First time I saw this skin load in during a ranked game last September, I thought it was a Legendary. Not even joking. The silhouette alone on the loading screen had me double-checking what my toplaner locked in. Crime City Nightmare Akali hits a vibe that most Epic skins dont even attempt, and it pulls it off with zero new voice lines. That says something about how hard the visual direction carries here.
What the skin actually changes on Akali
The model redesign leans full eldritch noir. Akali’s got this Lovecraftian suit-and-hat look going on, tentacles wrapped around her arms, the whole outfit reading like she just walked out of a 1920s speakeasy that happens to exist in the Void. West Studio nailed the splash. The color palette is deep greens and purples with those signature Crime City Nightmare glowing accents.
New VFX across the board. Her Q throws out these dark smoky slashes that feel heavier than base. W shroud has this creepy mist effect with tendrils curling at the edges, and honestly playing inside it feels different even though the hitbox is identical. Could be wrong here but I swear the E mark looks more visible on this skin than default, which actually matters when you’re trying to proc the second dash in a chaotic teamfight around dragon pit.
R is where it gets good. Both dashes leave these ghostly green trails, and the execute on R2 has a satisfying dark burst that reads clean even in late-game 5v5s. Been running this in Diamond for a while now and the VFX clarity is genuinely above average for a 1350 RP skin. No new VO though. Voice stays default, which is fine because Krizia Bajos already did great work on base Akali.
The recall animation is new. Akali does this shadowy transformation sequence where the eldritch energy takes over for a second. Quick and clean. Not the flashiest recall in the game but it fits the theme perfectly.
Crime City Nightmare as a skinline and release context
Crime City Nightmare dropped August 26, 2021. Season 11 was wild for skin releases and this batch was one of the better ones. The Crime City Nightmare line reimagines the old Crime City skins with a cosmic horror twist. Think noir detective aesthetic meets tentacle monsters. Akali fits naturally into it because her assassin kit already has that shadowy, lurking-in-the-dark energy.
The skinline also got Darius, Zyra, and others. Kinda feels like Riot wanted to test how far they could push the horror angle on a popular champion pool. Akali’s version landed the best out of the set in my opinion. (Random aside: the splash art has been my Discord avatar since release and nobody has guessed its Akali without me telling them.)
9 chromas total for this one. Obsidian goes full dark mode and honestly looks cleaner than the base version for most situations. Tanzanite pushes the purple hard which pairs well with the eldritch theme. Underground is the exclusive one with that deep crimson-to-black gradient, pretty rare to see in games. The rest are solid but those three stand out. Pearl exists if you want the clean look but it loses some of the horror vibe.
Is Crime City Nightmare Akali worth 1350 RP?
Real verdict: this is a top-tier Epic skin for Akali. Played maybe 200 games with it across seasons 11 through 13 and I keep coming back. The VFX are distinct without being distracting, the model is one of Akali’s most unique, and the thematic direction is just different from everything else in her catalog.
1350 RP feels fair for what you get. Not gonna lie, if you’re an Akali one-trick you probably already own this. If you dont, and you’re tired of cycling between K/DA and PROJECT, this is the one to grab. Still in the shop, permanent availability. Last Tuesday I had a game where three people in post-game lobby asked what skin I was using. That never happens with Epic skins. Skip it only if you genuinely hate the horror aesthetic, but for Akali mains specifically this is S-tier. The Obsidian chroma on top makes it even better. Hard to argue against 1350 for the full package here.
