Space Groove Lux

Not gonna lie, when Space Groove Lux dropped I wasnt expecting much. Lux already has a ridiculous skin catalog and I figured this would just blend in. Played maybe 40 games with it that first week in Diamond and it stuck around in my rotation way longer than I thought it would. The disco aesthetic just works on her kit in a way that feels natural, not forced.

What the skin actually changes on Lux

The VFX carry this skin hard. Her Q snare comes out with this groovy trail of light particles, pinks and purples swirling like a lava lamp. Hits different in lane when you’re poking through minion waves. The W shield has these funky concentric rings that pulse outward, and honestly it makes the hitbox read cleaner than base Lux which is a gameplay win on top of looking good.

E is where it gets interesting. The zone drops down with this retro dance floor effect, and the detonation sends out sparkles that remind me of a disco ball shattering. Been running this in ranked since season 11 and the E still catches my eye every time. Her ult fires this massive rainbow beam that cuts across the Rift. Big teamfight moments where you hit a three or four person ult look spectacular with the Space Groove VFX.

The recall animation is peak. Lux busts out dance moves on a little platform. Short and sweet. (Random aside: my duo partner who mains ADC says the recall animation tilts him because I always use it after landing a Q pick in bot lane.) Voice lines stay base, no new VO, which is standard for a 1350 RP Epic. The model itself gives Lux this bell-bottom outfit with platform boots and a headband. Very 70s space disco. Clean design.

Space Groove, release date, and the splash

Space Groove Lux released April 1, 2021. Felt like an April Fools skin at first glance but Riot was dead serious about the line. The Space Groove skinline is one of those thematic gambles that paid off. Nami, Blitzcrank, Lulu all got skins in the same universe and they share this consistent retro-futuristic vibe.

Svetlana Tigai and West Studio handled the artwork. They nailed the splash, the colors pop without looking oversaturated and Lux’s pose has this confident energy. Could be wrong here but I think this is one of the better composed Lux splashes outside of the Legendary tier ones.

9 chromas total. Obsidian is my personal pick, the dark base with neon accents gives off a midnight rave look that reads well against Summoner’s Rift. Disco chroma leans into the theme even harder with teal and purple tones. Rainbow is fun but kinda noisy in actual gameplay, hard to focus on cs when your character model looks like a pride float. Still in the shop at 1350 RP, permanent availability.

Should you pick up Space Groove Lux?

Real verdict: this is a solid mid-tier option in what might be the most crowded skin lineup in League. Lux mains have Elementalist, Dark Cosmic, Star Guardian all competing for the top spot. Space Groove doesnt dethrone any of those but it fills a niche none of them cover. If you want something colorful and playful without the serious fantasy angle, this is the one.

1350 RP feels fair for what you get. New VFX on every ability, a fun recall, strong model design. Kinda feels like Riot found the sweet spot between effort and price on this particular skin. Last Tuesday I locked in Space Groove Lux three games in a row in Diamond and got compliments in all chat twice, which almost never happens pre-6 let alone at all. That says something about the visual impact.

Skip it if you already own Dark Cosmic or Elementalist and only play Lux occasionally. But for Lux mains who want variety in their rotation, this skin earns its slot. Top pick for anyone who vibes with the retro space aesthetic. Worth 1350 RP if you main Lux, no question.
