First time I saw this skin pop up in Hextech crafting I had to do a double take. Kog’Maw already looks like something that crawled out of a steampunk nightmare, so wrapping him in brass gears and crystal energy felt like one of those ideas that shouldnt work but somehow does. Been sitting on this one since late 2017 and I still lock it in when I want my ADC pick to look expensive.
The Hextech treatment on Kog’Maw
So the base model gets a full overhaul. Kog’Maw’s body trades the organic Void look for polished bronze plating with turquoise crystal cores running through his frame. Think clockwork insect meets arcane battery. The crystals pulse with energy, and the glow effect is subtle enough that it reads cleanly on the Rift without being distracting during teamfights.
New VFX across the board. His Q (Caustic Spittle) fires a concentrated burst of Hextech energy instead of the usual acid glob. Feels crisper visually. W (Bio-Arcane Barrage) is where it gets interesting: the extended range autos leave these crystalline trails that shatter on impact. Could be wrong here but I think the W particles are actually slightly easier to track than base, which matters when you’re trying to cs in lane and manage your attack range timer.
E (Void Ooze) lays down a trail of molten bronze-blue energy. Clean. Not as flashy as some legendary skins but for a Mythic it holds up. His R (Living Artillery) drops Hextech bombs that explode in geometric patterns. Played maybe 150 games with this skin across seasons and the R indicator still looks sharp. No new voice lines though. Voice stays default, which is fine because Kog’Maw’s base VO has that goofy charm anyway.
The recall animation is the real showpiece. Kog’Maw assembles himself piece by piece from Hextech components, gears clicking into place until he’s fully formed. Solid work. It’s one of those recalls you actually want to sit through instead of spam-clicking.
Hextech line context and release details
Hextech Kog’Maw dropped December 7, 2017. Late season 7 if I remember right. Jennifer Wuestling nailed the splash, the composition puts Kog’Maw front and center with all that brass and crystal energy radiating outward. Worth zooming in on the detail work.
The Hextech skinline is Riot’s prestige crafting line. These skins were originally gated behind Hextech Gemstones, now its Mythic Essence. The line includes champions like Swain, Kassadin, Poppy, and a bunch of others. Hextech as a theme leans into the Piltover-adjacent fantasy: clockwork mechanisms, blue-green crystal power, ornate metalwork. Kog’Maw fits the aesthetic better than you’d expect for a Void creature.
No chromas on this one. Mythic skins generally dont get the chroma treatment, which makes sense given the crafting exclusivity. (Random aside: I keep this splash as my client background, the color palette is that good.)
Availability is through Mythic Essence in the rotating shop. You cant just buy it with RP whenever you want. Hextech Kog’Maw cycles through the Mythic shop rotation, so you need to either catch it when its available or get lucky with rerolls. Seen maybe 4 of these in my Diamond games all season, its rare enough that people actually notice when you lock it in.
How it feels in game
Real talk though. Playing Kog’Maw with this skin in the bot lane specifically, the auto attack animations feel clean. Not different mechanically obviously, but the visual feedback on W-empowered autos gives you a better sense of your damage output. Spammed this in Diamond last season during the on-hit Kog’Maw meta and the VFX never got old even after back to back games.
One thing that stands out: the passive (Icathian Surprise) explosion. When Kog’Maw dies and runs at enemies, the Hextech version has this crystalline overload effect. Looked fantastic that one ranked game around 1 AM where I traded kills with their Katarina and the explosion actually secured a double. My support pinged the skin after. Worth it just for the death animation honestly.
Not gonna lie, the skin does feel slightly bulkier visually than base Kog’Maw. The brass plating adds perceived size. Doesnt affect hitbox at all but in lane it might make you feel like a bigger target. Kinda feels like Riot could have slimmed the silhouette slightly, but that’s a nitpick.
Should you craft Hextech Kog’Maw?
Verdict time. If you main Kog’Maw and you’ve got Mythic Essence burning a hole in your inventory, this is a strong pick. The VFX refresh is meaningful, the recall is clean, the model quality holds up even years after release. For a Mythic tier skin it delivers on the premium feel without being obnoxious about it.
The competition for Kog’Maw skins is decent. Pug’Maw has the meme factor, Bee’Maw is adorable, Lion Dance has the legacy prestige. But Hextech Kog’Maw hits a different lane: it’s the “I take this champion seriously” option. Top pick for Kog’Maw mains who want something clean over something cute. The Hextech line earned its reputation with skins like this. No new VO holds it back from perfection, but the visual package compensates. If you’re climbing with Kog’Maw this season and the skin rotates into the Mythic shop, dont sleep on it.
