First time I saw Scorched Earth Xerath load in, I thought someone modded the game. Xerath goes from this arcane energy being to a walking volcanic eruption and the shift hits hard. Been running this skin on and off since maybe season 4 or 5, dont remember exactly, but it stays in my rotation for a reason. The Infernal treatment fits Xerath better than most champions in the line.
What the skin actually changes
The big draw here is the VFX overhaul. Every ability gets the lava and magma treatment. His Q charges up with this molten orange energy that looks way more threatening than base Xerath’s blue bolts. Feels like you’re channeling actual geological destruction down lane. The W ground effect leaves cracked earth with embers, which is a nice touch when you’re zoning in teamfights.
His E stun projectile trails fire. Clean animation, easy to track. Not gonna lie, I think the E actually reads better on this skin than default because the orange contrasts against Summoner’s Rift greens. Played maybe 150 games with this skin last season in Diamond and the visual clarity never caused issues.
The R is where Scorched Earth Xerath really earns it. Each ult shot rains down like a meteor strike with lava splash effects. Last Tuesday I was sniping a retreating Jinx from mid and my duo said the kill looked cinematic. The barrage feels heavier, more impactful. You know what surprised me? The passive proc animation. When you auto attack to restore mana, there’s this subtle magma pulse that base Xerath completely lacks.
Voice lines stay base, which is fine for an Epic tier skin from 2012. Michael McConnohie’s original VO still works. The model swap turns Xerath into this cracked obsidian figure with magma flowing through the fissures. Kinda feels like they took the Infernal concept and pushed it toward “ancient fire elemental” rather than generic flame demon. Good call.
The Infernal line and where this fits
Scorched Earth Xerath dropped July 13, 2012. That’s early League. Season 2 era. The Infernal skinline has grown massive since then with entries for Diana, Nasus, Shen, and a bunch of others. Xerath’s version predates most of them and honestly holds up surprisingly well for its age.
Could be wrong here but I think this was one of the first skins to really commit to a full VFX swap at the 1350 RP tier. Back in 2012 that price point wasnt as standardized as it is now. No new recall animation, which tracks for the era. Riot wasn’t doing custom recalls on every Epic back then.
(Random aside: the splash art on this one has been my desktop wallpaper rotation for years. The cracked earth spreading from Xerath’s feet with that orange glow is just peak fantasy art.)
Shop has it. Permanent availability, 1350 RP. No chromas exist for this skin which is a missed opportunity. Could see an Obsidian variant or maybe a blue-flame version working. But Riot seems to have moved on from adding chromas to older skins unless theres a big event tie-in.
Should you buy Scorched Earth Xerath?
Real verdict: if you main Xerath or even play him as a pocket pick for poke comps, this is a strong choice. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. The VFX package carries the skin hard. I’ve tried every Xerath skin at this point and Scorched Earth competes with Dark Star for the top spot. Different vibe though. Dark Star is cosmic horror, Scorched Earth is raw elemental power.
For Xerath one-tricks specifically, this gives your abilities a weight that base skin lacks. The Q feels like it hits harder even though it obviously doesn’t. Been spamming this in Diamond during those long poke lane phases where you’re just farming and harassing under tower, and the visual feedback keeps me engaged. Skip it if you already own Arcana or Dark Star and only play Xerath occasionally. But for mains? Top pick for Xerath mains. The Infernal fantasy on a pure energy champion just works, and twelve years later the VFX still read clean on the Rift.
Might be overthinking it but I genuinely believe this is one of those skins that aged into being better than it was at launch. Back in 2012 we had fewer particles to compare against. Now with modern skins everywhere, Scorched Earth stands out because the lava theme is so distinct from Xerath’s default kit. Simple change – huge impact on how the champion feels to play.
