Hextech Malzahar

First time I saw Hextech Malzahar load in was during a ranked game back in late 2018. My support pinged the enemy mid laner’s skin like three times. Couldnt blame him honestly, the loading screen art alone hits different from every other Malzahar skin in the collection. The crystalline blue and gold just pops against the usual void purple aesthetic, and I remember thinking this looked way too clean for a champion people mostly associate with pressing R and walking away.

So the big draw here is VFX. Full stop. Every ability gets the Hextech crystal rework and it transforms how Malzahar feels in lane. His Q, Call of the Void, opens up with these sharp geometric shards instead of the normal void energy. Looks like someone cracked open a geode in the middle of the Rift. The silence zone reads cleaner too, which I think actually helps with gameplay clarity in teamfights.

Malefic Visions on E gets this pulsing blue-gold particle trail when it bounces between minions. Been running this skin in Diamond for a few seasons now and the E bounce is visually satisfying in a way that base Malzahar just isnt. You can track the spread through a wave more easily. Not sure if it’s just me but the cs pattern feels smoother when you can see exactly where your space aids is jumping next.

W voidlings get the full crystal makeover. Little hextech critters skittering around. They look fragile and elegant instead of the creepy void bugs, which is a weird vibe shift for Malzahar but it works. His ult is where the skin really earns its Mythic status though. Nether Grasp locks the target in this crystalline prison effect, beams of hextech energy pouring down. Played maybe 150 games with this skin and ulting a fed ADC in a late-game teamfight never gets old visually.

The recall animation is custom too. Malzahar channels hextech energy, crystals forming around him before he warps back. Clean and thematic. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, which is a minor letdown for a Mythic skin but I get it. The visual package carries the weight here.

Hextech line context and the October 2018 drop

Hextech Malzahar released October 18, 2018. Right in the middle of season 8 if I remember right. Xu ‘Crow God’ Cheng nailed the splash, capturing that blue-gold energy radiating off Malzahar’s hands with the void creatures reimagined as crystal constructs. The composition is tight.

The Hextech skinline is one of Riot’s prestige crafting lines. Think Hextech Annie, Hextech Kassadin, Hextech Swain. All share that blue crystal and brass gear aesthetic. Malzahar fits the line surprisingly well considering he’s a void mage. The translation from cosmic horror to arcane machinery shouldnt work but it does. Kinda feels like Riot found the one angle where Malzahar looks sophisticated instead of threatening.

This is a Mythic tier skin with a special crafting price. You’re not buying this off the shop shelf for RP. Back when it dropped you needed 10 gemstones, now its Mythic Essence through the Hextech crafting system. Available through that path. (Random aside: I had been hoarding gemstones since season 7 specifically for a Hextech skin and this was the one that broke my willpower.) The exclusivity factor means you rarely see this in your games. Maybe spotted 4 or 5 other Hextech Malzahar players across all of last season in Diamond.

Worth the Mythic Essence for Malzahar mains?

Real verdict: if you main Malzahar and you have the Mythic Essence sitting around, this is a strong pickup. The VFX overhaul on every ability is substantial for a champion whose base particles look dated. No new voice lines is the one gap, but Malzahar’s base VO is decent enough that it doesnt hurt the experience.

Could be wrong here but I think this is the second best Malzahar skin after Battle Boss for pure visual impact. Battle Boss has the arcade gimmick going for it, Hextech has the elegance. Different vibes entirely. For ranked specifically I lean Hextech because the particles read cleaner against Summoner’s Rift terrain. Last Tuesday I was spamming Malzahar in a Diamond 2 lobby and the enemy Zed literally typed “nice skin” before lane started. That never happens with Snow Day.

The Hextech line carries prestige just from rarity alone. You lock in Malzahar with this skin and people know you either got lucky with drops or you committed resources to it. For one-tricks that matters. Three things stood out across my time with this skin: ult VFX, recall animation, and the way E bounces look on crystal voidlings. Skip it if you only play Malzahar occasionally, but for mains this is S-tier Malzahar cosmetic. Mythic Essence well spent if you put in the games to justify it.
