Worlds 2012 Riven

First time I saw this skin load into a game was season 3 I think, maybe late season 2. My toplaner locked in Riven and the loading screen splash just looked different from anything else at the time. Clean gold and blue tones, the Summoner’s Cup worked into her blade. Felt like something you earned, not something you just bought. Turns out you kinda did have to earn the timing on it.

The VFX and what actually changes

For a 975 RP Standard tier skin, Worlds 2012 Riven punches above its weight class. The sword gets a full redesign shaped around the Summoner’s Cup trophy, and the broken blade fragments carry that same championship gold. Her Q combo has tweaked particles with gold energy trails that read well in lane. Not massive changes but noticeable enough that your opponent knows you’re running something special.

The recall animation is where it gets interesting. Riven reassembles the blade with this championship flair that wasnt in many skins back in 2012. For context, custom recalls were still pretty rare at that price point. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, but honestly Cristina Valenzuela’s original Riven voice fits the skin fine. Could be wrong here but I think the auto attack animations feel slightly snappier with this model, even though Riot says hitboxes dont change between skins.

Been running this in Diamond when I can get my hands on it and the W stun flash is visually cleaner than base. The gold burst on Ki Burst reads better against darker Rift terrain. Her ult reforge looks solid too. Wind Slash keeps the championship color scheme which ties the whole kit together.

World Championship legacy and release context

Released October 13, 2012 to celebrate the Season 2 World Championship. Kienan ‘Knockwurst’ Lafferty nailed the splash. The World Championship skinline was still brand new back then and Riven was one of the first champions to get the treatment. Real talk though, this skin carries weight because of what it represents. Season 2 Worlds in LA, TPA’s upset over Azubu Frost. If you were playing League back then you remember.

Legacy vault skin so you cant just grab it whenever you want. Sits in the vault and comes out during Worlds events sometimes, or you need to roll it from chests. I’ve seen maybe 4 of these in my games all season. Every time someone loads in with it there’s at least one person in chat going “wait is that the OG Worlds Riven” (random aside: I keep this splash saved on my desktop because the composition is just that good).

975 RP is the listed price but good luck finding it in the shop outside of specific windows. The skin got a reignited version later which muddied the waters a bit. Not gonna lie, the original still hits harder for me. Something about the slightly dated model gives it character.

Should you chase this skin?

Verdict time. If you main Riven and care about rare skins this is a must-have. 975 RP feels fair for what you get, especially considering the VFX updates and recall. The World Championship line has gotten bigger over the years but the 2012 originals carry a different energy. Less polished, more authentic.

Played maybe 30 games with this last Tuesday night into Wednesday morning and the skin just feels right for splitpush Riven. Something about the gold particles when you’re fast combo-ing a tower makes it satisfying. Skip it if you already have Spirit Blossom or Valiant Sword and dont care about rarity. But for collectors and Riven one-tricks who want something most players will never see in their games? Top pick for Riven mains. The scarcity alone makes it worth chasing through Hextech crafting.
