First game I loaded into with Heartache Vi, my support typed “that splash is so sad” in champ select. Fair point. The whole skin leans into this tragic romantic vibe that you dont usually associate with someone who punches people for a living. Been running this in Diamond since it dropped and honestly the aesthetic grew on me fast. Vi already has aggressive energy baked into her kit, so seeing her in something emotionally charged hits different.
What the skin actually changes on Vi
The model rework is solid for an Epic. Vi’s gauntlets get reshaped into these dark, thorned fist weapons with rose petal accents woven into the metal. Her outfit swaps the usual Piltover enforcer look for something between a gothic ballgown and light armor. Muted purples and blacks dominate the palette. Clean silhouette in lane.
VFX is where Heartache Vi earns the 1350 RP. Her Q charge-up trails dark petals behind her as she winds up, and the impact scatters them on hit. Feels heavier somehow. W procs leave a brief thorn mark on the target. Not sure if it’s just me but the E shockwave reads more clearly than base Vi, the dark particles contrast well against the Rift’s green tones. R is the highlight though – Vi’s ult sends her crashing into a target with a burst of shattered roses. Looked great last Thursday when I dove their Jinx under tier two and the petals exploded everywhere.
Recall animation is new. Vi sits down, removes one gauntlet, holds a wilted rose. Kinda feels like they wanted to tell a whole story in eight seconds. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, but the recall sells the heartache theme on its own. (Random aside: I screenshot the recall pose for a friend who draws fanart and she went crazy over it.)
No new voice filter either. Standard voice, no new lines. For 1350 that’s expected but given how much personality Vi has in her base VO, it still works. The “punch first” energy clashes with the melancholy visuals in a way that’s weirdly charming.
The Heartthrobs and Heartaches line and release context
Heartache Vi dropped February 10, 2023. Valentine’s Day event skin, paired with Heartthrob Caitlyn on the other side of the thematic coin. The Heartthrobs and Heartaches skinline splits champions into the lover and the heartbroken. Vi got the heartache role. Makes sense if you follow the lore implications between these two.
Francis Tneh and West Studio handled the artwork. They nailed the splash – Vi’s expression carries genuine weight, not the usual confident smirk. The composition puts her gauntlets in the foreground but the focus pulls to her face. Strong piece.
The Heartthrobs and Heartaches line is one of Riot’s better Valentine’s concepts. Instead of just slapping hearts on everything they actually built a narrative split. Caitlyn gets the warm golds and pinks, Vi gets cold purples and thorns. Been maining Vi with this skin since season 13 started and the thematic depth is what keeps me coming back over Project or Demon Vi.
8 chromas total. Obsidian turns the whole thing darker, almost funeral-tier, which I think works best for the theme. Aquamarine swaps to a cooler blue-teal palette that reads more “frozen heart” than “broken heart.” Rose Quartz leans pink and honestly undercuts the melancholy a bit. Could be wrong here but I think the base purple is still the strongest read for what the skin is trying to do.
Is Heartache Vi worth 1350 RP?
Real verdict: this is a top three Vi skin. Maybe top two depending on how you feel about Project Vi’s model. The VFX package alone justifies the price. Every Q into a teamfight looks dramatic. Ult is cinematic. The recall animation adds personality that most Epic skins skip entirely.
1350 RP feels fair for what you get. If you play Vi in jungle or occasionally flex her top, this skin makes every gank feel like a cutscene. Played maybe 200 games with it across two seasons and the novelty hasnt worn off. The dark petal particles on Q and R still catch my eye mid-fight, especially in dragon pit where the lighting makes them pop.
Skip it if you’re not into the romantic gothic aesthetic. Grab it in the shop if you main Vi or even just have her in your jungle rotation. Real talk though – pair this with Heartthrob Caitlyn on your duo partner and the loading screen alone is worth the purchase. S-tier Vi cosmetic and I’m not exaggerating. Season 13 I think or maybe early 14, played a stretch of 23 games in a row one weekend with this skin and won like 16 of them. Coincidence probably. But the skin just feels right on her.
