First game I played with Blackfrost Renekton was a top lane mirror into another Renekton running Pool Party. The difference in presence was night and day. Not gonna lie, the dark ice aesthetic on a crocodile who already looks menacing just works on a level I wasnt expecting when I bought it back in March 2020.

What Blackfrost actually brings to Renekton

New model is the biggest draw here. Renekton gets covered in this corrupted ice armor, jagged frost crystals running along his back and shoulders. His blade turns into this massive frozen cleaver that reads really well during auto resets. The color palette shifts from sandy desert tones to deep blacks and icy blues. Clean shift.

VFX got a full rework for an Epic tier skin. His Q slice leaves these frost particles on the ground, and when you hit the empowered Q in a minion wave the heal effect has this cold mist that spreads outward. W stun slams down with ice shards, looks brutal in lane trades. Could be wrong here but I think the empowered W feels slightly more satisfying to land just because of how the ice shatters on impact. E dash trails dark frost behind him, both dashes, and the second one through a target gets this nice cracking effect.

The ult is where things pop off. Renekton’s Dominus form bulks him up with massive ice armor and the fury aura around him turns into this swirling blizzard zone. Played maybe 40 games with this skin in Diamond last season and every time I ulted in a teamfight people physically backed off. The visual threat reads huge. (Random aside: my duo partner started calling me “Frostgator” and it stuck for the whole season.)

Recall animation is new too. He slams his blade into the ground and this ice pillar erupts around him. Standard voice lines though, no new VO. Patrick Seitz still doing the base voice work which honestly fits fine. The growling and aggression pairs well with the frozen aesthetic.

The Blackfrost line and where Renekton fits

David Villegas and West Studio handled the splash. They cooked. The composition puts Renekton mid-stride through what looks like the Freljord tundra, ice blade raised, eyes glowing that signature Blackfrost blue. Strong piece.

Released March 5, 2020. Season 10 if I remember right, around the time everyone was spamming Renekton top before the item rework shook things up. The Blackfrost skinline is one of Riot’s darker fantasy themes. Vel’Koz and Rek’Sai are in there too. Kinda feels like the line works best on champions who already have that predator energy, and Renekton fits that mold perfectly.

7 chromas total for this one. Obsidian is my personal pick, goes full dark mode and the frost effects against the black armor look insane in game. Ruby swaps to red crystal which gives off more of a corrupted bloodstone vibe than ice. Aquamarine leans harder into the blue spectrum if you want the purest frost look. The rest are fine but those three carry the set.

1350 RP price tag. Still in the shop, permanent availability. For what you get with the VFX and model changes thats a solid deal. Been running the Obsidian chroma since about two weeks after release and haven’t looked back.

How it feels in actual ranked games

Renekton mains know this already but skin feel matters on him specifically because you’re doing so many auto resets and animation cancels. The Blackfrost model doesn’t mess with any of the cancel timings from what I can tell after grinding ranked with it. W auto cancel into E feels identical to base. Some Renekton skins have slightly different visual feedback on the empowered W that can throw off your muscle memory. Not this one.

Last Tuesday I was playing into a Darius top, dove him pre-6 with ignite and the Blackfrost W stun animation made the kill clip look clean. The ice shatter on a lethal empowered W just hits different in replays. Real talk though, skin doesnt make you better at the champion. Still need to manage fury properly, still need to know your lane prio windows and when to look for ganking opportunities with your jungler.

Should you buy Blackfrost Renekton?

Verdict time. This is a top three Renekton skin for me. Project Renekton exists and has more flashy tech effects, Hextech has the prestige factor, but Blackfrost nails the balance between visual upgrade and gameplay clarity. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get.

If you main Renekton or even just have him in your top lane rotation for counter picks, this skin earns its spot. The VFX are clear without being distracting, the model upgrade is significant, and the chromas give you options. Maybe just my experience but I see way more Pool Party and Renektoy in my games than Blackfrost, which means you get that rarity factor in lobby too. Best Epic skin for Renekton if you’re not trying to spend Legendary money. Lock it in.
