First time I saw Pulsefire Riven load in, I thought someone was playing a different game entirely. The whole aesthetic just shifts away from anything Riven normally looks like. Not sure if it’s just me but the skin reads more sci-fi assassin than exiled warrior, and honestly thats part of the appeal. Locked this in for maybe 30 ranked games the week it dropped and the feel was immediately different from base.
What actually changes on Pulsefire Riven
The model is a full redesign. Riven goes from her tattered Noxian look to this sleek time-traveler armor with glowing circuit lines running through the blade. Blue and white dominate the palette. Clean lines everywhere.
VFX got a proper overhaul for an Epic. Her Q combo hits with these digital slash trails, each one leaves behind data fragments that dissolve. Looks sharp in teamfights when you’re diving the backline. W stun pulses out with a hexagonal grid pattern instead of the standard green burst. E dash trails this stream of blue particles behind her. Could be wrong here but I think the shield itself has a holographic edge to it that base doesn’t have.
The recall is where Riot put extra attention. Riven reassembles her blade using some kind of time-manipulation tech, pieces floating in and clicking together. Watched it probably 40 times in practice tool one evening around midnight. Voice lines stay base, no new VO. Standard for 1350 RP Epics from that era. The sound effects on Q and R got tuned though. More electronic, less metallic. Her ult activation has this power-up hum that I think reads better in lane than the default wind sound.
R is the standout. Wind Slash fires with a blue energy wave instead of the green crescent. In a close engage where you’re flashing forward for the execute, that blue wave cutting across the screen just hits different. Played a game last season where I caught their Jinx and Lulu with one R2 near dragon pit and the visual was clean enough that my duo clipped it.
The Pulsefire line and where this fits
Pulsefire dropped May 17, 2018. Season 8. Bo ‘chenbowow’ Chen nailed the splash, the composition with Riven mid-leap through some temporal rift is one of the better Pulsefire pieces in the set.
The Pulsefire skinline started with Ezreal back in 2012 as an Ultimate and then Riot expanded it into a full thematic. Riven fits the line well. The time-cop warrior angle works for a champion who’s all about broken weapons and fractured identity. Caitlyn and Shen also got Pulsefire skins around the same time. Riven holds up against both of them, maybe edges out Shen for second best in the line behind Ezreal.
One chroma available: Chrono. Deep navy blue with crimson accents. (Random aside: the Chrono color scheme reminds me of those old Gundam villain units and I cant stop seeing it.) If you pick up Pulsefire Riven I’d say grab Chrono too, the red trim on the blade looks more aggressive than the base blue-white. Shop has it, both the skin and chroma are permanent.
Is 1350 RP worth it for Pulsefire Riven
Real verdict: Riven has a massive skin pool. Been maining Riven on and off since season 5 and the competition is steep. Spirit Blossom exists. Broken Covenant exists. Valiant Sword exists. Pulsefire doesn’t top those for me but it fills a niche none of them cover.
If you want a sci-fi Riven, this is your only real option. The VFX are clean, the model is distinct, and the recall animation earned its spot. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. Might be overthinking it but I think the Q animations on this skin actually feel slightly faster visually, which messes with your muscle memory for the fast combo in a good way. Three things stood out after grinding with it: ult VFX, recall, blade model.
Skip this if you already own Spirit Blossom or Valiant Sword and you’re tight on RP. But for Riven one-tricks building a collection, Pulsefire Riven is a solid mid-tier pickup. Not her best skin, not close to her worst. The Pulsefire fantasy works here and this Epic earns its price tag. Worth 1350 if you main Riven and want something different from the usual fantasy swords aesthetic she’s stuck with in half her catalog.
