First time I saw Rogue Admiral Garen load in, I thought someone was trolling with a custom skin. Garen in a pirate hat just hits different. Not in the way you’d expect from Demacia’s poster boy. The whole vibe is wrong in the best way possible, like seeing your strict history teacher at a beach bar. Been running this skin in Diamond since around season 8 I think, and it still gets comments in champ select.
What Rogue Admiral Garen actually changes
Real talk though, this is a Standard tier skin at 750 RP, so temper your expectations. No new VFX on the Q or E. No fancy recall animation. Voice lines stay base. What you get is a full model swap and thats about it.
Garen trades the Demacian plate armor for a naval officer’s coat. Dark blue with gold trim. The sword gets a slight redesign too, feels more like a naval cutlass scaled up to ridiculous proportions. Which honestly fits the Bilgewater fantasy. The hat is the star of the show. Big tricorn, feathered, exactly what you’d picture on some rogue admiral sailing the Serpent Isles.
Not gonna lie, watching Garen spin to win in full pirate getup during a teamfight never gets old. Something about the E animation with that coat flowing. Simple change – huge impact on the silhouette. The splash captures it well too, Garen standing on a ship deck looking like he’s about to order a broadside on the enemy backline.
No new particles on his ult either, so Demacian Justice still drops the same giant sword. Could be wrong here but I think the base Garen colors on the ult actually clash a bit with the pirate aesthetic. Minor gripe. You stop noticing after a few games.
The Bilgewater event and how this skin fits
Rogue Admiral Garen dropped July 22, 2015. Right in the middle of the Bilgewater: Burning Tides event. That was season 5, one of Riot’s better lore events honestly. Gangplank died (temporarily), the whole map got a Bilgewater makeover. Good times.
Sixmorevodka Studio handled the splash art. They nailed the nautical mood. Dark skies, ship rigging in the background, Garen looking like he’s three rum bottles deep but still ready to dive the enemy carry. The Bilgewater: Burning Tides skinline gave us some solid entries and Garen’s fits the theme naturally. A Demacian soldier gone rogue on the high seas. Makes more sense than half the crossover skins Riot puts out these days.
(Random sidebar: I used this splash as my Discord avatar for like two months back in 2019 and nobody recognized it was Garen until I told them.)
No chromas available for this one. Zero. Which tracks for a 750 RP skin from 2015. Riot wasnt really doing chromas back then. Shop has it permanently, so no vault anxiety.
Should you pick up Rogue Admiral Garen?
Verdict time. For 750 RP this is solid. Not spectacular, not a waste. You know what surprised me? How often I default back to this over God-King Garen in my ranked games. Last Tuesday around 2 AM I was grinding and kept locking in Rogue Admiral just because it felt lighter somehow. Less pressure than the Legendary skin. Weird logic but Garen mains might understand.
If you main Garen and want every skin in the collection, this is an easy pickup. 750 RP feels fair for what you get. The model work is clean, the fantasy is fun, and the Bilgewater: Burning Tides connection gives it some lore weight. Skip it if you only want one Garen skin though. God-King or Mecha Kingdoms offer way more for the price jump. But as a secondary skin in your rotation for when you want to splitpush top lane looking like a pirate? Hard to complain. Been in my skin rotation for years and I dont see it leaving anytime soon.
