First game I played with Infernal Vel’Koz was around 1 AM on a Wednesday, middle of season 10. Locked it in for a Diamond ranked match on a whim after rerolling skin shards. The loading screen splash hit different. Vel’Koz wrapped in molten rock and fire, eye burning bright orange against a ruined landscape. Knew immediately this was staying in my rotation.

What Infernal Vel’Koz actually changes

So the model is a full rework of Vel’Koz’s tentacles and body into this volcanic, magma-cracked creature. The base purple void aesthetic gets completely swapped for deep blacks and glowing orange fissures running across every surface. Feels like something that crawled out of the earth instead of the Void. Massive visual shift.

Q fires out a molten projectile that splits with this satisfying ember trail. Honestly not gonna lie, the split feels crunchier to land with Infernal than base just because the particles are more visible against the Rift. W opens up a ground fissure that glows orange and red, lava bubbling up from below. Looks clean in lane and even cleaner in teamfights when you’re laying it down on grouped enemies.

E is where I think the skin shines most. The disruption circle has this volcanic eruption effect, magma shooting upward. Been playing poke comps in Diamond where I sit backline and peel with E, and the visual clarity on Infernal’s knockup is genuinely better than base for tracking your own cooldowns in chaotic fights. Could be wrong here but I swear my E accuracy went up 10% just from the particle readability.

The R though. Lifeform Disintegration Ray becomes a straight beam of concentrated fire. Not subtle. The screen presence of ulting with Infernal Vel’Koz in a teamfight is hard to overstate. You Q poke from range, W the wave, and then channel R through three or four people in dragon pit and the visual feedback is chef’s kiss. Trapped their Jinx and Thresh last Tuesday in a narrow jungle path with it. Beautiful stuff.

New recall animation too. Vel’Koz channels fire and basically incinerates the ground beneath him. Short and punchy. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, but the voice filter isn’t missed here because the visual package carries the skin hard enough on its own.

The Infernal line and where this skin fits

Released July 16, 2020. Xiao Guang Sun and West Studio handled the artwork, and they cooked on this one. The splash captures the scale perfectly, Vel’Koz looming over a burning landscape with that singular eye radiating heat.

The Infernal skinline is one of Riot’s oldest thematic sets. Champions like Nasus, Diana, Akali all got Infernal treatments over the years. Vel’Koz fits the theme naturally because his geometry already looks alien and imposing. Wrapping that in fire and volcanic rock just amplifies what was already there. The Infernal line works best on non-human champions and Vel’Koz is about as non-human as it gets.

6 chromas total for this one. Ruby deepens the red tones which feels redundant on an already fire-themed skin. Amethyst is my pick, swaps the orange for deep purple energy that actually reads like a void-fire hybrid. Really cool contrast. Emerald turns everything green flame which gives off a fel-fire vibe if you’re into that. (Random aside: my duo partner refuses to play with me when I use the Rainbow chroma because he says it looks like a Pride parade Vel’Koz and he cant focus.) The other options are Catseye and Rose Quartz, decent but nothing that made me switch off Amethyst after trying them all.

This is an Epic tier skin at 1350 RP. Shop has it, permanent availability, no vault rotation nonsense. Standard pricing for what you get.

Worth the 1350 RP?

Real verdict: Infernal Vel’Koz is probably the second best Vel’Koz skin behind Blackfrost. That’s not a knock. Vel’Koz doesnt have a massive skin catalog, you’re picking between this, Battlecast, Arclight, Definitely Not, and Blackfrost basically. Arclight is clean but dated. Battlecast has the Battlecast tax where every skin in that line looks samey. Definitely Not is a meme pick.

Infernal sits in this sweet spot where the VFX are distinct enough to feel premium, the model is genuinely transformed, and the color palette reads well in game. Spammed this in Diamond for maybe 30 games straight when it dropped and never felt like going back to base. The Q split particles alone justify it for Vel’Koz mains who care about visual clarity in lane.

1350 RP feels fair for what you get. Not overpriced, not a steal. If you one-trick Vel’Koz or even just have him in your mid/support rotation, Infernal is worth picking up. Skip it only if you already own Blackfrost and dont need a second option. For everyone else maining the eye of the Void this season, top pick for Vel’Koz mains alongside Blackfrost. The Amethyst chroma specifically elevates it another tier if you’re willing to spend the extra.
