Festive Maokai

Not gonna lie, first time I saw Festive Maokai loading in I thought someone was trolling. A Christmas tree Maokai. Full ornaments, tinsel energy, the whole deal. But then the game started and the VFX hit different than I expected. Been running this skin on and off since like season 4 when I first picked up Maokai for ranked, and it still gets reactions in lobby chat every December.

What Festive Maokai actually looks like in game

So Maokai becomes a decorated Christmas tree. Thats the pitch. Ornaments hanging off him, lights wrapped around his branches, a star topper. Simple concept but Riot committed to it fully. The model swap is clean for a 975 RP skin from 2011.

The VFX are where this gets interesting. His Q sends out a wave with a wintery feel, his saplings from E look like little gift boxes running at people. Played maybe 30 games with this last December in Diamond and I swear the saplings tilted a Katarina so hard she all-chatted about it. The brush saplings catching people out with tiny present explosions is genuinely funny. His W root and R also carry the holiday theme through.

Voice lines stay base. No new recall animation either, which makes sense for a skin this old. Pre-season 2 Riot wasnt doing custom recalls yet. But for what it is, the visual changes carry enough personality. Playing this skin, the holiday VFX on Q feel crisp against the Rift’s terrain, especially on the winter map when it used to rotate in.

Snowdown Showdown and the 2011 holiday drop

Festive Maokai released December 14, 2011. Deep into season 1 territory. Part of the Snowdown Showdown line, which was Riot’s annual holiday event before they started doing bigger themed passes. Mike Azevedo nailed the splash, the composition with Maokai standing in a snowy clearing with presents scattered around captures the vibe perfectly.

Legacy vault skin. You cant just grab it whenever. Sits in the vault and comes out during Snowdown events or special shop rotations. Might be overthinking it but I feel like the Legacy status actually makes this skin more fun to use. Seen maybe 5 of these total across all my ranked games this past season. When one shows up in champ select around Christmas time its always a good sign for team morale.

975 RP is the price tag but you need the vault to open first. Standard tier pricing for a skin that honestly punches above its weight class in terms of personality. No chromas available, which is fine. A Christmas tree doesnt need recolors (random aside: my duo partner has this and Meowkai and alternates based on mood, respect the commitment).

Should you grab Festive Maokai?

Real verdict: if you play Maokai in the jungle or top lane with any regularity, this is worth picking up next time it rotates out of the vault. 975 RP feels fair for what you get. The holiday VFX on his saplings alone justify it for the meme factor in solo queue.

Last December around 1 AM I was grinding ranked and locked in Festive Maokai for a teamfight comp. Our ADC typed “love the tree” in chat and we won that game off good vibes alone. Could be wrong here but I think there’s real psychological value in a skin that makes your team laugh pre-6. The Snowdown Showdown skins have this energy that newer event skins dont always capture.

Skip it if you already own Astronaut Maokai or Meowkai, those are objectively more polished. But for Maokai mains who want the full collection or just love seasonal skins, Festive Maokai is a solid Legacy pickup. Not the best Maokai skin full stop, but one with genuine character. Worth 975 RP if you main Maokai and catch it during a vault rotation.
