First time I saw Hextech Amumu pop up in the crafting tab I think it was around 2 AM on a weeknight. Season 9 was winding down and I had just enough gemstones saved up from event passes. Honestly not gonna lie, the splash alone sold me before I even checked the in-game model. Something about turning the saddest yordle on the Rift into a crystalline clockwork construct just works.
The Hextech treatment on Amumu
So what actually changes here. The whole model gets rebuilt from the ground up in that signature Hextech style: brass plating, glowing blue-green energy cores, and those translucent crystal segments that catch light during abilities. Amumu’s bandages become energy tethers. Clean look.
The VFX are where this Mythic tier skin earns its keep. Tantrum (E) sends out these hexagonal shockwave patterns instead of the base ground slam. His Q, Bandage Toss, fires a crystalline energy line that reads differently enough in lane to feel fresh after hundreds of games. The W aura trades that green sadness cloud for a pulsing blue-gold field. Kinda feels like youre standing in a Hextech generator. Curse of the Sad Mummy (R) is the highlight though. The stun wave ripples out with intricate gear-shaped particle effects and the freeze moment has this satisfying mechanical lock animation.
New recall too. Amumu interacts with a Hextech device, the whole thing plays into the lonely-robot vibe they were going for. Voice lines stay base, no VO refresh, which I get for a Mythic but still would have been nice to hear some robotic filter on his crying.
Not sure if it’s just me but the auto attack animations feel snappier with this skin. Could be placebo. Been running this in my Diamond games for a while now and the ability readability is solid. Teammates dont confuse your R hitbox, which matters when you’re the engage tool in a teamfight comp.
Release and the Hextech collection
Hextech Amumu dropped September 26, 2019. Late into season 9. David Villegas and West Studio handled the artwork, and they nailed the contrast between Amumu’s small frame and the heavy Hextech machinery wrapping around him.
The Hextech skinline is one of Riot’s prestige crafting lines. Hextech Anivia, Hextech Renekton, Hextech Swain, they all share that brass-and-crystal DNA. Amumu fits the theme naturally because his bandage fantasy translates perfectly into energy tether visuals. Among the Hextech skins I’ve seen in ranked, this one shows up rarely. Maybe 4 or 5 times all of last season in my games. (Random aside: the loading screen border you get with Mythic skins genuinely makes this feel more exclusive than half the Prestige editions.)
No chromas on this one. Mythic skins typically skip the chroma treatment which makes sense since the whole point is exclusivity. The Hextech color palette is locked in: blue, gold, brass. It reads well against every map skin Riot has cycled through.
Availability is through Mythic Essence crafting. You’re not finding this in the regular shop. Need to save up ME from events or get extremely lucky with rerolls. That’s the real price tag here, not RP but time and grinding.
Playing Hextech Amumu in ranked
Took this into ranked for about 30 games last month specifically in the jungle. Amumu’s clear is already solid post-6 and the Hextech VFX actually help you track your W toggle better than base. Small thing but when you’re managing mana in early jungle clear it matters.
Ganking with this skin feels good. The Q bandage toss has a distinct visual that botlane players react to differently. Could be wrong here but I swear the energy tether looks faster even though the hitbox is identical. Had a game last Tuesday where I flash-ulted three people at dragon pit and my Kayn typed “that R animation is sick” in chat. The little things.
Real talk though, Amumu mains already know the champion carries games from Gold through Diamond. The skin doesnt change that but it makes the experience feel premium. Spammed this in Diamond for two weeks straight and never got bored of the recall animation.
Should you craft Hextech Amumu?
Verdict time. This is a Mythic skin that actually delivers on the crafting investment. The VFX overhaul is thorough, the model is distinct from every other Amumu skin, and the Hextech line ages well visually. Surprise Party Amumu is the meme pick. Sad Robot is the fan favorite. But Hextech Amumu is the flex.
If you main Amumu jungle and you’ve got the Mythic Essence sitting there, this is worth the craft. Top pick for Amumu mains who want something rare in the loading screen. The lack of new voice lines keeps it from being perfect, and I think a voice filter would have pushed it into S-tier territory. But for what it is: custom model, full VFX, unique recall, and genuine rarity in your games. Hard to argue against spending the ME. Skip it only if you’re saving for a Prestige you actually want more. Otherwise lock it in.
