Elderwood Veigar

First time I saw Elderwood Veigar in a loading screen I thought it was a custom skin someone modded in. The little treant wizard look caught me off guard. Been running this skin on and off since it dropped in season 9, and honestly its one of those skins that just grows on you the more you play it. Pun intended.

The forest mage glow-up Veigar needed

Elderwood Veigar turns the tiny master of evil into this ancient forest spirit draped in bark armor and glowing leaves. The model rework is solid for an Epic skin. Veigar’s staff becomes this twisted branch with a bright green orb pulsing at the top, and his hat transforms into what looks like a hollowed-out tree stump. Weird choice on paper. Works perfectly in game.

The VFX are where Riot put in the real work here. Q shoots out these green nature bolts that feel snappy to land. W drops a circle of roots and leaves instead of the usual dark matter, and the impact reads clearly even in chaotic teamfights. Not gonna lie, the E cage is the highlight for me. Glowing trees sprout up to form the stun walls and there’s something satisfying about trapping their Katarina inside a ring of enchanted oaks during a dragon fight last week around midnight.

His R, the big nuke, launches this massive green energy burst that keeps the “deleting someone from existence” fantasy alive while fitting the forest theme. Played maybe 150 games with this skin and the ult VFX never gets old. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, which is fine because Veigar’s default lines are already peak villain energy.

The recall animation is new though. Veigar sits down and conjures little forest creatures around him before getting pulled back to base. Quick and clean. (Random aside: my duo partner calls the recall animation “Veigar’s therapy session” and I cant even argue with that.)

Elderwood line and the details behind the skin

Released August 29, 2019. Late summer, right before Worlds season that year. Maki Planas Mata nailed the splash art. The composition puts Veigar in this deep enchanted forest with these massive glowing trees behind him, staff raised like he’s about to one-shot the entire woodland.

The Elderwood skinline is one of Riot’s more consistent themes. Hecarim, Bard, Ahri all got solid entries. Veigar fits naturally into the fantasy because his whole silhouette already reads as “small mysterious creature with big hat.” The transition to forest spirit wasnt a stretch.

9 chromas total if you want variety. Obsidian is my go-to, turns the whole palette dark and moody which fits the “evil yordle” energy better than base green. Amethyst hits hard too, the purple tones make Veigar look like he belongs in a Coven skin instead. Rainbow exists for the meme value and I respect anyone who locks that in for ranked. Could be wrong here but I think the base green is still the cleanest read in lane though.

Verdict on Elderwood Veigar

1350 RP for Elderwood Veigar feels fair for what you get. New VFX across all abilities, solid model changes, a fun recall. You’re not getting new voice lines at this price point and thats expected for an Epic tier skin. Standard pricing.

Should you buy it? If you main Veigar or even just have him in your mid lane rotation for climbing, this is a strong pickup. Might be overthinking it but I think the green VFX actually reads slightly better than base in terms of ability clarity, especially the E cage. Been spamming Veigar in Diamond this split and I keep coming back to Elderwood over Final Boss honestly.

The competition in Veigar’s skin catalog is real though. Final Boss is the Legendary with all the arcade references, and Astronaut has that clean white aesthetic. But for pure “this champion fantasy but elevated” energy, Elderwood is arguably the best Veigar skin at the 1350 tier. Permanent shop, grab it whenever. Skip if you already own Final Boss and dont play Veigar enough to justify two skins, but for one-tricks this is the pick. Season 9 release that still holds up in season 14.
