Dota 2 November Patch: MK + Ability Draft Rework

Updated November 6, 2026
Valve shipped a November Dota 2 patch that expands Monkey King’s transformation options, substantially reworks Ability Draft with scepter/shard abilities granted alongside base abilities, and removes support for 32-bit systems and legacy DirectX 9 — moving Dota 2’s technical base forward while bulking out one of its most-loved alternate modes. Three technical removals happen simultaneously: 32-bit system support dropped, native XAudio replaced by SDL, DirectX 9 deprecated (users switched to DX11 with a `-deprecated_dx9` fallback flag for reporting issues). This page covers every verified change from the patch. Verified on 6 November 2026.

Monkey King — expanded transformations
Valve added two capabilities to Monkey King’s Transform ability:
- Lane and neutral creep transforms. Monkey King can now transform into nearby lane creeps and neutral creeps (in addition to prior transform options).
- Transform healthbar visible. Transforming into a courier, Roshan, or creeps now shows a healthbar on the transformed unit — making ambush gameplay more readable for Monkey King players.
- Bug fix. Fixed a rare bug where Monkey King transformed into an invisible model.
The changes expand Monkey King’s deception toolkit — more creature options to disguise as, plus clearer visual feedback when a transform is active.
Ability Draft — major reworks
Ability Draft is Dota 2’s mode where players draft abilities from different heroes. Valve added several integration improvements:
- Mischief for Wukong’s Command. Drafting Wukong’s Command grants Mischief, but only Monkey King can turn into trees (Mischief’s tree-transform is MK-exclusive).
- Call of the Wild default. Now defaults to Hawk. Boar is available by toggling auto-cast.
- Scepter/Shard abilities grouped with base abilities. Several scepter/shard upgrade abilities are now granted alongside the base ability, accessed by toggling auto-cast on the base spell. Specific pairings:
- Tree Volley with Tree Grab
- Torrent Storm with Torrent
- Terror Wave with Metamorphosis
- Death Seeker with Death Pulse
- Cold Blooded with Mystic Snake (its passive is hidden)
- Hairball with Quill Spray (Goo in Hairball requires Nasal Goo)
- Player slot shuffle. Shuffling player slots is a new lobby option, works on hosted servers, and is on by default.
- Talent bug fixes. Winter Wyvern and Wind Ranger talent bugs fixed.
These changes substantially rebalance what’s draftable and how combo picks work — a notable iteration for Ability Draft regulars.
32-bit systems support removed
Valve’s technical note: “Removed support for Dota on 32-bit systems.” Valve had announced this plan earlier, and the November patch implemented it.
Practical impact:
- Players on 32-bit Windows installs can no longer launch Dota 2.
- 64-bit systems are now the minimum. Nearly all Windows installations since 2015 are 64-bit.
- If your Windows is 32-bit, you need to reinstall 64-bit Windows to continue playing.
To check: on Windows, open Settings → System → About — System type shows “64-bit operating system” or “32-bit operating system.”
Audio system switched to SDL
Valve removed native XAudio support and made SDL the default audio system. Rationale: SDL offers better cross-platform audio consistency between Windows, macOS, and Linux — reducing audio-engine code duplication.
Practical impact:
- Most players won’t notice any audio-quality difference.
- Specific audio bugs tied to XAudio implementations are resolved by the SDL switch.
- Audio latency and spatial-sound behavior may differ slightly on some systems.
DirectX 9 deprecated
Valve’s note: DirectX 9 is deprecated. Users were switched to DirectX 11. A temporary `-deprecated_dx9` launch option exists for reporting DX9-specific issues.
Practical impact:
- Most players already run on DX11 — no change.
- Players with very old GPUs (2008-2011 era) that only support DX9 can’t continue.
- If a specific visual bug appears after the DX11 switch, players can add `-deprecated_dx9` to launch options to report the issue to Valve.
- OpenGL support on Windows was removed. OpenGL deprecation on macOS and Linux is coming in a separate update.
Combined technical floor
After the November patch, Dota 2’s minimum tech requirements lift:
| Requirement | Before patch | After patch |
|---|---|---|
| OS architecture | 32-bit or 64-bit | 64-bit only |
| Graphics API | DX9 / DX11 / OpenGL | DX11 (DX9 deprecated, OpenGL removed on Windows) |
| Audio engine | XAudio or SDL | SDL only |
The cumulative effect: Dota 2 runs leaner on supported hardware and more consistently across platforms, at the cost of blocking some very-old PCs.
What this patch does NOT change
Four categories unchanged by the November patch:
- Standard hero balance. No major hero stat buffs/nerfs this patch beyond the Winter Wyvern and Wind Ranger talent bug fixes.
- Item changes. No new items or item balance adjustments.
- Map changes. No map geometry or structure changes.
- Normal-mode rules. Standard Dota 2 matchmaking, draft, and ranked mechanics unchanged.
The patch is specifically Monkey King + Ability Draft + tech-floor — focused rather than broad.
FAQ
What changed for Monkey King in the November patch?
Monkey King can now transform into nearby lane and neutral creeps (previously limited to other transform options). Transforms into couriers, Roshan, or creeps now show a healthbar. A rare invisible-model bug was also fixed.
What is the biggest Ability Draft change?
Scepter/shard abilities are now granted alongside base abilities, accessed via auto-cast on the base spell. Six specific pairings: Tree Volley/Tree Grab, Torrent Storm/Torrent, Terror Wave/Metamorphosis, Death Seeker/Death Pulse, Cold Blooded/Mystic Snake, Hairball/Quill Spray.
Why did Valve drop 32-bit support?
Nearly all Windows installations since 2015 are 64-bit. Supporting 32-bit added maintenance cost for a tiny audience. Dropping it lets Dota 2’s engine use 64-bit-only optimizations consistently.
What happened to DirectX 9?
DX9 is deprecated. Users were automatically switched to DX11. A temporary `-deprecated_dx9` launch flag exists for reporting DX9-specific issues. OpenGL support on Windows was also removed.
Is this patch a major balance patch?
No. Beyond Winter Wyvern and Wind Ranger talent bug fixes, no hero balance changes shipped. The patch’s focus is Monkey King Transform, Ability Draft reworks, and the tech-floor lift.
Can I still play Dota 2 on an old 32-bit PC?
Not after this patch. 64-bit Windows is now the minimum. If your PC runs 32-bit Windows, you need a 64-bit Windows reinstall to continue.
What is the `-deprecated_dx9` launch option for?
Valve kept a temporary DX9 fallback flag for players to report DX9-specific bugs after the DX11 switch. It’s not a long-term supported mode — expected to be removed in a future patch once DX11 is stable for everyone.
