First time I saw Pirate Ryze in a loading screen I thought someone was trolling. A blue mage with a scroll running around dressed like he raided Gangplank’s wardrobe. Not gonna lie, it grew on me fast. Been running this on and off since season 3 and theres something about the absurdity that just works in solo queue.
What Pirate Ryze actually changes
For a 975 RP Standard tier skin, Pirate Ryze delivers more than you’d expect. Ryze swaps his usual robes for a full pirate getup – tricorn hat, captain’s coat, the whole deal. His scroll gets rethemed too, looks like a treasure map now. The model rework hits that Bilgewater fantasy cleanly without going overboard on the details.
VFX got a refresh which is rare at this price point. His Q fires with a slightly different particle trail, and the overall spell coloring leans into that sea-weathered aesthetic. Nothing dramatic but you notice it mid-lane when you’re trading. The recall animation is custom too. Ryze pulls out his map and studies it like he’s plotting a course. Clean little touch.
Voice lines stay base, no new VO. Dave B. Mitchell’s standard Ryze lines play through, which honestly still slap. Could be wrong here but I think the base voice actually fits the pirate theme better than some of the newer legendary skins fit theirs. The gruff delivery works when you’re dressed like a buccaneer.
Played maybe 200 games with this skin across multiple seasons. The auto attack animation feels identical to base, no weird timing differences that mess with your cs rhythm. Important for Ryze mains who care about that stuff. (Random aside: my duo partner refuses to play with me when I lock this skin in because he says the hat is “disrespectful to ranked.”)
The Bilgewater connection and release history
Pirate Ryze dropped October 26, 2012. Early days. The Bilgewater: Burning Tides skinline wasnt even fully established yet back then, but Riot retroactively folded it in. Makes sense thematically. Mist XG handled the artwork and they captured the vibe perfectly – Ryze standing on what looks like a ship deck with storm clouds rolling in.
This one sits in the vault. Legacy catalog skin, so you cant just grab it whenever you want. Pops up during special sales events or you might roll it from Hextech crafting if you’re lucky. Season 4 or 5 I think is when they vaulted it, dont remember exactly. Point is if you see it available during a Legacy sale, that’s your window.
No chromas on this one. Straight base skin, take it or leave it. For a 2012 release that’s expected. Riot wasnt doing the chroma thing back then.
Should you pick up Pirate Ryze?
Real verdict: 975 RP feels fair for what you get. Custom VFX and a recall animation at this price tier is above average. Most 975 skins from that era were just model swaps and nothing else. Pirate Ryze actually put in work.
The Bilgewater: Burning Tides line has some bangers across other champions but Ryze’s entry holds up. Not the flashiest Ryze skin – Professor Ryze and Dark Crystal Ryze compete hard in the “fun novelty” space – but Pirate Ryze has that old school charm. Kinda feels like Riot wouldn’t make something this goofy today.
Worth it if you main Ryze and want variety in your skin rotation. Last Tuesday around 2 AM I was grinding ranked and locked this in three games straight. Won two of them. The skin doesnt win you games obviously but the confidence boost from looking like a seafaring mage who discovered Flux magic on the open ocean – that’s real. Top pick for Ryze mains who want something different without dropping Legendary money. If you spot it in the Legacy rotation or pull it from a chest, keep it.
