Nightbringer Aphelios

First time I saw Nightbringer Aphelios load into my game I had to double-take. December 11, 2019, Aphelios had been out for like two weeks and Riot already dropped a skin for him. Bold move. The dark celestial aesthetic hit different compared to his base model, and honestly after maybe 40 games with it that first month I wasnt going back to default.

Visual changes and what actually stands out

The whole Nightbringer and Dawnbringer line leans into this cosmic chaos vs order theme, and Aphelios fits the dark side perfectly. His base kit already has that brooding moon weapon carrier vibe, so putting him in the Nightbringer set just amplifies it. The model gets this deep crimson and black color scheme with glowing accents across each weapon form.

New VFX across all five weapons. Severum’s Q heal feels visually cleaner, the particles have this dark energy swirl that reads well in teamfights. Gravitum’s root proc shows up with a distinct crimson snap. Not gonna lie, Infernum’s R with the Nightbringer particles is probably the highlight. The ult fan-out has these dark fire trails that look incredible when you catch 3+ in the backline during a late-game teamfight.

Crescendum turrets get the dark treatment too. Smaller detail but when you’re kiting in bot lane and dropping turrets, they blend into the Nightbringer aesthetic cleanly. Calibrum marks are easy to track, which matters when you’re trying to snipe from fog. (Random aside: my duo partner refuses to play with me when I use this skin because the Infernum ult particles “give him a headache.” His words not mine.)

New recall animation too. Aphelios does this whole dark energy channeling thing. Clean. Voice lines stay base though, no new VO. Standard for an Epic tier skin at 1350 RP.

The Nightbringer line and release context

Jennifer Wuestling nailed the splash. The composition has Aphelios surrounded by that dark cosmic energy, weapons floating around him. Check her portfolio if you havent, the detail work on the armor plating alone is worth it.

Released December 11, 2019. Season 9 was wrapping up. Aphelios had just launched and the community was still figuring out his kit. Riot pushing a skin this early felt rushed to some people but the execution was solid. Been maining Aphelios with this skin on and off since season 10 and the VFX have aged well.

7 chromas available. Obsidian is my go-to, the all-dark look makes the ability particles pop harder against the model. Pariah has this red and black edge-lord energy that works surprisingly well. Pearl flips the whole color story to white and teal which kinda defeats the Nightbringer purpose but some people dig the contrast. Not sure if it’s just me but the Sapphire chroma reads almost like a Dawnbringer variant, the deep blue shifts the whole mood.

Who should pick this up

Kinda feels like this was Riot testing how fast they could monetize a new champ. Two weeks post-release. But the skin earned its spot. For 1350 RP you get meaningful VFX changes across all five weapon forms, a solid recall, and seven chromas if you want variety. Still in the shop, permanent availability.

The Nightbringer and Dawnbringer skinline has some bangers across the roster. Lee Sin, Yasuo, Kayn all got strong entries. Aphelios holds his own in the set. Could be wrong here but I think this is still top two or three Aphelios skins even after Spirit Blossom and Heartsteel dropped. The dark particle work on Infernum and Crescendum specifically just reads better in my Diamond games than the newer options.

Where it falls short: no voice filter, no new voice lines. At Epic tier thats expected but when you compare to what Legendary skins offer for Aphelios mains who want the full package, you notice the gap. Played this in a ranked session last Friday around midnight and the Q cycling still felt smooth visually. Each weapon swap has enough particle distinction that you’re not losing clarity in chaotic teamfights.

Real talk though. If you one-trick Aphelios or even just have him in your ADC rotation, Nightbringer is worth the 1350 RP. The dark aesthetic suits the champion fantasy better than most of his catalog. Obsidian chroma pushes it further. Skip the Pearl unless you specifically want the light contrast thing. For mains climbing through ranked this season, this skin just works. The VFX clarity on Gravitum roots and Calibrum marks specifically gives you that tiny visual edge when you’re tracking procs in lane. S-tier Aphelios cosmetic, been saying it since 2019.
