, drag to Trash, empty Trash.

Your PBE account survives the uninstall. So does your normal League install. They’re separate. Come back anytime, log in with PBE creds, redownload through the Riot Client.

League of Legends PBE Tips

Stuff I picked up from using PBE on and off since 2024:

Open the client every day if you’re actively testing. Riot pushes patches almost every weekday. I skipped a week once and came back to a 3 GB update queue. Keeping it current means smaller daily patches instead of one massive one.

Do the 3,000 RP daily mission. It completes after a single game. ARAM works. Takes 15 minutes. Then you have enough RP to buy whatever new skin or champion you want to test that day.

Read the PBE Subreddit before your first game of the day. People post known bugs, newly deployed content, and patch summaries there. Saves you from writing up a bug report for something that was already reported six hours ago.

Use Practice Tool when queues are dead. Late night PBE (NA time) can mean 10+ minute queue times because nobody is online. Practice Tool loads instantly and you can test abilities, items, and skin animations solo.
