First time I saw Infernal Karthus load in, I thought someone modded their client. The base Karthus model is so dated that seeing him wrapped in actual fire and molten rock felt like a different champion entirely. Been running this skin in Diamond for a couple seasons now and honestly its one of those skins that makes you feel like your R hits harder. Placebo? Probably. But the VFX sell it.
What Infernal Karthus actually brings to the table
So this is a 1350 RP Epic tier skin, which means new VFX, new recall, but base voice lines. No VO refresh. For Karthus specifically that matters less because you spend most of your time either farming with Q or pressing R from fountain after dying in a teamfight. The Q – Lay Waste – drops these volcanic eruptions instead of the standard green circles. Cleaner to read in lane, which I think actually helps with cs accuracy. Not gonna lie, the hitbox feels more honest visually than base Karthus Q where the green circle sometimes looks bigger than it actually is.
W – Wall of Pain – becomes this cracked lava barrier. Looks sick in choke points around dragon pit. Trapped their Jinx behind it last Tuesday in a ranked game and the wall just looked menacing cutting across the river. E – Defile – pulses with fire instead of the usual death aura, and it reads well in teamfights when you’re standing in the middle of everyone doing your Karthus thing. Dying, dealing damage, the usual.
The R though. Requiem. The whole screen gets that Infernal treatment and the pillars of fire dropping on enemies across the map feel weighty. Played maybe 40 games with this skin in a two-week stretch around season 11 and every ult felt like an event. Compare that to base Karthus where the ult animation is just… there.
Recall animation has Karthus channeling fire upward. Short and clean. Nothing groundbreaking but it fits the theme.
The Infernal line and where Karthus fits
Infernal Karthus dropped July 16, 2020. Mid-season 10. West Studio handled the artwork and they captured this volcanic lich energy perfectly. The Infernal skinline is one of Riot’s older thematic sets – Infernal Nasus, Infernal Diana, Infernal Shen all live in this space. Karthus fits naturally because hes already a death mage, so wrapping him in hellfire doesnt feel forced. Some Infernal skins look like they just slapped orange VFX on a random champion. This one actually makes sense thematically.
(Random aside: the splash art is my desktop background on my second monitor. The way the flames frame his staff is genuinely good composition work.)
6 chromas total if you want variety. Ruby keeps the red but shifts the tone darker. Sapphire flips the whole thing to blue fire which honestly looks incredible – might be overthinking it but blue flames on a death mage just hits the fantasy harder. Amethyst goes purple and gives off Dark Star vibes without committing to that skinline. The rest are fine but those three stand out.
Shop has it. 1350 RP, permanent availability. Nothing exclusive about getting your hands on this one.
How it stacks up against other Karthus skins
Real talk though. Karthus doesn’t have the deepest skin pool. Pentakill is iconic for the meme factor. Karthus Lightsbane exists. Arcana Karthus came later and competes directly. Could be wrong here but I think Infernal sits comfortably at second or third best depending on whether you value the Arcana aesthetic more. Pentakill III Lost Chapter is decent too but the metal theme isnt for everyone.
For 1350 RP the package is solid. New VFX on every ability, recall animation, model that actually looks modern. Voice stays default but Karthus voice lines are already good enough that I dont miss new VO. The Q VFX alone justify the price for anyone who spams Karthus in ranked. Been maining Karthus with this skin equipped since around season 12 I think, maybe late 11 dont remember exactly, and I keep coming back to it over the alternatives.
Should you buy it?
Verdict time. If you play Karthus at all – jungle or mid, either works – Infernal Karthus earns its 1350 RP. The ability VFX are clean, the model update is massive compared to base, and Sapphire chroma specifically is worth grabbing alongside. Seen maybe 5 of these in my games all season which means you wont run into yourself in the loading screen. Worth 1350 if you main Karthus. Skip it only if you’re holding out for Arcana, which costs the same but trades fire for a tarot card aesthetic. For the average Karthus player grinding solo queue, this is the skin. Top pick for Karthus mains and it holds up years after release.
