Zombie Ryze

First time I saw Zombie Ryze loading in was maybe season 3, some ranked game around midnight where my support decided to go AFK at level 2. The enemy mid locked in Ryze with this skin and I remember thinking the model looked genuinely unsettling for how old it was. Not in a polished horror way. More like Riot had a Halloween deadline and just went for it. Honestly not gonna lie, that raw quality is exactly what makes it stick.

What Zombie Ryze actually looks like in game

The whole deal here is Ryze got turned into a walking corpse. Torn robes, exposed flesh, green-tinted skin that reads undead from across the lane. His scroll looks decayed too, like something you’d pull out of a crypt. Standard tier at 975 RP so dont expect a full visual overhaul, but Riot did include new VFX on this one which is a nice touch for a skin from 2010.

The spell particles carry a sickly green hue. Q feels grimier than base. W root has this rotting energy circle that I think looks better than what you get on some of the newer Ryze skins honestly. E spread keeps the theme going. Voice lines stay base, so you still get Dave B. Mitchell’s classic Ryze VO underneath the zombie look. No new recall either, this predates custom recalls by years.

Playing this in Diamond last season, the green particles actually helped me track my own abilities better against certain map skins. Could be wrong here but I feel like the contrast on Summoner’s Rift is slightly better than base Ryze particles. Especially in river fights around dragon where everything gets visually cluttered.

The Zombies VS Slayers line and release history

Zombie Ryze dropped October 19, 2010. Ancient by League standards. Season 1 era. The Zombies VS Slayers skinline is one of Riot’s Halloween themed batches, and Ryze fits the undead fantasy naturally since his base model already looks half-dead with the runes carved into him.

Viktor Titov and Grafit Studio handled the splash art. They captured this mid-transformation vibe where Ryze looks like hes casting while decomposing. Solid work for the era. The splash holds up better than a lot of 2010 artwork if you compare it to some of the other skins from that year.

This one sits in the Legacy vault. You cant just buy it whenever. Riot rotates it out during Halloween events typically, or you might roll it from Hextech crafting if luck is on your side. (Random aside: I got mine from a reroll back in 2019 and it felt like the game was telling me something about my Ryze winrate.) Been running this as my Ryze skin whenever I pick him into AP comps mid, probably 40 or 50 games total across a few seasons.

Should you grab Zombie Ryze?

Real verdict: 975 RP feels fair for what you get. New VFX on a Standard tier skin from 2010 was generous by Riot’s old pricing model. The zombie aesthetic works. Not the flashiest Ryze skin in the catalog, and if you want something with more modern polish then Dark Crystal or Guardian of the Sands will serve you better. But for champion mains who want that old-school rare factor in the loading screen, this delivers.

The Legacy vault status means most Ryze players in your ranked games wont have it. Seen maybe 2 of these all season in my Diamond games. That rarity alone gives it value if you care about standing out. Skip it if you need new voice lines or a custom recall to justify the RP. Worth 975 if you main Ryze and want something different from the usual rotation. The skin just hits a specific horror vibe that none of his other options touch, and in a late-game teamfight with those green particles flying everywhere, your ult looks properly menacing.
