First game I played with Cosmic Hunter Varus was around 2 AM on a Wednesday, queued up for a Diamond ranked game and immediately noticed how clean the Q charge looked. Not gonna lie, I wasnt expecting much from another Varus skin but this one changed my mind fast. The whole celestial archer fantasy just works here in a way that some of his other skins miss completely.
How Cosmic Hunter Varus actually plays
The VFX overhaul is the main selling point at 1350 RP. Piercing Arrow charges up with this swirling cosmic energy that reads beautifully in lane. You can actually track the charge level better than base because the particle buildup is so distinct. Played maybe 40 games with this skin over two weeks and the Q never got old visually.
Hail of Arrows drops these star-fragment particles on the ground. Subtle change but it looks way better than the default purple pool. The W proc marks on enemies show up as little constellation patterns, which is a nice touch for tracking your blight stacks in teamfights. Chain of Corruption is where the skin really shines though. The ult fires out with trailing starlight and the tendrils that spread to nearby enemies have this deep blue glow. Hit a 3-person ult in dragon pit last season and my support pinged the emote wheel for like ten seconds straight.
Recall animation is solid. Varus draws his bow toward the cosmos, constellations form around him. Standard Epic tier recall quality. Voice lines stay base, no new VO. Kinda feels like Riot could have at least added a voice filter for the cosmic theme but that’s asking a lot at this price point.
(Random aside: the auto attack sound on this skin has a specific metallic ring that I find genuinely satisfying for cs-ing in bot lane.)
The Cosmic line and where Varus fits
Cosmic Hunter Varus released November 24, 2020. Late into season 10, right around preseason chaos. West Studio handled the artwork and they captured something special with the splash. Varus floating among nebulae, bow drawn, looking like he belongs in an astronomy textbook. The Cosmic skinline is one of Riot’s more consistent themes. Cosmic Lulu, Cosmic Hecarim, Cosmic Nami – they all share that deep space palette but each champion gets a unique spin.
For Varus specifically the hunter angle works. He’s already an archer with that predatory vibe, so wrapping him in starlight and giving him a constellation motif feels natural. Better fit than some forced skinline placements I’ve seen. The Cosmic line has maybe 15+ skins at this point and this sits comfortably in the upper half quality-wise.
7 chromas available total. Obsidian is my pick, the dark cosmic look with black and deep purple reads like a completely different skin. Amethyst leans harder into the purple mage fantasy which suits the poke ADC playstyle. Pearl is interesting if you want something lighter but honestly it washes out some of the VFX contrast on Summoner’s Rift. Been running Obsidian exclusively in my Diamond games since season 12 I think or 13 dont remember exactly.
Worth the 1350 RP?
Real verdict: Cosmic Hunter Varus sits in a weird spot in his skin catalog. Varus has a lot of options now. Dark Star Varus exists as the other space-themed pick and arguably has tighter VFX integration. Project Varus goes full sci-fi. High Noon Varus brings a completely different aesthetic. So the competition is real.
Could be wrong here but I think Cosmic Hunter edges out most of his Epic tier options purely on VFX clarity. The Q and R particles are genuinely easier to read in chaotic teamfights compared to something like Arctic Ops where the white particles blend into river terrain. For ADC mains who care about visual clarity while poking from the backline, that matters.
Shop has it permanently. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. New VFX across all abilities, solid recall, clean splash art. No new voice lines holds it back from being exceptional but that’s standard at this price tier. If you main Varus and want a skin that looks premium without dropping Legendary money, Cosmic Hunter is a strong pick. Maybe not the absolute best Varus skin full stop, but top three for sure. Been daily driving it this season whenever I’m not on Dark Star and the skin just holds up game after game, especially in late-game teamfights where the ult VFX really pop off during engages around objectives.
