First game I played with Blood Moon Ryze I got four honors. Not because I played well, honestly I think I inted twice bot side, but because the skin just looks that clean in teamfights. The Blood Moon line has always been one of Riot’s stronger thematic sets and Ryze fits it better than I expected. Scroll mage channeling ancient demon energy? Yeah that tracks.
What Blood Moon Ryze actually brings to the table
For 1350 RP you get the standard Epic package: new model, new VFX, new recall animation. Voice lines stay base, no VO refresh. The model swap is where this skin earns its keep though. Ryze trades his usual blue-purple scholar look for full oni mask territory. Red and white robes, demonic mask pushed up on his forehead, the whole Blood Moon ritual aesthetic.
The VFX work is solid across the board. Q feels snappier with the crimson particle trail, and theres something about the red energy that makes it easier to track in lane. Could be wrong here but I swear the W root circle reads cleaner against the Rift floor than base Ryze. The prison effect gets this dark red sigil treatment that actually looks menacing.
E spread is where it gets interesting. The flux mark carries that Blood Moon crimson through minion waves and watching it bounce in a stacked teamfight is genuinely satisfying. R portal goes full ritual circle with oni imagery. Been running this in Diamond for maybe 30 games now and the ult VFX alone sold me. Big glowing red portal, your whole team walks through looking like they’re about to perform some kind of summoning.
Recall animation has Ryze performing a Blood Moon ritual. Short but clean. (Random aside: I use the recall cancel to flex the animation start in lane when I have prio, its become a habit at this point.)
The Blood Moon line and where Ryze fits
Blood Moon is one of the oldest skinlines Riot keeps returning to. Started way back with Akali and Shen, grew into this massive roster. Ryze joining the Blood Moon roster felt natural. The champion’s whole fantasy revolves around containing dangerous arcane power, and the Blood Moon theme is literally about channeling forbidden demon energy. Perfect overlap.
Not gonna lie, I think Blood Moon Ryze sits comfortably in the upper half of Blood Moon skins. Not touching Blood Moon Jhin obviously, that’s a different tier entirely. But compared to some of the weaker entries in the line? This one delivers.
8 chromas total if you want variety. Obsidian is my pick, goes full dark ritual vibe that fits the theme harder than base. Emerald is interesting too, swaps the red for green demon energy which reads like a completely different skin in game. Pearl exists for the clean white aesthetic crowd but I think it loses some of the Blood Moon identity when you strip the red out. The rest are there if you want them but those three are the ones worth looking at.
Should you buy Blood Moon Ryze?
Straight talk: this is a good Epic skin. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. The VFX overhaul is noticeable in every ability, the model looks great, the thematic fit works. Base voice lines, no new VO, which is standard for this price point so no complaints there.
Shop has it, permanent availability, grab it whenever. If you’re a Ryze main climbing through ranked this season, Blood Moon is top two or three in his skin catalog. Maybe just my experience but I’ve seen more Blood Moon Ryze players in my games lately than any other Ryze skin. Last Thursday I had one on my team and one on the enemy team in the same lobby. Skin’s popular for a reason.
Where it falls short is the audio department. No voice filter, no new SFX beyond ability particles. For comparison something like Pirate Ryze has that novelty factor with the theme, and Zombie Ryze leans harder into the weird. Blood Moon plays it straight. Clean execution, safe choice, no risks taken. Sometimes thats exactly what you want though. S-tier Ryze cosmetic if you’re into the aesthetic, skip it if you need new voice lines to justify 1350 RP. For Ryze mains specifically this one earns its spot in rotation easy.
