Quick cast in League of Legends fires an ability the moment you press its key, aimed at your cursor, with no extra click to confirm. What is quick cast in League of Legends?

Should you use quick cast for every ability?
Not always. Quick cast is best when speed matters more than seeing the shape, and worse when a precise placement decides the outcome.
Abilities that usually feel better on quick cast, from our own games and from watching high-elo players:
- Short dashes and blinks, where reaction time is everything.
- Targeted abilities on a champion you’re already hovering.
- Self-buffs and shields, which don’t need aiming at all.
- Short skillshots you throw many times per fight.
And the cases where an indicator often earns its place:
- Very long-range skillshots, where a small angle error means a big miss at the end.
- Large area abilities and ultimates whose exact placement decides a teamfight.
- Walls, terrain-creating abilities and anything you can’t undo.
Thing is, there’s no single right answer. Try quick cast for everything in Practice Tool, then switch back only the keys you keep misusing. That’s how most players end up with a mixed setup that fits their champion.
How do you get used to quick cast in LoL?
By changing where your cursor lives. With normal cast, the cursor can be anywhere because you click to aim afterwards. With quick cast, the cursor has to be on your target before you press the key, so good players keep it near the enemy they’re fighting, not on their own champion.
A short routine helps:
- Open Practice Tool and spawn target dummies.
- Throw each skillshot at a moving dummy until you stop missing at mid range.
- Practise your main combo slowly, then at full speed.
- Play a few normal games or ARAMs before ranked, since misfires there cost nothing.

Is quick cast in LoL the same as smart cast?
Yes. Older guides, videos and forum threads call it “smart cast”, and some players still do. It’s the same setting under its current name, and “smart cast with indicator” is today’s quick cast with indicator. If a guide from years ago tells you to “turn on smart cast”, look for Quick Cast in the Hotkeys menu instead.
What are the most common quick cast mistakes?
Three come up again and again, and all of them are fixable in a session or two.
- Leaving the cursor on your own champion. With quick cast, that sends skillshots in random directions; keep the cursor ahead of you, near the enemy.
- Switching everything at once right before ranked. Change the setting, then play a few normals or ARAMs first.
- Forgetting the item and summoner keys. Flash and item actives keep their old mode until you change them.
Real talk: the cursor habit is 90% of it. Once your hand keeps the mouse on the fight instead of on yourself, quick cast stops feeling random.
What is self-cast, and how does it work with quick cast?
Self-cast lets you use a targeted ability or item on yourself without clicking your own champion. By default, holding Alt while pressing the ability key casts it on yourself, and you can change the modifier in the Hotkeys menu. It’s mostly useful for supports and champions with shields or heals they sometimes want on themselves.
With quick cast on, self-cast is what keeps a support from accidentally shielding a teammate behind the cursor when they meant to shield their own champion. For enchanter supports, it’s worth setting up properly; for a top laner with no ally-targeted spells, it barely matters.
Does quick cast in LoL work for items and summoner spells?
Yes. Summoner spells like Flash follow the same three modes, and so do item actives, which are listed in their own section of the Hotkeys menu. Flash on quick cast is the common choice: you want it instantly, toward your cursor, with no extra click.
Item actives are easy to forget. If you play champions who buy items with actives, check those keys after turning on Quick Cast All, because a mismatched setting is a classic way to waste an active in a fight (and to blame the item instead of the setting).
Is quick cast better for every role?
Most roles benefit, in different ways. Mages and marksmen use it to land skillshots faster. Assassins and fighters use it for combos where several abilities go off in a fraction of a second.
