Pulsefire Ezreal was the first Ultimate skin Riot ever made. June 29, 2012. I remember the community losing its mind over the concept of a skin that evolves during the game. Thirteen years later it shows its age in some areas but there is something nostalgic about loading it up and watching that armor build itself as you level. Bought it when I was still in Silver and I have carried it all the way to Diamond. Literally grew up in League with this skin.

How the evolution system works in practice

Pulsefire Ezreal starts the game in a basic tech suit and evolves through four visual stages as you level up. The armor gets progressively more complex and bulky. By level 16 or so you are wearing full mech-suit armor with a massive gauntlet. Jennifer Wuestling did the splash showing the final form with full Pulsefire armor deployed. The evolution is automatic tied to level thresholds so you dont have to do anything special.

Mystic Shot on Q fires a tech pulse that changes color and intensity with each armor stage. Early game its a small blue bolt. By late game its a chunky energy blast that feels heavier. Essence Flux on W sends out an orb with increasing tech detail at each stage. Arcane Shift on E blinks with a tech flash effect that gets more elaborate as the armor builds. Trueshot Barrage on R fires a massive beam across the map. At full evolution the R beam is noticeably wider visually and has these tech rings expanding outward from the barrel. Sniping someone cross-map with late-game Pulsefire R used to make me feel like a genius back in season 3.

Both Daniel Amerman and Christine Brynn Khalil contributed to the voice work. The AI assistant voice that comments on your gameplay is unique to this skin. It announces your kills, comments on your farm, and generally acts like a heads-up display companion. The recall at final evolution has Ezreal calling down a spaceship for the teleport back to base. Still one of the most elaborate recalls in the game even now.

Context and how it has aged

Released June 29, 2012 at 3250 RP as an Ultimate skin. Part of the Pulsefire skinline which later expanded to include Caitlyn, Shen, Twisted Fate, and others. No chromas. Still available in the shop at full price. The Pulsefire line was basically built around this Ezreal skin before it became its own thing.

Now for the honest part. This skin is over a decade old and it looks it. The model evolution is cool conceptually but the armor textures are rougher than modern Legendary skins. Riot updated it once around 2018 I think but it still feels dated compared to Elementalist Lux or DJ Sona. The Q projectile at early stages looks basic, almost like a default ability recolor rather than a premium skin effect. The auto attack animation at full build is slightly clunkier than base Ezreal which some Ezreal mains genuinely dislike. Not gonna lie, I have missed cs in lane because the auto attack timing feels off compared to base or Battle Academia. Could just be placebo but there is a reason Ezreal one-tricks tend to avoid this skin in high elo ranked games.

The W and E at full evolution deserve some credit though. Essence Flux on W at max armor stage has these expanding tech rings around the orb that look solid, and when you proc it with a follow-up Q the detonation has a satisfying tech explosion effect. Arcane Shift on E at final form leaves behind a portal-like distortion at your departure point that lingers for a second. Small detail but it adds to the sci-fi time traveler fantasy. The Pulsefire skinline lore is about time travelers from the future and Ezreal was the original one before they added Caitlyn, Shen, Twisted Fate, Thresh, and others to the line.

Should you spend 3250 RP on this today

Honestly this is a tough one. At 3250 RP Pulsefire Ezreal is competing against Battle Academia Ezreal and Porcelain Protector Ezreal which are both modern Legendaries that look and feel better in many ways. The evolution gimmick is unique but the execution doesnt hold up against what Riot is producing now.

If you are an Ezreal main who wants to own every skin, sure, grab it. If you are a collector who appreciates League history, Pulsefire Ezreal is a piece of that history. The skin literally pioneered the concept of in-game evolution that later Ultimates like Spirit Guard Udyr and Elementalist Lux refined. Without Pulsefire Ezreal we might not have gotten those skins at all. So there is a respect factor even if the execution does not hold up next to modern standards.

But if you just want the best looking Ezreal skin for ranked, I would point you toward the newer Legendaries first. Battle Academia feels smoother to play, the animations are cleaner, and the VFX are crisper on every ability. Porcelain Protector is gorgeous too. Might catch some hate for saying that but its where I land after owning this skin for over a decade.

Sentimental value is real though. Still load it up sometimes for nostalgia when I’m playing normals at 2 AM. There is something about watching that armor build from level 1 to 16 that still hits. It was revolutionary for its time and I think every League player should at least try it once in practice tool to appreciate where Ultimate skins started. Just maybe dont spend 3250 RP on it in 2026 unless you really feel the pull. The Pulsefire line has expanded far beyond Ezreal at this point but this is where it all began.
