Broken Covenant Riven

First game I loaded this skin into was a late-night Diamond ranked session, maybe 1 AM on a Wednesday. Locked in Riven expecting the usual blade-swinging fantasy and got something completely different. Broken Covenant Riven hit me with this dark cathedral energy that I wasnt ready for. The whole vibe shifted from “exiled warrior” to “corrupted oath-breaker serving something ancient.” Not gonna lie, I sat in the loading screen staring at the splash for a solid ten seconds before the game even started.

How Broken Covenant changes Riven’s kit

This is a full Legendary. New voice lines, new VFX, new recall, the whole package for 1820 RP. Cristina Valenzuela voiced this version of Riven and the delivery carries weight. There’s a coldness to the lines that fits the Broken Covenant theme perfectly. Base Riven sounds determined. This Riven sounds like she already made the wrong choice and knows it.

Q combo feels different visually. Each slash leaves these dark sigil-like trails that linger just a hair longer than base. In a teamfight that visual noise actually matters because your backline can track where you’re swinging. W stun has this covenant circle burst that pulses outward. Clean effect. Not overdone.

E shield is where things get interesting. The dash leaves a brief afterimage with those dark geometric patterns the whole skinline shares. Feels snappy. Might be overthinking it but the animation cancel windows feel smoother with this skin, probably just placebo from the visual feedback being so crisp. R activation turns the blade into this massive corrupted sigil weapon and the Wind Slash projectile has serious presence. You fire that across dragon pit and everyone sees it coming. Been running this in Diamond for two full splits now and the ult VFX alone justified the purchase for me.

The recall animation sells the fantasy hard. Riven kneels before this dark covenant symbol, blade planted in the ground. Short, clean, no unnecessary flashiness. (Random aside: I’ve used this recall to BM after solo kills more times than I want to admit.)

The Broken Covenant line and release context

Broken Covenant dropped March 9, 2023. Season 13 was still fresh. The skinline pulled from this idea of champions bound to dark pacts, trading their humanity for power. Riven fits that narrative better than most of the roster honestly. Her whole lore is about broken oaths already.

Herbie Wang and Kudos Productions handled the splash. They captured this moment of Riven mid-corruption, the covenant marks spreading across her armor. Dark purples and blacks dominate with these sharp geometric accents cutting through. Portfolio piece material.

Broken Covenant also got Rakan, Xayah, Nocturne, and Miss Fortune if I remember right. Could be wrong here but I think Riven was the standout of the set. The Legendary treatment gave her room to breathe where the Epic skins in the line felt a bit more surface-level. Real talk though, the whole batch looked good. Riot’s art team was cooking during that patch cycle.

6 chromas total. Obsidian is the obvious pick for anyone who wants to lean harder into the dark aesthetic, basically turns everything near-black with subtle highlights. Tanzanite shifts the palette into deep purple territory which reads really well against the Rift. Aquamarine is the wildcard, lighter blue tones that almost contradict the skin’s mood but somehow still work. I rotate between Obsidian and base depending on my mood that particular ranked session.

Where this sits in Riven’s skin catalog

Riven has a stacked lineup. Spirit Blossom is gorgeous. Dawnbringer is the classic Legendary pick. Battle Bunny Prime exists for the meme value crowd. So where does Broken Covenant land?

Top three easy. Maybe top two. The new VO gives it an edge over every Epic in her collection. Dawnbringer Riven was the go-to Legendary for years but its starting to show its age compared to what Riot ships now. Broken Covenant has cleaner particles, tighter animations, and a more cohesive theme. Spirit Blossom Riven is the main competition at the Epic tier and honestly for 470 RP less you get a solid skin there. But the voice lines and recall on Broken Covenant put distance between them.

Had a game last season where my Kayn jungle kept pinging my skin in champ select. Turns out he was running Nightbringer Kayn and we accidentally had this dark corruption duo comp going. Those are the dumb moments that make skins fun in solo queue.

Should you buy Broken Covenant Riven?

Full Legendary price at 1820 RP. Earns it. If you main Riven or even play her as a secondary pick in your top lane pool, this skin delivers on every front. New voice, new effects, strong chromas, cohesive theme. Shop has it permanently so no rush, but I wouldn’t wait for a sale that might never come.

Skip it if you already own Dawnbringer and only play Riven occasionally. Two Legendaries for one champion is a tough sell unless you’re a one-trick. But if Riven is your main? Been daily driving this since it dropped and I keep coming back over every other option in her collection. S-tier Riven cosmetic. The Broken Covenant fantasy just works for her kit in a way that feels intentional rather than slapped on. Worth every point of RP for mains, and thats not something I say about most Legendaries these days.
