Star Guardian Sona

First game I played with Star Guardian Sona was around 3 AM on a weeknight, freshly purchased, queued into a Diamond ranked game where my jungler locked in Shaco and I already knew it was over. But the skin? The skin carried my mood that entire session. Not gonna lie, the transformation from Sona’s base model to this Star Guardian version hit harder than I expected for an Epic tier skin.

How Star Guardian Sona actually plays

The VFX overhaul is the centerpiece here. Q sends out these twinkling star projectiles that feel crisp in lane, and your W heal aura gets this shimmering celestial ring that reads clean during teamfights. Honestly its one of those skins where the ability effects make you feel like youre doing more damage than you actually are. E speed boost trails sparkle across the Rift in this soft gradient that doesnt clutter the screen.

Her R is where the money shows. The crescendo wave rolls out with this burst of starlight and magical girl energy. Been running this in ranked for a solid stretch and the ult VFX genuinely help with clarity for your ADC. They can see the stun wave connect. Small detail but matters when you’re trying to peel for a Jinx who tunnels on cs.

Recall animation is new and fits the Star Guardian fantasy. Sona floats up with her etwahl glowing, familiar swoops around her. Cute without being over the top. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, which is standard for 1350 RP. The skin doesnt need it though – Sona’s kit is already so visually driven that the particle work does the heavy lifting.

(Random aside: I set the splash as my Discord profile picture for like two months and nobody commented on it, which felt like a personal attack.)

Star Guardian Season 4 and the details

Released July 14, 2022. Star Guardian Season 4 was one of those massive batch drops where Riot went all in on the skinline. Zhong Yang and West Studio handled the splash, and they captured something special with Sona’s pose. The composition pulls your eye to the etwahl first, then up to her expression. Professional work.

The Star Guardian line has been going since what, season 6 I think or 7 dont remember exactly. Point is Sona fits the magical girl archetype naturally. She’s already got the instrument, the flowing outfit, the supportive kit. Kinda feels like she should have gotten the skin sooner than 2022.

9 chromas total. Obsidian is my pick – goes full dark magical girl and the contrast against the Rift pops hard in bot lane specifically. Tanzanite runs a deep purple that reads like a corrupted Star Guardian which is a vibe. Pearl goes clean white and honestly looks more expensive than the base skin. The rest fill out the usual color wheel but those three stand out from personal use.

Is Star Guardian Sona worth 1350 RP?

Real verdict: if you play Sona in ranked at all, this is a strong pickup. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. The VFX clarity on ult alone makes a difference in chaotic teamfights where you need your engage to land clean. Not sure if it’s just me but I swear my Crescendo accuracy went up after switching to this skin. Placebo probably. Maybe.

Competition-wise, Sona has a deep skin catalog. Odyssey Sona exists, PsyOps exists, DJ Sona exists as an Ultimate. Star Guardian Sona sits comfortably in the top three for non-Ultimate options. The Star Guardian aesthetic gives it replay value that some of her older skins lack.

Shop has it, permanent availability, no vault nonsense. Been spamming this in Diamond on and off since it dropped and keep coming back to it over her other options. Skip this if you already own DJ Sona and never touch anything else – but for Sona mains building a rotation, Star Guardian earns its slot. Worth 1350 RP if you main Sona. The Obsidian chroma pushes it even higher. Grinded maybe 150 games with this one last season and the novelty hasnt worn off, which says something for an Epic skin in a champion pool this crowded.
