First time I saw Uncle Ryze in a loading screen I thought someone was trolling. Patriotic hat, red white and blue outfit, the whole thing looks like Ryze got drafted into a Fourth of July parade. Played against one last season around 2 AM on a weeknight and honestly I wasnt even mad about losing lane because the skin had me distracted. Wild concept for a mage champion.
What actually changes on Uncle Ryze
So for a 520 RP Standard tier skin, Uncle Ryze does come with new VFX which is kind of unusual at this price point. The spell effects pick up the patriotic color scheme. His Q poke has a different visual read, and the ult channel looks slightly adjusted too. Not a massive overhaul but noticeable if you pay attention.
Model-wise Ryze trades his usual robes for the Uncle Sam getup. Top hat, star-spangled outfit, the scroll he carries fits the theme somehow. Could be wrong here but I think the texture work holds up decent for a 2010 skin. Obviously it shows its age compared to modern releases. Voice lines stay base, no new VO or recall animation.
The splash reads clearly in champion select. Bo ‘chenbowow’ Chen handled the artwork and it captures the vibe they were going for. Ryze pointing directly at the viewer like a recruitment poster. Classic composition.
The Wonders of the World line and release context
Uncle Ryze dropped July 3, 2010. Right before Independence Day, obviously. Part of the Wonders of the World skinline which is one of those older thematic groups Riot used to do. Real niche stuff.
Been maining Ryze with this skin off and on for years and the thing about it is nobody runs it. Seen maybe two other Uncle Ryze players in my Diamond games all season. That rarity factor is worth something. Zero chromas available so what you see is what you get.
520 RP is the asking price and shop has it permanently. No vault rotation, no loot-only nonsense. Just sitting there waiting. (Random aside: I keep this skin in rotation purely because it tilts people in lane when they lose to Uncle Sam Ryze.) For context Ryze has a massive skin catalog at this point so Uncle Ryze competes with options like Dark Crystal and Zombie for attention.
Should you pick up Uncle Ryze
Straight talk: this is a novelty skin. You buy Uncle Ryze because you think it’s funny or because you want something nobody else runs. Not because the VFX are going to blow your mind. The new spell effects are a nice touch at 520 RP though. Most skins at this price bracket dont bother.
Kinda feels like Riot made this purely for the meme value and honestly that’s fine. If you’re a Ryze one-trick looking to fill out the collection, 520 RP feels fair for what you get. It’s not competing with his Legendary or Epic options on quality but it has character. Played this into a ranked game last Thursday where my jungler kept calling me “Mr. President” in chat the entire match. That alone justified the purchase.
For Ryze mains specifically, the skin reads well enough in teamfights and the Q poke visual is distinct from base. Wont confuse your backline peeling or anything. If you want a budget Ryze skin with personality over polish, Uncle Ryze delivers. Skip it if you already own Zombie or Dark Crystal though, those are objectively better executions at slightly higher price points.
