Blood Moon Zilean

First time I saw Blood Moon Zilean in a loading screen I had to double-take. Zilean getting a Blood Moon skin felt random back in 2015, but the more I played it the more the aesthetic clicked. Old time mage channeling demonic ritual energy. Works better than it has any right to.

What Blood Moon Zilean actually brings

For a 975 RP Standard tier skin, the changes are solid. The VFX got a full rework into deep crimson and dark purple tones. His Q bombs shift from those golden clockwork orbs to these floating Blood Moon lanterns basically, red particles swirling around them before detonation. Looks clean in lane and in teamfights where you’re lobbing double bombs into the backline.

Not gonna lie, the W and E dont get as dramatic of a treatment. Speed up and slow still read clearly but the red particle overlay is subtle. Where the skin really earns it is the recall animation. Zilean sits down and performs this ritual with floating Blood Moon masks circling him. Been running this skin in my Diamond games since maybe season 7 and the recall still hasn’t gotten old. Small detail but it matters when you’re sitting in bot lane waiting for your ADC to finish a back.

Voice lines stay base. No new VO which is expected at this price point. The base Zilean voice works fine here honestly, his whole cryptic time-obsessed thing pairs well with the Blood Moon ritual vibe.

The Blood Moon line and where Zilean fits

Blood Moon released May 10, 2015. Mid season 5. Christian Fell nailed the splash, the composition with Zilean hovering above those ceremonial flames hits hard. The Blood Moon skinline is one of Riot’s longest running thematic lines and Zilean slots in naturally. Most Blood Moon skins lean into the Ionian demon mask fantasy and Zilean’s version commits to it. Full oni-style mask replacing his usual headpiece, robes shifted to deep reds and blacks with gold trim accents.

Could be wrong here but I think this was the only Zilean skin for a while that actually changed his silhouette meaningfully. The mask alone makes him look like a completely different champion in game. No chromas on this one which is a shame because a white and gold variant would have gone crazy. (Random aside: Zilean mains are starved for content so we take what we can get.)

The Blood Moon set from that era included Zilean alongside Kennen and Thresh I think. Maybe Elise too. That 2015 batch had a specific art direction that felt more grounded than some of the later Blood Moon releases. Less flashy, more atmospheric.

Should you pick up Blood Moon Zilean?

Real verdict: 975 RP feels fair for what you get. New VFX on the bombs, a quality recall animation, and a complete model overhaul. For Zilean mains specifically this is a strong option. Took this into ranked for maybe 40 games last month and the bomb VFX actually read better against certain map skins than the base. Could be placebo but my double bomb stun rate felt higher just because the visual timing was cleaner.

Shop has it. Permanent availability so no rush. If you’re climbing with Zilean support or running him mid for the cheese factor, Blood Moon Zilean is the skin. Kinda feels like the best Zilean cosmetic if you want something with personality but dont need Legendary-tier production. Sugar Rush exists if you want something lighter in tone but Blood Moon has more presence on the Rift.

Top pick for Zilean mains. 975 RP well spent, especially if you’re spamming him in ranked this season. Last Tuesday I had a game where I ulted our Kayn three times in one teamfight at dragon pit and every single one of those res animations looked sick with the Blood Moon particles. That alone sold me on keeping it in rotation permanently.
