First time I saw Charred Maokai load into a game I thought someone modded their client. This was back in early 2011, season one vibes, and seeing a burning tree walk into lane felt genuinely unsettling. Played maybe 40 games of Maokai that month just because of how different the model looked compared to base. Not gonna lie, the skin still holds up in a weird retro way even though Riot’s standards have changed completely since then.
What the skin actually does to Maokai
Charred Maokai turns the Twisted Treant into a scorched husk. The bark is blackened and cracked with embers glowing through the fissures. His branches look like they’ve been through a forest fire and somehow kept walking. The color palette shifts from green and brown to deep charcoal with orange-red highlights. Solid reimagining.
For a 975 RP Standard tier skin from 2011, theres actually updated VFX here. The saplings from E come out looking singed and the Q ground slam has a subtle heat distortion to it. Nothing dramatic like what you’d see on a Legendary, but enough that you notice mid-teamfight. Been running this in Diamond ranked games last season and the visual clarity on his W root is slightly different from base, which I think actually helps readability for your team.
Voice lines stay base. Same old Maokai voice, no filter, no new lines. Jay Preston’s delivery works fine for the concept though. The angry tree energy translates whether he’s green or on fire. No new recall animation either, this predates the era where Riot started adding those to everything. You press B, Maokai channels, thats it.
The model reads clean on Summoner’s Rift. Specifically in the bot lane river area around dragon pit, the orange glow contrasts well against the blue-tinted terrain. Played a game last Thursday where I ulted in dragon pit and the Charred model blended perfectly with the Infernal Drake VFX. Small thing but it felt right.
The Infernal line and where Charred fits
Charred Maokai is part of the Infernal skinline, which Riot has expanded massively over the years. Back when this dropped February 16, 2011, the Infernal concept wasnt even a fully realized thematic yet. Maokai was one of the early entries. Mist XG handled the artwork, and honestly the splash holds a certain charm. Not their most technically impressive piece but the composition tells you exactly what the skin is about.
975 RP puts this in Standard territory. Shop has it permanently, no vault nonsense, no loot-only exclusivity. Could be wrong here but I think this might be one of the better value propositions in Maokai’s catalog purely because the VFX updates give it more personality than you’d expect at this price point. (Random aside: I keep this and Totemic in my rotation and swap depending on mood.)
No chromas available. Zero. For a skin from season one thats expected. Riot wasn’t doing chromas until years later and they’ve never gone back to add them here.
Should you pick up Charred Maokai?
Real verdict: if you’re a Maokai main looking for something that changes the vibe without spending 1820 RP on a Legendary, Charred delivers. The burning tree fantasy is well executed for its era. I think the VFX updates carry it past what most 975 skins from 2011 offer. Kinda feels like Riot gave this one a little extra attention because the concept was strong.
Worth 975 if you main Maokai. The Infernal theme reads clearly in teamfights, the embers on the model pop during jungle clear, and the saplings looking scorched is a nice touch when you’re poking with E in lane. Been maining Maokai with this skin off and on since season 3 I think or maybe 4 dont remember exactly. Skip it if you already have Meowkai or Astronaut since those are more modern, but for the price Charred Maokai earns its spot. S-tier Maokai cosmetic for budget-conscious one-tricks who want their tree angry and on fire.
